Morrissey and Liddle Top the Field of Winners at MIS By John Wells Friday, July 13, 2007 (Oregon, WI) A picture perfect night for racing greeted fans and drivers at Madison International Speedway on Clear Channel Night with five exciting racing divisions in action. When the checkered flag waved for the final time, five drivers would be going home with feature wins: Andrew Morrissey in the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models, Brady Liddle in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Bobby Selsing Jr. in the Roto Rooter Bandits, Blake Brown in the Legends, and Jesse Bernhagen in the Bandoleros. Justin Brown of WJVL radio in Janesville won the celebrity race. Morrissey Best in Madison Late Models Andrew Morrissey picked up his second Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Model feature win of the 2007 season by topping a seventeen car field in the 50 lap feature. The field of Madison Late Models was led to the green flag by a pair of second generation drivers, Brent Brevak and Jeremy Lepak. Early on it appeared that Lepak would run away from the field if the race stayed green as he had built an eight car length advantage by lap 4. By lap 10 Zack Riddle had worked his way up to second and was slowly cutting into Lepak's advantage. On lap 21 the race's first caution flag came out for a spin and suddenly Lepak's lead was gone. Following the restart Bobby Wilberg passed Riddle to take over the second position before the caution flag came out for a spin in turn two. This meant that Lepak would now have to hold off the hard-charging Wilberg if he wanted to keep his lead. When the green flag waved Wilberg wasted no time as he went to the inside of Lepak going into turn one and took over the top spot and by lap 26 had built a solid lead over the field. Morrissey, who had worked his way up to fourth was up to second on lap 26 with Jeremy Miller right behind him. Patiently chipping away at Wilberg's lead, Morrissey had closed the gap by lap 35 and the DeForest, Wisconsin, driver was right on the leader's tail two laps later. On lap 39 Morrissey saw the door open up and took to the inside of Wilberg coming out of turn two and powered by him for the lead. Despite a series of caution flags late in the race, Morrissey continued to maintain his lead and took home the checkered flag. Following Morrissey at the line were Miller, Wilberg, Riddle, and Jason Tyler. Tom Gille set fast time with a lap of 18.283 (98.452 mph) with heat race victories going to Lepak and Wilberg. Wilberg leads the Madison Late Models point race with a 544-513 advantage over Gille. Rounding out the top five are Miller (485), Morrissey(473), and Tyler(449). Liddle Powers His Way to Victory Brady Liddle of Oregon, Wisconsin, just seems to be getting better each week. With three Wayne's Custom DIECAST Dash wins over the past month and a heat win earlier in the night, Liddle captured his biggest victory of the 2007 season by taking home the checkered flag in the 30 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models. Todd Schmitz and Cliff Rucks brought the thirteen car field to the green flag with Rucks motoring out to the early lead. The first of four early caution flags came out on lap 4 for a spin with Rucks able to maintain his lead following the restart. Following the second caution, Liddle, who had earlier passed Schmitz, was suddenly up to challenge Rucks for the lead. As the two came out of turn two on lap 9, Liddle found room on the inside and made the pass to take the lead. One lap later, fast qualifier Bobby Wilberg was up to second and ready to challenge Liddle. Two more restarts following cautions were good for Liddle as he continued to hold off Wilberg. Point leader Scott Broughton, who had spun earlier in the race, had worked his way up to third on lap 15. Liddle, Wilberg, and Broughton quickly broke away from the pack and an exciting finish was shaping up. While Wilberg and Broughton were battling it out for second, Liddle was able to slightly increase his led. On lap 27 Broughton passed Wilberg and now focused his attention on the leader. Broughton closed the gap quickly and was right on Liddle's tail coming into turn three on the final lap. But unfortunately for Broughton he would come up short as he spun in turn four and could watch as Liddle cruised his way to the checkered flag. Wilberg would finish second followed by Ryan Goldade, Cliff Rucks, and Schmitz. This feels great. The car has been awesome and it's great to get a feature win, said Liddle in a post race interview following a front stretch burnout that created a giant wall of tire smoke. Wilberg set fast time for the division with a lap of 19.066 (94.409 mph). Heat race wins went to Liddle and Wilberg. Despite his twelfth place finish, Broughton continues to sit atop the point standings with a 613-582 lead over Wilberg. Rookie Ryan Goldade in third with 527 followed by John Baumeister (490) and Brady Liddle (480). Selsing Wins Number Two in Roto Rooter Bandits Two weeks ago he won his first feature in 2007, last week he finished second by less than three feet, and this week Bobby Selsing Jr. led wire to wire to pick up his second win of the year in the 20 lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits. Starting on the outside of row one, Selsing Jr. wasted no time in getting out to the lead and quickly established himself as the car to beat. Quickly up to second was Chester Ace followed by Steve Dickson and defending track champion Tyler Kelley. A great battle would take place between Kelley and Dickson with the two trading positions behind Ace. Out front it was relatively smooth flying for the Bat Boy who worked his way around lapped traffic. On lap 17 Selsing Jr. threaded the needle going into turn one as he split the difference between two lapped cars and increased his lead only to see the caution flag come out a lap later. But there would be no denying Selsing Jr. as a good restart allowed him to hold off Ace for the win with Kelley staying in front of Dickson for third. The car has been great for us. This is some good racing. Last week I was so close it's nice to be back in victory lane, commented Selsing Jr. in a post race interview with Batman theme music in the background. Heat races were won by Alex Jones and Rory Padfield. Dickson holds down the top spot in the Roto Rooter Bandits point standings with a fifty point lead over Selsing Jr. (674-624). Ace is third with 601 points followed by Jones with 587 and Kelley with 533. Brown Cruises to Victory in Legends Feature Blake Brown has had quite a summer. Earlier this year he won his first-ever feature at MIS in the Legends, but has also added victories at several other tracks including the Milwaukee Mile. After tonight the fifteen year old hot shoe can claim he has two wins at MIS as he cruised to victory in the 20 lap feature for the Legends. It was a great race early on between Brown and Matt Booker, who both started in the front row, as the two traded the top position over the course of the first three laps. On lap 3 Brown cleared Booker and began building up a solid advantage over the field of eight cars. Brown adeptly worked his way through lapped traffic and would never be challenged unless the caution flag would come out to take away his lead, but it never did and there would be no stopping Brown who cruised his way to the win. Following Brown at the line were Booker, Max McNamara, Alex Arelano, and Joe Scala. Brown also won the heat race. Bernhagen Paces the Bandoleros Jesse Bernhagen celebrated his birthday week by winning his second Bandoleros feature of the 2007 season at MIS in what proved to be the most exciting finish of the night. It was a great race early on between Bernhagen and Aaron Moyer as the two took turns leading with Bernhagen grabbing the lead at the start, Moyer taking it on lap 3, and Bernhagen taking it back one lap later. As the two raced side by side, Vern Fagerberg, who had won a feature at MIS earlier this season, was working his way up to join the mix. Fagerberg could only watch as Bernhagen and Moyer battled it out all the way to the end with Bernhagen taking the win in a very close finish. Moyer would finish second followed by Fagerberg, Caylie Duncanson, Brody Beyer, and Kyle Vergata. Bernhagen also won the heat race earlier in the evening. Justin Brown topped the field of five cars in the Celebrity Race to advance to the Celebrity finals in late August. Representing WJVL of Janseville, Brown took home the trophy by holding off Ken Scott also of WJVL. MIS track announcer Scotty Ernst finished third followed by long-time Janesville radio legend Stan Milam and MIS PR/ Media/ Announcer John Wells.
