It's Season Championship Night This Friday at MIS

By John Wells

It all comes down to one final night of point racing to determine the 2007 track champions at Madison International Speedway. This Friday night is First Supply Season Championship Night at MIS with champions set to be crowned in all three weekly divisions.

Two years ago Bobby Wilberg captured dual titles in the Super Late Models and Madison Late Models and became the first driver in MIS history to accomplish such a feat. Last year he won the Madison Late Model title but came up just short in his quest for the Limited Late Model crown. This year Wilberg goes into the final night of the season leading both divisions.

The battle for the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Model will no doubt come down to the final lap of their 50 lap feature with Wilberg leading Tom Gille by just five points coming into Friday. Wilberg leads Gille 826-821 going into the final points night. However, a third driver, Andrew Morrissey, is still mathematically alive in the race as he sits in third place with 797 points. Considering the wlid and crazy things that have happened in Madison Late Model features this year anything can happen.

Drivers are credited points for both qualifying and heat races. Five points can be the difference between one driver finishing one spot higher than the other driver in the feature or a good qualifying effort as opposed to a slow time.

Who can forget last year's MLM finish when Travis Sauter, who had led the points race most of the season, saw disaster strike in the feature when he suffered his lowest finish of the year. But the difference in points doesn't always come down to the feature finishes. Over the course of the season qualifying is very important since fast time is worth twelve points and a driver timing it eleventh or beyond earns only one point. In a close race every point counts.

Wilberg has a 1021-976 lead over Scott Broughton in Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models going into Friday night. The forty-five point difference makes it tough for Broughton, but a driver can make up that many points in a single night. However, it would take a combination of a high finish for Broughton and a low finish from Wilberg in the feature for it to happen. The key factor in this scenario is the number of cars in the feature on Friday night as the division has witnessed lower car counts the past few nights.

Steve Dickson has had one goal all season long and that has been to win a track championship. Going into the final night he is in a position to achieve that goal as he leads Bobby Selsing Jr. 1012-975 in the race for the Roto Rooter points title. Once again, a thirty-seven point margin can easily be made up in one night but it would mean Dickson would have to finish back in the pack in the feature. The Bandit car count has typically been ten to twelve carsÉthat's a forty-four point swing from top to bottom.

As they say in racing, “Anything can happen and it usually does!”

Two other divisions will also be racing on Friday night at the USST Super Trucks have been rescheduled after last week's rainout. The RX Automotive Hobby Stocks will be making their second appearance of the 2007 season and will also be on the September 7th racing program.

This will make for an exciting night of racing as we enjoy First Supply Season Championship Night this Friday at MIS.

Although Friday night is the final points night of the season it is not the final race night of the year. It's Tribute to America Night on September 7th when the Wisconsin Challenge Series and the super late models return to MISalong with the Bandits, Hobby Stocks, Legends, Bandoleros, and a trailer race. Many special activities are also planned as MIS honors those who serve our country.

The MIS Fall Classic featuring fourteen racing divisions will take place on Friday, September 21st and Saturday, September 22nd. Check out the Fall Classic link on our website for more information.
