MONDAY ADDS NAME TO FIRST TIME WINNERS LIST, CHAMPIONSHIP CHASE TIGHTENS!

By Jeffrey Sachse

Friday, September 7, 2007 (OREGON, WI) - Andy Monday of Appleton, became the fourth first time winner in eight events held thus as during the 2007 Wisconsin Challenge Series season taking the win in the Tribute to America 100 held at Madison International Speedway.

Monday, who normally competes at Wisconsin International Raceway has adapted well to the high-banked half-mile MIS oval, having has several strong showings in past WCS efforts at the raceway. For Monday, a series regular the past several seasons, it was his first career Wisconsin Challenge Series victory.

The 100 lap contest was slowed only twice for minor incidents, and the event had plenty of late race drama, as local favorite Andrew Morrissey managed to close within a car length with five laps to go in the contest, as the pair approached lapped traffic. Showing great sportsmanship several lapped cars dove out of the way during the final circuits of the contest leaving the duo toe settle the battle on their own. With a clear track ahead, Monday managed to open the lead back up to three car lengths, leaving Morrissey with his second, runner-up finish of the 2007 season. Frank Kreyer, who had pressured Monday for the lad throughout much of the first half of the contest would finish in the third spot, as a trio of drivers dueled for that position right down to the wire. Two-time and defending series champion Nathan Haseleu would finish in the fourth spot, just ahead of another two-time WCS title winner, Mark Eswein who finished fifth.

At the drop of the green flag Monday would sprint ahead of polesitter Nick Hammer to take and early lead, Kreyer, working the high line would swing past Hammer into second before the first caution due to Blashe's spin on lap three.

Underway again Monday would show the way, with Kreyer hanging tight to Monday's rear bumper. Hammer would filter into third, with Eswein following in fourth. Morrissey, the third fastest qualifier on the day had started in the ninth spot was was on the move early reaching fifth with a pass of Richards on lap ten.

Out front Kreyer stayed glued to Monday's rear bumper making several attempts to get under Monday coming off turn four. By lap 25, Monday was still showing the way, with Kreyer still giving chase, as the pair lapped several competitors it gave Kreyer a brief opportunity to work to the inside, but Monday was able to fend off the challenge and by the lap 40 mark, Monday began to extend his lead. Hammer would continue in the third spot, but was facing heavy pressure from both Eswein and Morrissey who was still searching for a way to move up in the field.

The second and final caution of the contest occurred on lap 45 when Selle slowed suddenly in turn three and spun. He was narrowly avoided by newly crowned Madison International Speedway champion Bobby Wilberg, who had won titles in both the Madison Late Model and Limited Late Model division's.

With the field bunched for the restart Monday accepted the green flag, and Kreyer immediately went to work on taking the lead. Working to the inside, Kreyer got under Monday as the two ran wheel to wheel around the track. After two laps of side by side racing, Monday again began to show his speed, pulling back ahead of Kreyer, who now had to face the challenges of Morrissey who had surpassed Hammer on the restart.

Morrissey was able to work the bottom of the track taking the second spot from Kreyer as the pair entered turn three heading for the start of lap 60. The battle between Kreyer and Morrissey however allowed Monday to build up a dozen car length lead as the race approached 30 laps to go.

In the battle for the season long point chase, Haseleu was hoping to steal the point lead having secured the fourth spot, closing on Kreyer. As the race closed into the final 20 laps Morrissey began to nibble away at Monday's lead, and as Monday cautiously worked the lapped cars, Morrissey was able to draw within a car length with ten laps to go.

Catching Monday and making a passing attempt however proved to be two different things, and as the pair continued to work the final ten laps, Monday was again able to slightly increase his lead. Over the final two laps, Morrissey again closed, making an all out effort on the final lap. The effort would fall just short however as Mon day reached the line for the victory.

Kreyer was able to fend off both Haseleu and Eswein for the third spot as the group completed the top five. Hammer would run solidly to claim sixth, his best career WCS feature finish. Richards was seventh followed by Wisconsin International Raceway competitors Kyle Calmes and Tim Rothe in eighth and ninth respectively. Wilberg would complete the top ten finishers.

Blake Brown Wins Number Four

“Downtown” Blake Brown won his fourth INEX Legends feature of the season by topping an eight car field in the twenty lap feature.

Rich Miller and Tim Narr led the field to the green flag to start the race but a spin in turn one on the first lap forced a complete restart. On lap 2 Brown worked his way to the front and took the lead.

With Brown leading, Max McNamara powered his way up to second and looked to be able to challenge the leader. But Brown would simply be too strong as McNamara could get no closer than two car lengths despite a couple of restarts due to cautions and with three laps to go Brown checked away from the field and cruised to victory.

Following Brown and McNamara at the line were Alex Arelano, Vern Fagerberg Jr., and Tim Narr. McNamara won the heat race.

Brown leads the MIS points race for the Legends with 483 points followed by Matt Booker with 325 points and McNamara at 296 points.

One point race remains on the MIS schedule for the Legends and that will be part of the MIS Fall Classic on Friday, September 21st.

Moyer Masters Bandoleros

Adam Moyer saved the best for last as he won his third feature of the season at MIS with a dramatic last lap pass in the INEX Bandoleros fifteen lap feature.

Caylie Duncanson and Moyer comprised the front row with Duncanson showing the most speed early on as she wasted no time getting out to the lead. Moyer had dropped to fourth by lap 4 with Jesse Bernhagen up to second on lap four.

By lap eleven Moyer had maneuvered his way up to second when the leader spun bringing out the caution flag. This moved Moyer into the lead followed by Bernhagen and Fagerberg.

Moyer's lead would be short-lived as Bernhagen grabbed the lead on the restart. When the white flag flew Moyer would go to the outside and make the pass of Bernhagen to pick up the win. Rounding out the top five were Fagerberg Jr., Duncanson, and Jimmy Uteg III.

Bernhagen won the heat race.

The race for the points championship finds Bernhagen leading Duncanson by a 387-370 margin with Moyer in third at 365 points despite missing one race. The final points event of the season will be on Friday, September 21st as part of the MIS Fall Classic.

Stephenson Cashes in for Hobby Stock Win

Rodger Stephenson has come pretty close to winning an RX Automotive Hobby Stock feature this season at MIS. Earlier he led most of the way only to get edged out at the stripe. Tonight Stephenson made sure history would not repeat itself as he motored his way to the win in the twenty lap feature.

Brad Warthum and Bill Robinson led the way to the green flag with Warthum jumping out to the early lead. However, Nick Newton was going to make a big statement early on as he took over the top spot on lap 2.

Following a caution on lap 5, Stephenson would move up to second and quickly began putting the pressure on Newton. By lap 8 Stephenson was ready to make the move and powered his way past Newton.

With Stephenson in front, Newton, Mike Storkson, and Jim Robinson were fighting it out for second with Storkson taking the spot on lap 13 until Robinson moved by him two laps later.

But tonight would belong to Stephenson who held off Robinson for the win followed by Storkson, Newton, and Bill Robinson.

The heat race was won by Willy Schreiber with fast time going to Jim Robinson with a lap of 15.028.

Selsing Jr. Takes the Checkered Flag in Bandits

Bobby “Batboy” Selsing Jr. cruised his way to his sixth feature win of the 2007 season by topping a field of seven Roto Rooter Bandits.

Brandon Skolaski took the early lead in the twenty lap feature followed by Jared Apel. On lap 3 Selsing Jr. and Alex Jones made their way up to second and third respectively.

On lap 5 Jones vaulted past Skolaski for the lead with Selsing Jr.up to second with Chester Ace third.

Jones would only hold the lead for a single lap before Selsing Jr.grabbed the top spot on lap 6. From that point on it would be all Selsing Jr. with Jones and Ace putting on a good show for second.

On lap 13 Ace would pass Jones on the outside for second, but he would never have enough on this night to catch Selsing Jr. who sprinted his way to the win.

Ace would hold off Jones for second followed by Skolaski and Apel.

Selsing Jr. set fast time with a lap of 15.315 with Ace winning the heat race.
