Haseleu, Kalbus, Ace and McNamara Win Championships at MIS

Wilberg, Baumeister, Heelein, Ace, and McNamara Pick up Feature Wins

Oregon, Wisconsin (Friday, August 29, 2008)

Madison International Speedway crowned four new track champions tonight as part of the Pepsi Season Championships. Nathan Haseleu won his first-ever track championship at MIS in the Weaver Auto Parts while Jay Kalbus (Bryden Motors Area Sportsman), Chester Ace (Roto Rooter Bandits), and Max McNamara (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) also won their first titles at MIS. The Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models will finish their season next week with Twin 40's as part of First Supply Tribute to America Night.

Five drivers also took home feature wins as three drivers won for the first time in 2008 in their respective divisions. Bobby Wilberg in the Super Late Models, John Baumeister Jr. in the Limited Late Models, and Mike Heelein in the Area Sportsman notched their first victories while Ace and McNamara each won for the seventh time in 2008.

Wilberg Speeds to Victory

Bobby Wilberg picked up his first feature victory of the season by winning the 50 lap feature for the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models.

Andrew Morrissey and Jacob Humphrey brought the field of thirteen super late models to the green flag with Humphrey taking the early lead closely followed by Zack Riddle. Humphrey would be unable to hold off the hard-charging Riddle who passed him for the lead on lap 9. Nathan Haseleu would power by Humphrey for second one lap later with Wilberg right behind him.

The first caution of the race came out on lap 14 for a spin in turn two. Riddle would continue to hold the point following the restart until lap 19 when Haseleu worked his way to the inside going into turn three and cleared Riddle to take the lead coming out of turn four. Not to be outdone, Wilberg would take over the second position from Riddle on lap 20.

Wilberg would continue his pursuit of Haseleu closing the gap with each lap. Finally, on lap 41 Wilberg worked his way to the inside and passed the leader coming out of turn two. From that point on and despite a caution flag coming out for a spin on lap 45, this race belonged to Wilberg who held off Haseleu for the win. Rounding out the top five were Riddle, Morrissey, and Steve Rubeck.

Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 17.669.

“This is a nice win for us. We've been doing a lot of different things with our super late model team this year and things haven't always gone so well for us. We've tried some things with the chassis this season so this is a good win,” said Wilberg. “My hat's off to Nate (Haseleu) for winning the championship. He's race and won a lot here in the past but just wasn't able to run every week,” added Wilberg.

As a result of his second place finish, Haseleu won his first-ever track championship at Madison International Speedway. Having won other track championships along with titles in two traveling series, the Pardeeville, Wisconsin, driver told the crowd how much the track championship means to him.

“This championship means a lot to me. I've grown up racing here over the years but never really had the chance to run every week for a championship so it means a lot to me and to Swiss Colony and everyone who helps out on the car. I'd also like to thank all of the fans for coming out and supporting racing here at Madison.” Finishing second in the point race was Steve Rubeck followed by Andrew Morrissey.

Baumeister Captures Limited Late Model Victory

John Baumeister Jr. outpaced a field of twenty-six Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models to win his first-ever feature at Madison International Speedway.

Andy Evraets and Chad Stevens comprised the front row as this big field came to the green flag and it took three laps of side by side racing before Evraets would be able to clear Stevens.

Unfortunately for Stevens his night would end early as a result of the first caution of the race on lap 5 when he and Scott McGettigan got together on the backstretch. Once the race went green again the caution came out right away for debris on the track.

Evraets' time as leader would be short-lived as Jason Hicks pulled alongside on lap 6 and would get by Evraets coming out of turn four on lap 7. Ryan Carlson would move his way up to second on lap 9 followed by Baumeister, Ross Kenseth, and Bobby Wilberg. A spinning car brought out the third caution of the race on lap 16.

Hicks would continue to show the way until drifting up the track in turn two on lap 23 which opened the door for both Carlson and Baumeister who easily moved past him. A spin in turn two on lap 25 would bring out the caution flag once again.

Carlson and Baumeister would battle it out for the lead with Carlson holding a slight advantage. Baumeister continuously looked for room on the inside but the opportunity did not present itself. With time and laps running out, Baumeister made his move on lap 39 when he was able to find enough room to get inside of Carlson for the lead coming out of turn two.

With Baumeister out front, the caution flag came out on lap 40 and along with it the checkered flag giving the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, driver his first-ever feature win at MIS. Carlson would finish second by .098 seconds followed by Wilberg, Kenseth, and Ryan Goldade.

“This is my first feature win ever and I'm proud to get it here at Madison. I've been waiting along time for the first one,” said Baumeister who has had a roller coaster season at MIS having suffered a broken wrist earlier in the season along with the damage to his car.

For the sixth time in 2008, Wilberg set fast time for the division with a lap of 18.891. Mike Storkson won his first-ever limited late model race by taking top honors in the twelve lap qualifying race. Evraets became the sixth different winner in as many races in the Wayne's Custom DIECAST Dash. It was Evraets' first win at MIS as well.

Heelein Wins First Feature at MIS

Mike Heelein topped a field of eight Bryden Motors Area Sportsman to win his first-ever feature at Madison International Speedway.

RC VanRansull and Scott Lawver were the first to take the green flag in the fifteen lap feature with Lawver getting out front early. By lap 3 Jay Kalbus was riding the high line around the track and pulled to the outside of Lawver to take the lead.

It appeared that Kalbus would be the class of the field until things got interesting on lap 8. Coming up on lapped traffic, Kalbus was forced to go way up the track coming out of turn one in order to get by the slower car of Chad Lurvey. As a result, Heelein would stay on the lowside and take over the lead from Kalbus.

Heelein would make the most of the situation by leading the rest of the way and holding off Kalbus for the win. A great race was going on behind the leaders as Steve Dickson was able to hold off Scott Lawver for third place. TJ Goldade would round out the top five.

Heelein set fast time for the sixth time this season with a lap of 20.318 while Kalbus won the heat race.

When asked in victory lane about his pass of the lead of lap 8 Heelein said, “I took advantage of the opportunity. It feels great to get the win.” Heelein also had an in-car camera for this race from Miracle Video.

Jay Kalbus won the track championship for the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman. “I kind of thought we had this one in the bag until the incident with the lapped car. But that's racing and I'm happy where we finished. It's great to win the championship. It's been great racing here and I had a lot of fun and we're looking forward to coming back.” Scott Lawver finished second in the points race followed by Steve Dickson.

Ace Does It Again in Bandits

Chester Ace capped off an incredible season in the Roto Rooter Bandits by taking home the checkered flag in their 20 lap feature.

Dan Lerdahl and Brandon Skolaski led the nine car field to the green flag with Brandon Skolaski getting out to the early lead closely followed by little brother Cory Skolaski. With the pair of orange cars running out front, a pack of Bandits were battling it out behind them. Stephen Scheel, Chester Ace, Kyle Padfield, and Jody Schmidt were fighting for position with Ace eventually gaining the advantage.

On lap 8 Ace would make his classic three wide move to take the lead coming out of turn four. With Ace out front, Brandon Skolaski and Scheel were racing side by side for second with Scheel eventually getting the second position.

Ace would go on to win his seventh feature of the season followed by Scheel, Padfield, Cory Skolaski, and Brandon Skolaski.

Ace set fast time with a lap of 15.438 while Padfield took home the checkered flag in the heat race.

Along with his feature win Ace also earned his first-ever track championship. “I'm not sure what happened to the car at the end. I really had to do everything I could to keep it going because I knew Scheel was right behind me. I couldn't have won this championship without all of my sponsors and everyone who has helped me out with the car. It's been a great season.” Stephen Scheel would finish the season in the runner-up position with Cory Skolaski in third place.

It's All McNamara in the Legends

Sixteen year old Max McNamara garnered his seventh feature win of the season in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

Aaron Moyer took the early lead followed closely by Michael Cooter. The caution flag came out on lap 5 for a spin in turn four.

Moyer would continue to lead with McNamara closing quickly. McNamara would take the lead on the seventh lap when he motored by Moyer for the lead coming out of turn four.

From that point on it was all McNamara who easily outdistanced himself from the six car field.

McNamara set quick time with a 13.930 seconds trip around the “Ring of Fire.” Moyer won the heat race.

McNamara also won the 2008 track championship in the division. “This is great to win the championship. Next year I'm hoping to continue racing in the Legends and do a lot of traveling throughout the Midwest.” Aaron Moyer finished the season in second place followed by Alex Arelano.
