Doubleheader Weekend at MIS: It's Must See Racing! By John Wells Racing just got twice as good at Madison International Speedway with an exciting doubleheader of action at Wisconsin's Track of Champions on tap this weekend. “Our fans are going to see ten very different divisions over the course of two nights. Friday will be more of our traditional program with Saturday being the only appearance in the 2007 season for the open wheel cars,” said MIS General Manager Dave Grueneberg. On Friday night July 27th it will be JP Cullen and Sons Night at MIS with action in five exciting divisions. Highlighting the racing program will be the Big 8 Series for limited late models. This will mark the second appearance at MIS by the series in 2007 as Brian Hoppe took home top honors back in May. Over 40 cars were on hand then and a big car count is expected this Friday night. The event will also count for points in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Model division that races weekly at MIS. The Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models return after being off a week along with the Roto Rooter Bandits. Two other divisions will also join the program as they both take to the challenging quarter mile. The American Short Trackers / International Four Cylinders return for their fourth appearance of the 2007 season while the Hobby Stocks make their season debut. The fifth segment of the Wayne's Custom DIECAST Dash Series will also take place. Exciting point races are occurring in all three weekly divisions with Bobby Wilberg leading Tom Gille in the Madison Late Models 544-513. In the Limited Late Models Wilberg trails Scott Broughton by just three points (680-677). In the Bandits Steve Dickson continues to lead with a 674-624 margin over Bobby Selsing Jr. Hot laps begin at 4:45 with qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. Saturday night is the Open Wheel Extravaganza presented by Pepsi with five divisions in action led by the USAC Regional Midgets on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. Four divisions will be racing on the quarter mile led by the return of the Ford Focus Midget Series that raced at MIS in 2006. Three new divisions make their debut on Saturday night with the Kenyon Midgets, Formula Indy Racing Association, and Rascal Outlaws on track for a night of excitement. “The majority of the drivers will be making their first ever appearances at MIS so it should be very interesting to see who can set their car up the best and adjust to a new track,” added Grueneberg. Chett Gehrke of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, leads the point race in the USAC Ford Focus Midgets coming into this week. Gehrke topped the field at MIS in their 30 lap feature in 2006. James Robertson is the point leader in the USAC Regional Midgets while Kyle Hamilton leads the Kenyon Midgets. Cars from the UMARA Series are also expected to be at MIS including David Byrne of Shullsburg, Wisconsin, who had his car at MIS earlier in the season to hot lap. A special practice session for the open wheel cars will take place on Saturday afternoon from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. After a short break, hot laps will begin at 4:45 with qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. Fans will be happy to know that regular admission prices apply for each night of racing with adult admission set at $12.00 with students (12-16) $10.00 and kids eleven and under free.
