Robbie Pyle Wins Mad Summer Meltdown 100 at MIS By ASA Late Model Series (Matt Prieur) Oregon, Wisconsin (07/07/2007): The Third Race of the 2007 Season in the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts is now in the record books! The fast 0.500 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval of the Madison (WI) International Speedway, located South of Wisconsin's Capital City of Madison, in Oregon, Wisconsin were the hosts for the Mad Summer Meltdown 100. In the Mad Summer Meltdown 100, Columbus, Ohio veteran, Robbie Pyle took the lead from ASALMS Northern Division Points Leader and pole sitter, Trent Snyder on Lap 45 and from there, Pyle withstood several hard charges from ASALMS Challenge Division Points Leader, Travis Dassow to win his first ASALMS Northern Division Feature and Second overall ASALMS triumph of the 2007 season. Earlier in the season, Pyle steered his Image F-X/Andrews Pallet Company/Howe Racing Enterprises/Ford Fusion into victory lane back on June 16, 2007 at the Berlin (MI) Raceway in ASALMS Challenge Division competition after winning the 1st annual Tradition 200. The Mad Summer Meltdown was the fastest 100 lap event in ASALMS history as the century grind only took 40 Minutes and 19.704 Seconds as only a single caution was flown during the event for a harmless spin by a lapped car! Dassow settled for second as Snyder, who paced the field for the first 45 laps came home in third to extend his points lead in the ASALMS Northern Division heading to the Rockford (IL) Speedway on Saturday July 28, 2007. Eddie Hoffman came from 14th to finish fourth while ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year Points Leader, Dave Gentile Jr., extended his lead in the Freshman title chase as well with a solid Fifth place showing. Erie, Colorado visitor, Chris Eggleston made the most of his first ever ASALMS appearance by finishing in Sixth while Madison Regular Jason Tyler grabbed a career high Seventh. 15-year-old Alex Kennedy came home with a career high Eighth as Charlie Menard from 19th, and Jason Taghikhani completed the Top 10. Gehrke and Goodwin Show the Way for the Super Cups Classic Win for Schmidt in Vintage Cars By John Wells Saturday, July 7, 2007 (Oregon, WI) The Central States Region Super Cups made their second appearance of the 2007 season at Madison International Speedway as part of the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Mad Summer Meltdown. After an exciting night of racing it would be Erik Gehrke and Garrett Goodwin who would take home the checkered flags in the their respective divisions. The adult division of the Super Cups took to Wisconsin's Most Challenging Quarter Mile with fourteen cars set to do battle. Erle Hoth and Steve Dorko made up the front row when the field took the green flag. Hoth and Dorko battled it out side by side for the lead with Hoth getting the early advantage. Dorko would take over the point on lap 6 with the speedy Jeff Myers, who set a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 15.189. and Erik Gehrke in hot pursuit. On lap 7 Gehrke powered by Dorko for the lead with Myers hot on his tail. By lap 13 Myers was alongside Gehrke fighting it out for the lead. Gehrke continued to maintain his advantage but not without a fight from Myers. On lap 19 Myers got off the pace coming down the backstretch which allowed Gehrke to increase his lead. Gehrke would be just too strong tonight as he sprinted his way to victory followed by Hoth, Dorko, Myers, and Jake Jump. For Gehrke it meant a clean sweep of the Madison events in 2007 as he also won the feature back on May 6th. Heat wins were recorded by David Cerer and Gehrke. Not to be outdone by the adults, the Central States Region Super Cups Junior Divison also put on a great show for the fans in their twenty lap feature. Jacob Zellmer and Morgan Schissel brought the field of ten cars to the green flag with Zellmer getting out to the early advantage. Zellmer and Schissel would battle it out for the lead with Schissel gaining supremacy on lap 5. However, Garrett Goodwin, who started inside of row three, was quickly moving his way up to the front. On lap 6 he passed Zellmer for second and focused his attention on Schissel. On lap 9 Goodwin took over the lead only to surrender it back to Schissel on the same lap. The caution flag came out on lap 12 for a spin, but Schissel was able to maintain his lead following the restart. On lap 13 Goodwin made the move of the race as he overtook Schissel on the inside and led the field the rest of the way to the checkered flag. Kyle Brinkmann overtook Schissel on the final lap for second place. Rounding out the top five were Toby Stewart and Camden Murphy. For the twelve year old Goodwin, who hails from Three Oaks, Michigan, the trip to MIS was well worth it. Coming home with victories in the heat races were Schissel and Stewart. The Grand National Vintage Stock Cars were also at MIS with eight classic cars battling it out on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. Fans quickly found out that these cars are not just for show. The 1958 Edsel of Matt McGlaughlin of Friendship, Wisconsin, paced the field to the green flag and held down the top spot for the first few laps of the fifteen lap feature. But it was Woodstock, Illinois driver Mark Freund, who earlier won the heat race, who would have the most speed as he sprinted past his fellow competitors to take the lead. While Freund was building a big lead over the field, Jamie Schmidt had worked his way up to second. For Freund the lead would slowly diminish as he approached lapped traffic and was unable to get by a pair of cars. While Freund tried to get around the slower cars, Schmidt was closing the gap. As Freund pondered a way to get around the two cars in front of him, Schmidt decided he would pass all three and was able to successfully do so. From that point on there was no stopping the Arlington Heights, Illinois, driver who powered his way to victory lane followed by Freund. Other drivers in the field included Randy Drefal of East Troy, Wisconsin, Mike McCormick of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, Ron Boutell of Franksville, Wisconsin, Dave Johnson of Union Grove, Wisconsin, and Brennan Lewis of Wonder Lake, Illinois. After a runner-up finish to Bill Prietzel at Wisconsin International Speedway on June 9th, Spoonmore found the rest of the pack in his rear view mirror as the checkered flag waved over Madison International Speedway. Spoonmore emerged after a three lap side by side battle with Danny Powell to take the lead for good on lap 28 and held off the late charges of Jake Finney to take his first Mid-American win of 2007. A pair of top Mid-American veterans paced the field to the green flag. Lyle Nowak used the inside line to lead early as Bobby Gutknecht faded on the outside after the green flag fell. Through the first eight laps, Powell was on the move as he advanced from his sixth starting spot to second. Coming back to lap nine, Powell took the lead away from Nowak using the inside line. At the same time a trio of drivers were on the move to the front. Finney, Spoonmore and fast qualifier James Swan moved into third, fourth and fifth respectively. The group then dragged Nowak into the battle on lap 14. With Nowak holding the inside line, Swan used to outside to shoot past Finney and Spoonmore into third. On lap 16 he took away the second spot from Nowak. It took Swan only four laps to reel in Powell. Earlier in the evening Swan beat Powell by a matter of inches in the eight lap heat race. There would be no repeat of the epic battle as Swan moved past Powell on the inside as the two raced out of turn four on lap 20. It looked as though Swan was headed for the clean sweep as he quickly stretched his lead out to nearly half a straightaway. However, Swan and lady luck have not been on the same page in 2007 and trouble struck the Berge racing machine once again. On lap 25, Swan suffered engine troubles for the third consecutive race. The engine expired and Swan spun in his own fluid, backing hard into the turn three wall. He was unharmed. The restart handed the lead back to Powell with Spoonmore now in second and Finney in third. Spoonmore stole the lead away from Powell on lap 28 and began to check out as Powell and Finney tussled for second. Finney eventually took the spot from Powell but had almost a straightaway to make up on Spoonmore. However, Finney caught a break as a lap 37 caution involving Maxwell Schultz and Dave Obermeyer set up a three lap shootout. After the restart, Finney stayed close to Spoonmore in turns one and two but Spoonmore began to pull away on the backstretch. Spoonmore would win with a healthy advantage over Finney who scored his career best Mid-American finish. Powell finished a Mid-American career best third, Gutknecht fourth and Andrew Kulka finished fifth, also a career best. This one is special, said Spoonmore in victory lane. This car was fast, once it got out in the open we couldn't be beat, he exclaimed. The events at MIS certainly should have a profound event on Mid-American points as Swan finished 20th. Bill Prietzel who was second in points, only one point behind Swan, finished seventh. Gutknecht was only four points out of the lead and Spoonmore only 17. Mid-American point standings will be officially posted on the Mid-American website. The next event for the Mid-American Stock Car Series is next Saturday, July 14th as the series makes its debut at the Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI.
