A New Classic Comes to MIS

By John Wells

Long-time race fans at Madison International Speedway will tell you that it's been at least twenty years since a major end of the season event was held at Madison. Back in the 1970's and early 1980's it was not uncommon to see Madison hosting a major racing program in the fall. For years fans have been calling for a return to those days when they could see more than a dozen divisions and hundreds of cars in action. Well, the time is now!

Madison International Speedway will be hosting the first annual MIS Fall Classic on Friday, September 21st and Saturday, September 22nd featuring racing action on both the half-mile and quarter mile and fourteen exciting divisions on the program. “We are really excited about bringing the Fall Classic to MIS. This is something the drivers and fans have asked about for many years. This year we were able to put everything together to see it become a reality,” said MIS General Manager Dave Grueneberg.

The two-day show gets started on Friday, September 21st with seven divisions in action. Highlighting the racing program will be the Madison Late Models presented by Weaver Auto Parts. All ASA Late Model Series cars are also welcome to compete in this division. “I've received a lot of inquiries from the ASALM cars and we are going to include them in the show,” said Grueneberg.

Returning to MIS for the Fall Classic and competing on the half-mile will be the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman. Four divisions will take to Wisconsin's Most Challenging Quarter Mile with the Roto Rooter Bandits, Hobby Stocks, INEX Legends, and INEX Bandoleros on tap. A special “Double O” race is also scheduled where cars will complete laps on both the quarter and half-mile tracks.

The racing action really heats up on Saturday, September 22nd when the Super Late Models, Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, and USST Super Trucks highlight the racing program. Also in action will be the American Short Trackers / International Four Cylinders, FIRA, Modifieds, and a four cylinder enduro.

“Between the two days there's really something for everyone,” added Grueneberg.

Pit gates open both days at 10:00 AM with hot laps commencing at Noon. Qualifying on Friday begins at 5:00 with racing at 7:00. On Saturday qualifying is set for 4:00 with racing at 6:00.

All rules and entry information is available at madisoninternationalspeedway.com.

“We really want to make this something big. We are fielding calls from throughout the Midwest and we are hopeful that the drivers and fans will make this a new tradition at MIS,” noted Grueneberg. “It's going to be a lot of fun.”

Madison International Speedway is located on Sunrise Road just south of Highway 138 between Stoughton and Oregon. For more information you can contact the track office at 608.835.9700.
