Miller, Dickson, Cottam, and Sparkman Best at MIS By John Wells It was a night of great family entertainment at Madison International Speedway as four divisions took to the track along with a Desperate Housewives race, coin drop for the kids, and family recliner races. When the night ended it would be Jeremy Miller, Steve Dickson, Charlie Cottam, and George Sparkman taking home the trophies. Miller Powers to Win in Limited Late Models Jeremy Miller of Rockton, Illinois, took advantage of having the night off in the Madison Late Models by brining his limited late model to MIS and winning the 30 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models. Mark English started on the pole for the fifteen car feature and battled side by side with Mark Miller for the lead going back and forth for the first four laps. On lap four Miller took the lead from English. Brady Liddle passed English on lap 6 and started to hunt down Miller for the lead. Meanwhile, Jeremy Miller was right behind Liddle and was up to third. On the tenth lap Liddle pulled down inside of Mark Miller to take the lead with Jeremy Miller up to second one lap later. Waiting for the perfect opportunity, Jeremy Miller found the door open up for him as Liddle gave him room on the inside while coming out of turn two on lap 12. That was all Miller needed as he powered by Liddle for the lead and never looked back. The caution flag would come out on lap 15 for a stalled car and fluid on the track. But on the restart Miller had no problem holding off Liddle and the rest of the field and cruised to victory lane. Probably the best battle on the race track was between the top two in points, Bobby Wilberg and Scott Broughton, with Wilberg able to hold off Broughton to take fourth place behind Mark Miller. The car was great. We're looking forward to the Big Eight race coming up later this month (July 27th), said Miller in a post race interview. This was Miller's first limited late model victory in 2007 to go along with two wins in the Madison Late Models. He also becamethe sixth different driver to win a feature in the division. Broughton set fast time with a lap of 18.976. Heat race wins were recorded by English and Wilberg. For English it was his third straight week picking up a heat win. Liddle was victorious in the Wayne's Custom DIECAST Dash also for the third straight time. Dickson Back in Victory Lane Steve Dickson of Rockton, Illinois, who regained the points lead in the Roto Rooter Bandits last week, returned to victory lane for the first time since opening day as he won the twenty lap feature for the Bandits. It is great to be back in victory lane. This was a fun race, said an elated Dickson from victory lane following his win. Fourteen Roto Rooter Bandits were led to the green flag by Brian Paulson and Cory Skolaski. Paulson, who was making his first Bandit start at MIS, would show the most speed early on with Steve Privett quickly up to second. The race would stay green until lap 2 when Cory Skolaski made heavy contact with the outside wall in turn two. Skolaski was not injured, but the contact tipped over the barrier and required quick action by Seitz Towing to put it back in its original position before racing could resume. Paulson would continue to lead after the restart with Dickson getting by Privett for second. Dickson quickly pulled alongside Paulson for the lead and was able to make the pass on the outside coming out of turn four. On lap 6, Dickson's teammate David Cootes passed Paulson for second with last week's feature winner, Bobby Selsing Jr., up to third. The caution flag would come out on lap 10 for debris on the track, but after the restart Dickson continued to maintain his advantage and patiently worked his way through lapped traffic to increase his lead with Selsing Jr. in second. The one thing Dickson didn't want to see happen did happen when the caution flag came out on lap 17. Very aware that he had a speedy Selsing Jr. right on his tail, Dickson had a great restart and was able to maintain his advantage. On the final lap Selsing Jr. made a valiant effort on the high side but was unable to get by Dickson at the stripe who took the win by less than two feet. Rounding out the top five behind Dickson and Selsing Jr. were Cootes, Chester Ace, and Paulson. Heat race wins were recorded by Selsing Jr. and Alex Jones. Cottam Captures USST Super Truck Win Charlie Cottam captured the 30 lap feature event for the USST Super Trucks by topping a thirteen truck field. Bret Widdis and Tom Roney started in the front row with Widdis jumping out to the early lead. The Northern Michigan University graduate looked strong early on but would not have enough to hold off the veteran John Wood who slid by Widdis on the inside on lap three. Wood, who set fast time earlier in the evening, clearly looked like the truck to be at the time. However, Andy Jirik, who made the long haul from Lonsdale, Minnesota, was going to have something to say about that. While Wood was building his advantage over the field, Charlie Cottam and Andy Jirik were battling it out for second place. Cottam, who had taken over second after passing Widdis on lap 6, was going to be hard-pressed to hold off the very fast Jirik. On lap 13 Jirik was up to second and Wood's lead was slowly decreasing. The excitement was really building when Jirik decided to make his move on Wood while coming down the backstretch on lap 15. Unfortunately the lapped truck of Cole Howland was on the inside and the three wide action wound up sending Wood up the track and into the wall bringing out the caution flag. The incident meant that the leaders would both go to the back with Wood having damage to the rear end of his mount. This meant that Charlie Cottam would inherit the lead followed by Widdis, Gary Cerny, Roney, and Fred Oswald. This was just the spot Cottam wanted to be in as he quickly built a lead over the field with Cerny able to get by Widdis for second and hoping for a caution. On lap 25 the caution flag came out for a spin just ahead of the leaders thus negating Cottam's lead. At this point, Jirik, who had been sent to the back of the pack ten laps earlier, had worked his way up to fifth. But this race belonged to Cottam who was able to hold off Cerny for the win followed by Jirik, Wood, and Roney. For Cottam it meant his 36 career feature win at MIS in a truck. This is tiring, said a very happy, but exhausted, Cottam from victory lane. I haven't raced since Oktoberfest. Heat races went to Jirik and Oswald. Short Trackers Win to Sparkman This is much better. Usually I win the heat race and don't do as well in the feature, said George Sparkman after winning the 20 lap feature for the American Short Trackers / International Four Cylinders. Nine cars came to the green flag led by Randy Nottestad and Derek Bettenhausen. Nottestad would have the most speed early on as he took his Ford Pinto out to the lead. Quickly up to challenge for the lead by lap 2 was Sparkman. He and Nottestad battled it out side by side until lap 6 when Sparkman took over the top position. Sparkman wasted no time in putting some distance between himself and his fellow competitors. Steve Allman was up to second but it appeared that nobody would have anything for Sparkman. However, working his way up to second and closing quickly on Sparkman was Brent Nottestad. Nottestad, in his first appearance at MIS, would not have enough laps to catch Sparkman as the veteran held off the field for his first win at MIS. Following Sparkman and Nottestad at the line were Zack Rodriguez, Aaron Rude, and Steve Allman. Rude took the checkered flag in the heat race. Teresa Verburgt Wins Desperate Housewives Race Teresa Verburgt ran away from the field in the first annual Desperate Housewives race. Driving the Steve Dickson back-up car, Verburgt wasted no time getting out to the lead and never looking back in the seven car field. All of the women in the race were making their MIS debut of which the majority had never been in a racecar before. This is so exciting, said Verburgt in a post race interview. She has been working at MIS all season long hoping to get an opportunity to race, and the economics major at the University of Wisconsin has made racing her own car a goal of hers. The Wendt team of Ron and Alec won the first annual Family Recliner race by besting a twelve recliner field.
