A Hot Night of Racing at MIS

By John Wells

With temperatures in the mid-80's and five divisions in action it was truly a hot night of racing at Madison International Speedway. Five drivers would go home with the coveted checkered flag when the night ended including Andrew Morrissey in the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models, Scott Broughton in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Tyler Kelley in the Roto Rooter Bandits, Blake Brown in the Legends, and Jesse Bernhagen in the Bandoleros.

Morrissey Tops the Field in Madison Late Models

Andrew Morrissey of DeForest, Wisconsin, topped a field of nineteen Madison Late Models in winning the 50 lap feature. It was Morrissey's first feature win at MIS in 2007. In fact, there have been five different feature winners in five events so far this season.

Dann Barber and Michael Pickens brought the field to the green flag and unlike last week, the green flag would come out and stay out for awhile. Pickens wasted no time and vaulted to the lead with Morrissey, who started fourth, up to second by the end of the first lap. This week's start would prove to be much better than last week's caution-marred race that featured an early race incident on the backstretch that ended the night for several of the drivers.

Pickens built a solid lead which by lap 15 was up to four car lengths with Morrissey, Jason Tyler, Nathan Haseleu, and Bobby Wilberg rounding out the top five.

The first caution of the event came out on lap 18 for a spin. After the restart, Pickens, who led last week's feature as well, continued to maintain his lead. By lap 24 the action out front really heated up with four cars jostling for the lead with Morrissey coming out ahead.

“I knew I had to get by the 4 car, but it wasn't going to be easy,” said Morrissey, who eventually cleared Pickens on the front stretch on lap 25. One lap later Haseleu passed Pickens for second and set his sights on Morrissey. Wilberg also joined the chase when he passed Pickens on lap 29 with Tyler up to fourth and Tom Gille to fifth one lap later.

Two more cautions would occur on laps 30 and 40 with Morrissey answering the call on each of the restarts and denying Haseleu the chance to win back-to-back features. At the line it would be Morrissey topping Haseleu by 0.480 seconds. Following Morrissey and Haseleu at the stripe were Wilberg, Gille, and Zack Riddle.

“It's great to be back in victory lane,” said Morrissey in a post race interview.

Haseleu set fast time with a lap of 18.139 (99.234 mph). Jason Erickson, Riddle, and Morrissey recorded heat wins.

Haseleu is the new point leader in the division with a 399-398 advantage over Wilberg. Rounding out the top five in points are Gille, Morrissey, and Riddle.

Two in a Row for Scott Broughton in Limited Late Models

Scott Broughton followed up a strong performance last week with his second feature win in a row in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models as he bested a thirteen car field in the 30 lap feature.

“The car is running great. This is super,” said Broughton in a post race interview where his crew joined him.

It seemed like this race would never get going as the caution flag came out four times in the first five laps for spins and debris on the track. Once things sorted out it would Chad Stevens, who was making his second appearance in the 2007 season, who would jump out to the lead followed by John Baumeister.

Stevens looked strong early on but Baumeister was stronger as he pulled alongside Stevens on lap nine and made the inside pass for the lead one lap later. But Baumeister was not alone as Broughton was right there with him getting by Stevens for second.

Starting from the outside of the fourth row, Broughton was not about to let Baumeister check away from the field. On lap 13 Broughton looked to the inside of Baumeister coming out of turn 3 when contact was made sending both cars spinning. As a result, Baumeister would go to the back with Broughton taking over the top spot.

With Broughton out front, Bobby Wilberg would move up to second followed by Michael Bilderback, Chad Stevens, and Mark Miller.

The restart was good for Broughton who built a two car length advantage over Wilberg only to have the caution flag come out two laps later.

Once again Broughton started well after the restart and it was all money in the bank for the Stoughton driver who cruised to victory with a 2.096 advantage over Wilberg. Rounding out the top five were Bilderback, Brady Liddle, and John Baumeister. Following post race inspection Bilderback would be disqualified.

Bilderback set fast time with a lap of 19.126 (94.113 mph). Taking home wins in the heat races were Mark English and Broughton.

Broughton is building his point lead in the division with a 402-340 advantage over Wilberg followed by Baumeister, Ryan Goldade, and Miller.

Four in a Row for Tyler Kelley

To say Tyler Kelley is on a roll in the Roto Rooter Bandits would be an understatement as he earned his fourth straight feature win in the nine car, twenty lap feature.

Alex Lee and Chester Ace, who returned after a roll over accident one week ago, led the field to the green flag with Lee showing the way early. Behind Lee would be Alex Jones and Bobby Selsing Jr.

On lap three it became three wide for the lead with Selsing Jr. coming out the winner followed by Jones, Steve Dickson, and Kelley. Selsing Jr. quickly built a big lead, which had increased to ten car lengths by lap 6. At this point it appeared that the only thing that could slow down the leader would be a caution flag. And that's exactly what happened.

On lap 12 Alex Jones lost a tire, which brought out the caution and negated the large lead Selsing Jr. had amassed. This would move Kelley up to second and Dickson to third.

Selsing Jr. continued to lead after the restart but Kelley quickly moved to the outside to battle for the lead. On lap 15 Kelley was able to power by Selsing Jr. for the lead with a backstretch pass and would never look back as he sprinted to the win. Selsing Jr. and Dickson were in a spirited battle for second place as the two battled side by side with Dickson coming out ahead. Following Kelley, Dickson, and Selsing Jr. would be Lee and Ace.

“It was a great one,” said Kelley from victory lane who received a thumbs up from fellow competitor Selsing Jr.

Heat wins went to Lee and Dickson.

Kelley leads the way in points with a 455-444 advantage over Dickson followed by Jones, Ace, and Selsing Jr.

Blake Brown Wins Legends Feature

Following his heat win earlier in the night, Blake Brown was noticing the trophy for the Legends feature and you could see in his eyes that nothing was going to stop him from taking home the trophyÉand nothing would as Brown won the 15 lap feature for the Legends.

Bethany Wyttenbach and Brown would start in the first row with Wyttenbach holding a slight advantage after the first lap. On lap 2 Brown would power by Wyttenbach on the outside to take the lead with Kyle LaPier getting by Wyttenbach for second on lap 3.

Brown built up an eight car length advantage over the field by lap four. LaPier started to close the gap when the caution flag came out on lap 11 for a spin.

After the restart Brown continued to lead with LaPier right there with him and ready to challenge him for the top spot. Unfortunately for LaPier he would spin on lap 13 coming into to turn two and his hopes for the win extinguished.

From there it was all Blake Brown as he raced to the win and collected the trophy. “This is coolÉthe car was great tonight,” said Brown in a post race interview. “We are really looking forward to coming back for the First Supply All Star Challenge night,” added Brown in reference to the Legends and Bandoleros who will a support division as part of the All Star Challenge on Tuesday, June 26th.

Jesse Bernhagen Treats Fans to Bandolero Victory

It's not everyday that a driver has a fan bus come to see him race, but for Markesan, Wisconsin, driver Jesse Bernhagen that's exactly what happened tonight. A bus load of Bernhagen fans made the trip from Markesan and the fourteen year old driver made it worth their time as he swept the feature and heat race in the Bandoleros.

Starting on the outside of the front row alongside Cody Daul, Bernhagen pulled up even with Daul on the first lap and one lap later made the pass for the lead on the front stretch and never looked back as he sprinted to the win in the fifteen lap feature for these young stars of racing.

Bernhagen thanked his fans from victory lane. “I want to thank everyone for coming down and especially thank my sponsors.”

Next week at Madison International Speedway will be the “Fireworks Extravaganza” sponsored by Gordie Boucher.
