A Big Night of Racing on Swiss Colony Night at MIS:

Morrissey, Stevens, Selsing Jr., McNamara, and Moyer Go Home With the Checkered Flags

By John Wells

Friday, August 10, 2007 (Oregon, WI)

It was a hot night of racing on Swiss Colony Night at Madison International Speedway with five divisions in action. When the night came to an end it would be Andrew Morrissey, Chad Stevens, Bobby Selsing Jr., Max McNamara, and Aaron Moyer claiming top honors.

Morrissey Back in Victory Lane

Andrew Morrissey had to like his chances when he found out he was starting on the outside of the first row in the Swiss Colony 50 for the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models. In a nearly caution-free feature, Morrissey led wire to wire to pick up his division leading fourth feature win of the season.

With Nathan Oppliger starting alongside Morrissey, the DeForest driver wasted no time in jumping out to the lead and by lap 4 had extended that lead to nearly ten car lengths. By then Jeremey Miller was up to second followed by Dan Lensing, Bobby Wilberg, and Tom Gille.

It would be Gille who would make the most progress behind the leader as he passed Wilberg for fourth on lap 8 and ten laps later made it by Lensing for third. By lap 22 he powered by Miller for second. The only problem was Morrissey's lead had grown and Gille needed a caution flag.

In a division that has seen its share of caution flags this year, it appeared that this event could stay green the entire way. However, a spinning car in turn four on lap 40 brought out the first and only caution of the race and gave Gille the opportunity he needed.

On the restart Morrissey was able to maintain his lead and was able to hold off Gille for the win. Rounding out the top five were Lensing, Wilberg, and Jason Tyler.

“I didn't qualify well tonight. It worked out with a pretty good starting position,” said Morrissey in a post race interview.

Nathan Haseleu set fast time with a lap of 18.231 with heat race wins going to Morrissey and Wilberg.

Stevens Takes Home Limited Late Model Win

After winning his heat race earlier in the night, Chad Stevens had one goal in mind for the feature. “Now if we could just move up one spot. That 28 car is awfully fast though,” a reference to last week's runner-up finish behind Bobby Wilberg. But tonight belonged to Stevens who moved up one spot and won his first-ever feature at MIS.

Twelve cars took the green flag in the Rockweiler Insulaton Limited Late Model 30 lap feature with Mark Miller and Cliff Rucks bringing the field to the green flag. Unfortunately, it took three tries before the race could stay green as two spins brought out the caution flag early.

Finally the race stayed green and it would be Miller and Rucks racing side by side for the first three laps before Miller took the lead on lap 4. Shortly thereafter the caution flag came out again for another spin.

The restart would find Miller on the point followed by Rucks, Stevens, Brady Liddle, and Bobby Wilberg. Miller would continue to hold off the field with Stevens up to second and ready to challenge for the lead.

Miller would continue to lead until the caution flag came out on lap 16 just after Stevens passed him coming out of turn two. After the restart Miller would lead one more lap before surrendering the top spot to Stevens on lap 18.

With Stevens running out front, Wilberg and Ryan Golade would move up to second and third respectively on lap 20 and appeared to have something to challenge Stevens. But Stevens would not be denied as he cruised to victory. Wilberg would finish second followed by Goldade, Scott Broughton, and Liddle.

“This is great. This is something we've wanted for a long time,” said a very happy Stevens from victory lane.

Wilberg was the fast qualifier with a lap of 18.914. Heat wins went to Rucks and Stevens.

Selsing Edges Dickson for Bandit Win

Bobby Selsing Jr. and Steve Dickson put on another classic battle in the 20 lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits with Selsing Jr. holding off Dickson for the win.

Alex Lee and Brandon Skolaski drove the field of eight cars to the green flag. After racing side by side for the first lap, Skolaski would get out to the lead closely followed by Chester Ace.

Skolaski would see his lead go away on lap 5 when he was passed by Ace. Ace opened up some distance between himself and the field with Dickson up to second and Selsing Jr. third on lap 7. On lap 11 with Ace running on the inside, Dickson pulled alongside him on the outside to challenge for the lead.

With Ace holding down a slight advantage, Selsing Jr. joined the mix and got by Ace on lap 17 for the lead with Dickson right behind. Dickson would do everything he could to get by Selsing Jr. but would be unable to do so on this night as Selsing Jr. held him off to win his fourth feature of the 2007 season

“Wow. This was another good race,” said Selsing Jr. after collecting his trophy in victory lane who indicated his car had not been running well in the heat race. “We had to make some adjustments.” It paid off for the young driver from Fort Atkinson who is still second in the points behind Dickson.

For the first time in 2007 the Bandits qualified with Selsing Jr. setting fast time and a new track record with a lap of 15.415. Ace won the heat race.

It's Not Over Until It's OverÉMcNamara Wins in Legends

“You just never know,” said Max McNamara after winning his first ever feature at Madison International Speedway in the Legends.

Rich Miller and Cody Townsend brought the field of eleven Legends to the green flag in their 20 lap feature with Townsend taking the early lead. But it would be the veteran Herman Greining who had the most speed as he powered to the lead on lap 3.

Greining appeared to be the man to beat as he quickly built up a solid lead over the field. On lap 8, Kyle LaPier had worked his way up to second when suddenly Greining's mount lost power and would eventually pull off the track.

With LaPier leading out front, Blake Brown, who had won three in a row in the Legends, was up to second. On lap 12 Brown moved to the outside and passed LaPier for the lead coming out of turn four. By lap 16 the two young drivers from Illinois were side by side and all of the ingredients were in place for a thrilling finish. The only question was would Brown win his fourth or would LaPier pick up his first win.

As the two headed into the last lap, Brown had a slight advantage over LaPier with McNamara sitting in third. As Brown came out of turn four he spun with LaPier also off line. This opened up the door for McNamara who would only lead the race for about fifty feet but pick up the win. Brown would be placed second followed by LaPier, Dave Townsend, and Cody Townsend.

The Legends also qualified for the first time this year with McNamara setting fast time with a lap of 14.126Éa new track record. Greining and LaPier won the heat races.

Bandoleros Win Goes to Moyer

Aaron Moyer won his second feature of the season at MIS by topping a field of seven cars in the 15 lap feature event.

The front row of Vern Fagerberg Jr. and Moyer would set the pace as the two fought it out for the lead with Fagerberg Jr. leading the first lap before being overtaken by Moyer on lap 2. Moyer's lead would hold until lap 6 when Fagerberg Jr. reclaimed the point.

After a caution for a spin on lap 7, Fagerberg continued to lead. On lap 10 Moyer would challenge for the lead on the outside and one lap later successfully passed Fagerberg Jr. for the lead. Moyer would never look back as he worked his way through lapped traffic and sprinted to the checkered flag. Following Moyer at the line would be Fagerberg Jr., Blake Brown, Jesse Bernhagen, and Caylie Duncanson.

Fagerberg Jr. won the heat race.

Next Friday night at Madison International Speedway the Boucher Group presents the annual “Fireworks Extravaganza” presented by Thunder Cat Fireworks.
