Liddle, Morrissey, Dickson, Rude, and Robinson Take Home Checkered Flags at MIS

By John Wells

Friday, July 27, 2007 (Oregon, WI)

A big night of racing on JP Cullen and Sons Night at Madison International Speedway saw five drivers go home with checkered flags led by MIS regular Brady Liddle who captured the flag in the Big 8 Series event for limited late models. Andrew Morrissey won in the Madison Late Models, Steve Dickson in the Bandits, Aaron Rude in the American Short Trackers, and Jim Robinson in the Hobby Stocks.

Kevin Ramsell has provided us with the story on the Big Eight Series race which also counted for points in the weekly Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models.

Liddle Gets Huge Win in Big 8 Series

Brady Liddle has been a long time competitor at Madison International Speedway. In fact, he was racing with a chassis that was built in 1994. Tonight, he picked up his biggest win in his career as he became another first time winner in the Big 8 Series action at MIS.

Prior to the start of the event, Big 8 Series officials along with Madison International Speedway officials decided to reduce the feature event to 38-laps as the track neared its curfew time.

Mike Ehde and Brady Liddle led the field of 30 cars to Greg Oliver's green flag for the start of the feature event. The two battled side-by-side for the lead after the first lap.

The first caution flew on lap 2 when Tom Schuette spun coming out of turn four. Liddle was shown as the leader and he led the field back to the single file re-start.

On the re-start, Ricky Bilderback made a quick inside move on Ehde to take over the second spot going into turn one while Liddle jumped out to a five car length lead.

Jeff Steenburgen moved from his fifth starting spot to take over third from Ehde on lap 9. It wasn't an easy pass as the two got together in turn two and it allowed Steenbergen to bolt into third.

At the halfway mark, Liddle continued his lead over Bilderback while working his way through lap traffic. Steenbergen was in third with Scott Broughton chasing him down. Ryan Goldade was running in fifth.

The second caution flew on lap 27 when Matt Byrne and current Big 8 Series point leader Jeremy Miller got together in turn one causing Miller to spin. Both were sent to the rear.

The caution flag would allow the top five to close up nose to tail without lap traffic in between as they were getting spread out from the long green flag run.

Liddle continued to lead over Bilderback on the re-start with 12 laps to go.

The third caution flew with seven laps to go when Miller and Cliff Rucks got together in turn one.

Liddle continued to lead with five laps to go, while Steenbergen looked at taking over second from Bilderback. This allowed Liddle to pull out to a huge lead. With three laps to go, Steenbergen bolted to second going down the backstretch.

Steenbergen would run out of laps in his attempt to catch Liddle as he would go on to collect his first Big 8 Series win. Steenburgen was second with Bilderback in third. Goldade would finish fourth and Broughton rounded out the top five.

“This is the biggest win ever,” Liddle said in victory lane. “This is awesome, I would have smoked the tires off but they still have some tread left in them.”

Steenbergen and Liddle won the qualifier heats. Gary Back and Andy Niles won the positioning heat races.

Wilberg was the fast qualifier with a time of 18.820 seconds (95.642 seconds).

Two in a Row for Morrissey in Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models

Andrew Morrissey made it two in a row in the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models by winning the 50 lap feature.

Eighteen cars started the feature with Shane Morrissey and Jason Tyler bringing the field to the green flag. Tyler would have the early advantage over Morrissey with Scott Ollerman, making his 2007 Madison Late Model debut, quickly up to second followed by Zack Riddle.

Tyler continued to lead the way until the first caution of the race came out on lap 11 for a spin. The incident saw Tom Gille, who came into the night second in the points, sent to the back of the field and the car of Jeremy Miller to the pits.

Tyler's lead and his night of racing would end on the restart after he and Ollerman got together with Tyler's car up into the wall, thus, ending his night prematurely and sending Ollerman to the back of the field.

Inheriting the lead would now be Zack Riddle followed by Bobby Wilberg, Andrew Morrissey, Dan Lensing, and Shane Morrissey. A great restart by Riddle allowed him to put some distance between himself and the field before the caution came out on lap 16 for a spin.

Once again the restart was favorable for Riddle who continued to have a two car length advantage over his fellow competitors. Back in the pack, Gille was quickly moving up and was back to sixth on lap 21 and closing in on the top five.

On lap 23 a major incident occurred on the backstretch out of turn two that involved four cars and brought out the red flag. After the cars of Dann Barber and Brent Brevak got together coming out of turn two, Jaime Dorsey and Zach Reining simply had nowhere to go resulting in a four car pileup. The good news was that all of the drivers involved were okay. The bad news is that heavy damage occurred to the cars of Barber, Dorsey, and Reining with only Brevak able to return.

Riddle continued to lead after the race went green again and would continue to do so through two more cautions. On lap 34, Morrissey had closed the gap and began putting pressure on the leader with Gille close behind. Two laps later Morrissey cleared Riddle on the inside to take over the lead.

Morrissey wasted no time in quickly building up a six car advantage over Riddle and Gille who were battling it out for second until the two got together on lap 47. The incident sent Riddle into the wall and put an end to his great run.

The restart would find Wilberg now up to second followed by Jason Erickson, Dan Lensing, and Shane Morrissey. But despite his best efforts, Wilberg would be unable to get by Andrew Morrissey who took home the checkered flag in a race that took nearly fifty minutes to complete.

John Wood set fast time for the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models with cousins Shane and Andrew Morrissey winning the heat races.

Dickson Edges Selsing Jr. in Roto Rooter Bandits Feature

Steve Dickson maintained his advantage in the Roto Rooter Bandits point standings by once again holding off Bobby Selsing Jr. to win the 20 lap feature. For Dickson it was his third feature win of the 2007 season and it also marked the third time this year that Dickson and Selsing Jr. have finished one- two with Dickson coming out on top twice.

Eleven cars took the green flag with Chester Ace and Alex Jones racing side by side for the first couple of laps before Ace took the lead. Ace would hold down the top position until Dickson would get by him on lap 5. Unfortunately for Dickson, a caution flag for a spin would take away his lead as the order would go back to the last completed lap.

Ace maintained his lead following the restart for a couple more laps unitl Dickson got by him on the inside coming out of turn two on lap 7. From that point Dickson built up a solid lead over the field with Selsing Jr. racing his way up to second.

With each lap Selsing Jr. was closing the gap on Dickson and it appeared that it was going to be another classic finish as Selsing Jr. would run the high groove as he has done so well this year.

Dickson continued to lead as time was running out for Selsing Jr. The second generation driver from Fort Atkinson would do everything he could but it wouldn't be enough to get by Dickson. With his win Dickson continues to lead the point standings in the Roto Rooter Bandits with a 756-704 advantage over Selsing Jr. Coming into the night Dickson had a fifty point lead over Selsing Jr.

Heat races were won by Brandon Skolaski and Selsing Jr.

Rude Picks Up Win Number Two in Short Trackers

Aaron Rude picked up his second win of the 2007 season in the 20 lap feature for the American Short Trackers / International Four Cylinders.

Eight cars comprised the field of four cylinder cars with Randy Samples and Scott Nottestad bringing the field to the green. In his first night out at MIS in 2007, Nottestad would take his Ford Pinto to the early lead before the first caution came out on lap 3 for a spin.

Nottestad would continue to lead following the restart with Rude and Brent Nottestad fighting it our for second. Rude would eventually win the battle for second as Scott Nottestad took advantage of the duel to build up his lead over Rude.

But Rude and Brent Nottestad were closing quickly and it suddenly became a three car race. On lap 14 Rude pulled alongside Scott Nottestad for the lead and one lap later became the new leader. Brent Nottestad worked his way around Scott Nottestad for second and focused his attention on Rude.

Soon Nottestad was right up on Rude's bumper but he would be able to surpass the Pinto as Rude hung on to win.

Brent Nottestad won the heat race.

Robinson Best in Hobby Stocks

Jim Robinson won the fifteen lap feature for the RX Automotive Hobby Stocks in their 2007 season debut. The hobby stocks, who raced weekly in 2006, will also be in action on August 31, September 7, and as part of the MIS Fall Classic on September 21.

Ryan Nuti and Rodger Stephenson paced the ten car field to the green flag. Wasting no time, Stephenson grabbed the early lead with Willy Schreiber up to second. Stephenson would continue to lead until the caution flag came out for a spin on lap 11.

The restart was favorable for Stephenson as he maintained the point. Robinson had quietly worked his way up to second but with three laps to go things looked pretty safe for Stephenson.

With two laps to go Stephenson had a mirror full of Robinson but continued to hold him off. After the white flag waved and Stephenson still leading, Robinson was waiting for the perfect opportunity. With Stephenson drifting up the track just enough coming out of turn three, Robinson seized the opportunity and slid down to the inside and passed the leader coming out of turn four to take the win at the stripe. For Robinson it would be his 100th victory of his career.

Heat race wins were recorded by Nick Newton and Robinson.
