A Night of Features at MIS Fall Classic By John Wells Saturday, September 22, 2007 (Oregon, WI) After the weather took a turn for the worse on Friday night forcing the cancellation of the racing program, MIS General Manager Dave Grueneberg had a tough decision to make. With a pit full of drivers ready to race, Gruenberg decided to bring everyone back on Saturday and run twelve divisions in one night. As a result, the fans saw nearly 400 laps of feature racing as part of the first annual MIS Fall Classic. Twelve champions will have their names in the record books as the first group of winners of the MIS Fall Classic. Dave Feiler in the Super Late Models, Bret Widdis in the USST Super Trucks, Brian Hoppe in the Limited Late Models, Jeremy Miller in the Madison Late Models, Jay Kalbus in the Area Sportsman, Kyle Stark in the Bandits, Brent Nottestad in the the American Short Trackers, Kyle Riedner in both the International and Four Cylinder Challenge, Willy Schreiber in the Hobby Stocks, Neal Gillentine in the FIRA, and Wes Biswell in the Modifieds were all winners. Feiler Takes Home Super Late Model Win Past track champion Dave Feiler returned to Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile in grand style as he outbattled Nathan Haseleu to win the 75 lap caution-free Super Late Model feature. Jeff Storm and Kyle Kinder led the field to the green flag with Kinder grabbing the early lead. Kinder quickly built a sizeable margin over the field and looked like he would be the car to beat. By lap 10 Feiler had worked his way up to a distant second behind Kinder. Lap by lap Feiler was closing the gap and on lap 22 the Kinder lead was down to just two car lengths. On lap 24 Feiler was on Kinder's rear bumper and would eventually power by on the inside for the lead. One lap later Andrew Morrissey would get by Kinder for second. Unfortunately for Kinder his night would end early as mechanical problems for him to the pits. Out front Feiler built up a lead over Morrissey with Nathan Haseleu and Mark Eswein taking over second and third respectively on lap 44. Both Haseleu and Eswein started to gain ground on Feiler and by lap 56 it was clearly going to be a three car race. Despite the efforts of Haseleu and Eswein, Feiler was clearly the car to be as he held off the field to take home the checkered flag. Morrissey would hang on for fourth followed by Steve Rubeck. Dan Lensing set fast time with a lap of 17.602. Bret Widdis Takes the Checkered Flag in USST Super Trucks Manistique, Michigan, driver Bret Widdis made his long journey to Madison International Speedway well worth it as he bested the field to win his first-ever USST Super Truck race. At the start of the race all eyes were on the #83 of Andy Jirik who won the last time out at MIS but would be starting at the tail end of the field. Would Jirik be able to work his way up to the front? With a great field of eighteen very competitive trucks, Jirik had his work cut out for him. Fifteen year old Cole Howland and Tom Roney led the field of eighteen to the green flag with Roney jumping out to the early lead before the caution flag waved on lap 3 for a spin. Following the restart the caution flag would come out again two laps later for a stalled truck. After the green flag waved again Widdis quickly moved up to second and on lap 6 passed Roney for the lead. By lap 8 Andy Jirik had moved his way up to sixth only to have a tire go down that forced him to the pits at the same time his brother Tony also had problems and would need to be towed to the pits. The delay worked to Andy's liking as he was able to rejoin the field. Fred Oswald and Gary Cerny were now in position to challenge Widdis as they moved up to second and third. The caution flag would come out on laps 15, 19, and 20 with Widdis able to hold off the pair of veteranswith each restart. Despite all of Cerny's efforts to go for the lead, Widdis would prove to be the best tonight as held off the competition and took home the win. Cerny would finish second followed by Oswald, Roney, and Roger Egan. Andy Jirik set fast time with a lap of 19.132. Brian Hoppe Victorious in Limited Late Models Always tough at MIS, Brian Hoppe topped a field of twenty-five cars to win the 40 feature for the Limited Late Models. Michael Bilderback and Doug Hahn paced the field to the green flag with Hahn holding a slight advantage early before giving up the lead to Bilderback on lap 2. Bilderback, the youngest ever feature winner on the half-mile and only driver to win a feature on the half mile and quarter mile, looked very strong early on as he built up a solid lead before the first caution flag came out on lap 7 for a spin. Bilderback continued to lead following the restart with Hahn in second, Jim Dragich in third and Hoppe up to fourth and Bobby Wilberg in fifth. The caution flag would once again wave on lap 17 and tighten up the field for the restart. Hoppe, who would restart in third behind Bilderback and Hahn, would overtake Hahn one lap later and on lap 20 slide by Bilderback for the lead. Out front Hoppe would prove to be simply too tough as he cruised his way to victory lane followed by Wilberg, Bilderback, Hahn, and Dragich. Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 18.792. Madison Late Model Win to Jeremy Miller Jeremy Miller won the 50 lap feature for the Madison Late Models. Nathan Oppliger and John Wood brought the field to the green flag, but it would be Andrew Morrissey who would take the early lead. Rick Corso and Jeremy Miller would quickly move to second and third behind Morrissey with Miller getting by Corso for second on lap 15. On lap 21 Miller made the move of the race as he dropped to the inside of Morrissey coming into turn three and made the pass for the lead. Despite a caution on lap 34, Miller would easily hold off the field to pick up the Fall Classic win. Morrissey would finish in second followed by Dan Lensing, Zack Riddle, and Corso. Fast time was set by Lensing with a lap of 18.189. Kalbus Captures Area Sportsman Win Jay Kalbus is always tough on the half-mile at MIS where he has won four features in past years. Kyle Watters and Russ Nicholson comprised the front row in the 25 lap feature with Watters gaining the early advantage before the caution flag came out for oil on the track. When the green waved again, Tory Bagley, making his first ever start in a stock car, would power his way to the lead. Despite a couple of caution flags, Bagley continued to hold down the point and it appeared like he had the car to finish the deal. But the veteran Kalbus would have something to say about that as he cut the gap and moved up to challenge Bagley. The two would be side by side on lap 19 before Kalbus would get by the leader one lap later. Kalbus would not be able to run away from Bagley as the young driver from Cambridge battled side by side for the lead. However, in the end it would be Kalbus holding off Bagley at the line to pick up the win. Rounding out the top five were Scott Riedner, RC Van Ransull, and Mike Heelein. Setting fast time on Friday night and tying a track record was Corey Jankowski with a lap of 19.921. Kyle Stark on Top in Bandits Kyle Stark drove an impressive race to win the 25 lap feature for the Bandits. Alex Lee and Nick Lasher brought the field to the green flag with Lasher jumping out to the early lead before being passed by 2007 MIS Track Champion Steve Dickson on lap 3. Stephen Scheel and Stark would be up to second andthird by lap 7 with Stark getting by Scheel on lap 12 while Dickson held down the point. On lap 14 Stark was up to challenge Dickson and made an inside pass for the lead while coming out of turn four. One lap later Scheel would get by Dickson for second. Things got interesting when Stark came up on lapped traffic on lap 21 but somehow he was able to get through and maintain his lead until the caution flag came out on lap 24 settting up a green-white-checkered scenario. But this night belonged to Kyle Stark, who, despite being announced as his brother Gary, held off the field to pick up the win. Rounding out the top five were Scheel, Dickson, Chester Ace, and Rob Nuti. Stark also set fast time with a lap of 15.429. Wild Ride for Riedner in the Internationals Kyle Riedner made the most of his return to MIS in 2007 as he picked up an exciting win the International Four Cylinder division. Things didn't look good for Riedner early in the race as he was sent to the pits for leaking fuel. A quick adjustment and Riedner was back but would be in the twelfth position. Peter Shelley and Pete Seitz battled it out for early supremacy before the caution came out for the fuel leak. Mike Bingham would take over the lead on lap 6 while Riedner had worked his way up to fifth when the caution came out on lap 8 for a spin. Bingham would continue to lead followed by Shelley and Kyle Smith. Smith would pass Shelly for second on lap 10 and take over the lead one lap later with an inside pass of Bingham going into turn one. On lap 13 Riedner was all the way up to second and by lap 16 was side by side with Smith challenging for the lead. On lap 21 Riedner moved by Smith on the backstretch for the lead and never looked back. Smith would finish second followed by Scotty Hoeft, George Sparkman, and Bingham. Mark English set fast time with a lap of 15.095. Brent Nottestad Takes Home AST Win Brent Nottestad really had things hooked up as he won the twenty-five lap American Short Tracker feature. It looked like this race belonged to the veteran George Sparkman who got out to the early lead from his starting position on the outside of row one. Zack Rodriguez, Kenny Marcellis, and Steve Allman all gave chase of Sparkman but simply didn't have enough for him. However, Nottestad had moved up to third on lap 10 and overtook Allman on lap 14 for second place. Nottestad proved that he would have enough for Sparkman as he moved to the inside coming out of turn four on lap 16 and took over the lead. From that point on it was all Nottestad who sprinted his way to victory lane followed by Sparkman, Allman, Aaron Rude, and Marcellis. Nick Cina set fast time with a lap of 14.580. Hobby Stock Win to Willy Schreiber Willy Schreiber won the twenty five lap feature for the Hobby Stocks. Mike Storkson and Jarrod Sutherland showed the way to the green flag with Storkson getting out and taking the early lead. Storkson would maintain the lead until the caution came out on lap 4 for a spin. The restart was not a good one for Storkson who got loose on the backstretch and gave up the lead to Dustin Ward. Following Ward past Storkson were Jim Robinson and Schreiber. On lap 12 Schreiber overtook both Robinson and Ward to move into the lead. Despite serious efforts from Robinson, Schreiber would be too tough for the field as he hung for the win. Robinson would finish second followed by Alex Papini, Al Syvrud, and Rodger Stephenson. Kyle Stark set fast time with a lap of 14.709. Other Divisions Neal Gillentine made it two for two in 2007 at MIS as he dispatched the field of six Formula Indy Racing Association cars to win the twelve lap feature. Grant Greenfield finished second followed by Vern Brown, Tim Roach, Lyle Phillips, and Gary Cooper. It's been a long time since Wes Biswell has been at MIS, but he made the trip a memorable won as he won the ten lap feature for the Modifieds by edging out Ron Schmitt. Chuck Eberhardt was third and Brian Paulson finished fourth. The final event of the night was the Four Cylinder Challenge which was won by Kyle Riedner. Kyle Padfield finished second followed by Cody Strese and Jim Taylor. This completes the 2007 racing schedule at Madison International Speedway. Fans and race teams are urged to monitor the track website at madisoninternationalspeedway.com for off-season updates. Tentative plans are for an early-May season opener in 2008. Track owner Terry Kunes and General Manager Dave Grueneberg would like to thank all of the drivers, teams, sponsors, and fans who supported MIS in 2007.
