Goldade and Brown Win at MIS

By John Wells

Friday, July 20, 2007 (Oregon, WI) The ingredients were all in place for a perfect night of racing at Madison International Speedway. A great crowd, picture perfect weather, and some of the best drivers in the Midwest doing battle all added up to a spectacular evening of action at Wisconsin's Track of Champions who hosted the first-ever appearance by the ASA Midwest Tour.

Rookie Ryan Goldade picked up his second win of the 2007 in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models while fifteen year old Blake Brown won his second feature in a row and third in 2007 in the INEX Legends.

Flying Ryan Goldade Tops Limited Late Model Field

Fourteen Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models took the green flag in their 30 lap feature. Mark Miller and Ryan Goldade brought the field to the green and proceeded to race side by side for the first lap with it being dead even at the stripe. Miller eventually gained enough room to clear Goldade to take the lead on lap 2.

With Bobby Wilberg moving up to third and Goldade breathing down his neck, Miller was going to have everything he could handle to hang on to the lead. On lap five Goldade got down to the inside of Miller as the two came out of turn four and made the pass on the front stretch.

Goldade quickly put some space between himself and the cars of Miller and Wilberg. A great race took place for the second position with Wilberg eventually winning out on lap 13 when he passed Miller on the inside. While this battle was taking place, Goldade was able to increase his lead out front.

Wilberg, who trailed by as many as six car lengths, quickly began to cut into Goldade's lead but it was pretty evident that in order to catch the Stoughton driver he was going to need to see the caution flag come out to close the gap. And that's exactly what happened on lap 26 when a spin in turn four brought out the yellow flag.

“That's the last thing I wanted to see,” said Goldade.

The restart was golden for Goldade as he quickly built up a two car length advantage over Wilberg and was able to hold him off the rest of the way and pick up his second win of the season. Finishing behind Goldade and Wilberg were Miller, Jeff Steenbergen and last week's feature winner Brady Liddle.

Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 18.918 with heat race wins going to Goldade and Liddle.

Two in a Row for Blake Brown

Fifteen year old Blake Brown of Franksville, Wisconsin, won his second INEX Legends feature in a row and third of the season at MIS by topping the fourteen car field in their 20 lap feature.

Alex Arelano and Matt Booker had the honors of bringing the field to the green flag with Arelano grabbing the early advantage. Arelano, who had earlier won a heat race, looked to have a lot of early speed but unfortunately would spin coming out of turn four and bring out the caution flag. For Arelano this meant a trip to the back of the field and Booker the new leader.

Booker was able to hold off Brown for the next few laps, but on lap 5 Brown powered by him for the lead and quickly checked away from the field. Adeptly working his way through lapped traffic, Brown wasted no time indistancing himself from his fellow competitors.

Despite the solid lead, Brown found out that nothing is for certain when it comes to racing. As Brown came across the stripe on lap 16 it was evident that something was wrong with his car.

“We were having ignition problems and knew that it might be a problem before we came out,” said Brown.

With his car slowing, Brown was going to have to do everything he could to hang on for the win. Coming through the field like a rocket, Kyle LaPier appeared to be the one car that would be able to close the gap as he passed Cody and Dave Townsend, Max McNamara, and Booker for second place.

But this night belonged to Brown who was able to hang on and hold off LaPier at the line to pick up the win.

Heat race wins went to Brown and Arelano.

Next Weekend at MIS

It's a doubleheader of racing action at Madison International Speedway next weekend. On Friday night July 27th it will be JP Cullen and Sons Night at MIS with five divisions in action highlighted by the Big 8 Series for the limited late models. This will be the second appearance of the 2007 by the Big 8 cars who saw over 40 competitors come to MIS earlier this year. Also in action will be the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models, Roto Rooter Bandits, American Short Tracker / International Four Cylinders, and the Hobby Stocks.

It's Open Wheel Night presented by Pepsi on Saturday, July 28th with five divisions coming to MIS. Highlighting the racing action will be the high flying USAC Regional Midgets who will take to Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. Drivers from throughout the Midwest are expected to battle it out. Four divisions will be racing on the quarter mile with the Ford Focus Midgets, Kenyon Midgets, Rascal Outlaws, and Formula Indy Racing Association doing battle. These divisions are unlike anything you have seen at MIS in 2007
