Madison International Speedway
2008 Fall Classic Recap

A Classic Finish to the 2008 Season at MIS

Oregon, WI (Saturday, September 20, 2008)

The 2008 racing season came to a close this weekend with the running of the second annual MIS Miller Lite Fall Classic. This year a total of 291 cars and trucks made their way to Madison to compete in what is quickly becoming a fall tradition in Midwest racing.

Here is a synopsis of the racing action division by division.

Morrissey Masters Super Late Model Twin 50 Opener

Andrew Morrissey took the lead on lap 3 and never looked back as he won the first 50 lap feature for the Super Late Models.

Twenty-six cars took the green flag with Josh Wallace and Tom Gille making up the front row. Gille would get the early lead before surrendering it to Wallace on lap 2. Now it was Morrissey's turn to take the lead as he raced by Wallace on the inside coming out of turn two.

Morrissey quickly built a solid lead over the field followed by Wallace and Nathan Haseleu. By lap 12 both Jacob Humphrey and Bobby Wilberg would crack the top five but at this point it was all Morrissey was out front and cruising.

A caution on lap 26 for a spin in turn two would take away some of Morrissey's lead over Wallace and Haseleu. Despite another caution for a spin eight laps later on lap 34, Morrissey was simply too fast for the field. A great race for second place was taking place with Haseleu eventually getting by Wallace on lap 45 with Mark Eswein breaking into the top five as well.

But this race clearly belonged to Morrissey who raced his way to victory lane followed by Haseleu, Wallace, Eswein, and Humphrey.

Zack Riddle set fast time for the Super Late Models.

Wilberg Saves the Best for Last to Win Second Twin 50

Bobby Wilberg took the final checkered flag of the season at Madison International Speedway by winning the second leg of the Twin 50s for the Super Late Models.

A seventeen car invert greeted the field of twenty-five Super Late Model drivers with Tom Gille and Eric Fransen having the honors of starting in the front row.

From the start Gille would take the lead and build a sizeable margin over the field. But while most eyes in the stands might have been on Gille, it was Wilberg who was working his way up from this twelfth starting postion to break into the top five by lap 10.

But Gille didn't really wasn't too worried at this point as he was sailing away from the field and looked unbeatable. Unfortunately his margin over the field was negated when the caution flag came out on lap 11.

Gille would continue to lead after the green flag was displayed again with Nick Hammer in second and Wilberg in third. On lap 22 Hammer could no longer hold off Wilberg who took over the second spot.

Caution flags on laps 26 and 31 still resulted in a Gille lead after the restart. Gille would show the way out front until Wilberg got by going down the backstretch on lap 41. Four laps later Hammer would take back second place when he passed Gille with Mark Eswein and Dan Lensing also running in the top five.

In the end it would be Wilberg who would pick up the win followed by Hammer, Eswein, Gille, and Lensing. Andrew Morrissey would finish in sixth place which meant in the point race for the overall champion Wilberg and Morrissey would be tied at 126 points with Eswein in third with 125 points. The tiebreaker was qualifying time which meant Wilberg

Hicks Wins Friday Night Limited Late Model Feature

Jason Hicks won his first race of the season at MIS by defeating a twenty-seven car field in the Limited Late Models.

Brady Liddle and Scott McGettigan would lead the way to the green flag with Liddle getting out to the lead from the start. A spin on lap 4 would bring out the race's first caution with Liddle still leading followed by Hicks, McGettigan, Scott Broughton and Kyle Shear.

Liddle looked like the car to beat in this race as he maintained his lead after the restart only to see the caution flag come out on laps 10, 14, and 15. Liddle would continue to lead after each restart with Broughton moving into third on lap 20.

The yellow would be displayed again for a spin on lap 24 with Liddle still out front followed by Hicks, Broughton, Matt Byrne, and McGettigan.

Liddle's lead would only last one more lap as Hicks took over the lead with an inside pass coming out of turn two on lap 25 with Broughton getting by Liddle for second one lap later. On lap 27 Byrne was up to third with Ross Kenseth racing his way to fourth.

A caution on lap 36 would bring out the race's final caution and put the ingredients in place for an exciting finish. Hicks would continue to lead with Broughton and Kenseth applying heavy pressure. On the final lap it looked like it could be anyone's race and as the field came out of turn four Broughton would give it one final shot but come up short by inches. Kenseth would finish in third followed by Byrne and Liddle.

Following inspection both Hicks and Byrne received fines and a loss of fifty points each towards the overall championship.

Kenseth set fast time with Cardell Potter winning the twelve lap qualifying race.

Kenseth King of the Limited Late Models on Saturday Night

Ross Kenseth returned to victory lane by winning the 40 lap feature for the Limited Late Models and taking home with him the overall championship for the MIS Miller Lite Fall Classic for the dvision.

Brady Liddle took the early lead from the pole position with Dann Barber and Ryan Goldade fighting it out for second place behind him. Barber would eventually clear Goldade for second with Jason Hicks and Matt Byrne running in fourth and fifth respectively.

The caution flag came out on lap 6 for a spin and then again on lap 11 which resulted in both Barber and Goldade going to the back of the pack. This moved Byrne to second followed by Kyle Shear, Hicks, and Kenseth.

Looking for the lead on lap 24, Shear moved to the inside of Liddle only to see his car get loose and spin and bring out the caution flag and end his hopes of a first-ever feature win in the division at MIS.

The restart resulted in Liddle still leading the field followed by Byrne, Kenseth, Wilberg, and Kyle Jarlsberg. On lap 30 Byrne would spin bringing out the caution flag and just like Shear earlier saw his hopes of picking up a win end.

Biding his time in second place would be Kenseth who was waiting for the right opportunity. His chance came on lap 38 when he took over the lead from Liddle by making a pass on the outside coming down the frontstretch. From that point it was all Kenseth as he powered his way to the win. Liddle would hang on to second place followed by Wilberg, Hicks, and Scott Broughton.

Kenseth would finish with a combined 140 points to take home the overall championship followed by Broughton with 135 points and Brady Liddle with 125 points.

Jirik Rules in USST Super Trucks

Andy Jirik made the long haul from Minnesota well worth it as he won the 30 lap feature for the USST Super Trucks.

Bobby Yonkee and MIS veteran Gary Cerny brought the eighteen truck field to the green with Cerny wasting no time in making a statement and taking the lead. Soon it looked like the old days at MIS as Cerny was holding off another former Midwest Truck Series driver in John Wood.

Meanwhile, Jirik was quietly breaking into the top five by lap 3 and passed Lucas Korish for fourth one lap later. On lap 8 Jirik was able to get by Tom Roney for the third spot and now could focus his attention on Cerny and Wood.

With Cerny still out front, Jirik took over the second position from Wood on lap10 and was gaining on the leader. On lap 14 Cerny and Jirik were side by side coming out of turn four with Jirik edging Cerny at the stripe to take over the lead.

Defending Fall Classic champion Brett Widdis was turning some fast laps and broke into the top five and was up to fourth when the caution came out on lap 20 for a spin.

The restart was good for Jirik who would continue to lead the final ten circuits to pick up the victory followed by Cerny, Wood, Widdis, and Kurt Barfknecht.

Jirik also set fast time for the USST Super Trucks.

Arelano Wins INEX National Qualifier for Legends on Saturday Night

Alex Arelano won the 30 lap National Qualifier for the INEX Legends by topping the fifteen car field.

Fast qualifier Jimmy Hansen started on the pole and appeared to be ready to repeat his Friday night performance. Hansen quickly built a large lead over Arelano, Max McNamara, and Aaron Moyer until flames came out out of his car on lap 7 bringing out the caution flag.

This would move Arelano into the lead and it appeared like it was going to be a repeat of the weekly battle between Arelano and McNamara. Arelano would be able to hold off McNamara the rest of the way to take home the win. Rounding out the top five were Cullen Camasta, Aaron Moyer, and Dave Townsend.

Heat races were won by Andy Jones and Arelano.

Jimmy Hansen Takes the Friday Night Flag in Legends

Jimmy Hansen made the most of his first appearance at MIS this season as the Indiana driver won a caution filled race for the INEX Legends.

Fifteen cars took the green flag with the caution coming out immediately for a spin in turn one that sent cars fleeing with Rich Miller making heavy contact with outside wall bringing out the red flag.

After another caution, Adam Rawski would claim the early lead with Dave Townsend taking the lead on lap 4 before another caution flag would wave.

A series of cautions would take its toll on the field before Cullen Camasta would grab the lead from Townsend with Hansen closely behind. Following yet another caution on lap 12, Hansen would pass Camasta on the restart and never look back as he safely put some asphalt between himself and the field and picked up the win. Camasta would finish second followed by Mickey Kudlicki, Townsend, and Aaron Moyer.

The 2008 MIS Track Champion Max McNamara set fast time with Townsend and Kudlicki winning the heat races.

Heelein Best in Area Sportsman

Mike Heelein has been fast all season long and he finished off his season in strong fashion by winning the 20 lap feature for the Area Sportsman.

Fifteen cars took to Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile with Jason Dummer and Shaun Scheel bringing the field to the green flag. After two failed attempts to get the race going the third time proved to be a charm with Dummer getting out to the lead. On lap three MIS regular TJ Goldade was up for the challenge as he pulled alongside Dummer and would eventually get by him on the backstretch one lap later.

Goldade quickly put some distance between himself and his fellow competitors before a spin behind him collected five cars in turn four on lap 5 and brought out the caution flag and ending the night for both Jason Thoma and Tory Bagley.

Following the restart Goldade would continue to pace the field followed by Dummer, Chris Gantz, Steve Dickson, and Heelein. On lap 12 Heelein would move his way up to third with his sights on the second place car of Dummer. Heelein would power by Dummer on lap 15 and begin to focus his attention on the leader Goldade.

The caution flag came out on lap 18 when Steve Dickson made hard contact with the frontstretch wall. This took away the distance Goldade had built up over Heelein. Heelein wasted no time getting after Goldade as he applied heavy pressure as soon as the green flag waved. As Goldade came out of turn four he got a little loose which allowed Heelein to make the pass and take the lead. Goldade would eventually spin on the final lap to bring out the caution and for Heelein the checkered flag. Bret Schmidt, who was also involved in the lap five caution, would work his way up the field to finish second followed by Gantz, Tony Leis, and 2008 MIS track champion Jay Kalbus.

Schmidt set fast time for the division with Phil Lehl and Thoma winning the heat races.

Rude Outduels Sparkman in Short Trackers

Aaron Rude took his Ford Pinto to victory lane in the 15 lap feature for the American Short Trackers who were making their second appearance of the 2008 season on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile.

Derek Bettenhausen and Zach Rodriguez led the field of eight cars to the green flag, but it would be George Sparkman who would sprint by both to take the lead with Rude quickly up to third.

At this point it appeared to be a two car battle as Rude was right on the rear bumper of Sparkman. On lap 9 Rude was able to get to the inside of Sparkman as the two went side by side down the backstretch with Rude eventually making the pass while coming out of turn four.

But Sparkman wasn't about to give up as he fought back and on the final lap looked to the inside of Rude coming out of turn two. Unfortunately Sparkman would spin allowing Rude some breathing room the rest of the way. BJ Sparkman would finish second followed by Rodriguez, Steve Allman, and Bettenhausen.

George Sparkman won the heat race while BJ Sparkman set fast time.

Chester Ace Back in Victory Lane in Bandits

For the eighth time in 2008 Chester Ace found his way to victory lane as he won the 25 lap feature for the Bandits.

Fourteen cars took the green flag on the “Ring of Fire” with Dave Schmidt getting out to the early advantage. Ace would waste no time as he was quickly up to third by lap 3 and would slide by Kyle Riedner for second one lap later.

On lap 5 Ace would do what he's done all season long and make the outside pass of Schmidt while coming out of turn four to take the lead. With an intense battle for second between Stephen Scheel, Kyle Padfield, Riedner, and Cory Skolaski taking place in his rearview mirror, Ace was able to put a lot of space between himself and the pack. The size of Ace's lead would disappear on lap 22 when the caution flag came out for a spin.

The restart was a good one for Ace who put some space between himself and the field and cruised to victory. Padfield would win the battle for second followed by Scheel, Riedner, and Schmidt.

Following inspection the cars of Riedner and David Schmidt were disqualified.

Winning heat races were Ron Nelson and Ace with Cory Skolaski setting fast time.

Duncanson Too Fast for the Bandoleros

Once again twelve year old Caylie Duncanson proved to be too fast for the Bandoleros as she won for the fourth time in 2008 at MIS.

Kyle Vergata and Nick Carnes would fight it out for early supremacy with Vergata getting the advantage. By lap 3 Duncanson was up for the challenge as she motored by Vergata on the inside while coming out of turn four.

A spin on lap 10 warranted the caution flag and a half-lap lead for Duncanson vanished. However, she had no problems on the restart and would race away from the field for the final five laps to take home the checkered flag. Vergata would finish second followed by Morgan Melichar, John Kringas, and Carnes.

Duncanson also won the heat race. The division did not conduct qualifying.

Selsing Jr. Edges Robinson for Hobby Stock Win

Bobby Selsing Jr. held off Jimmy Robinson and a field of twenty Hobby / Pure Stocks in the fifteen lap feature on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile.

Anthony Raley and Chad Lurvey were the first to take the green flag with Lurvey leading after one lap followed by Robinson and Bart DiMattina. A spin in turn four on lap 2 brought out the first caution of the night and brought Kyle Stark's night to an early end.

After the green flag waved again Robinson would power his way past Lurvey for the led before the caution flag came out again when Brad Luck made heavy contact with the inside wall near victory lane.

Once the race resumed Robinson would continue to lead and look strong in his first appearance on the half-mile. But it was Selsing Jr. who appeared to the fastest car on the track as he was up to third on lap three and moved up to second one lap later.

On lap 8 Selsing could wait no longer as he snuck by Robinson on the inside going into turn three. With some body work flapping in the breeze, Selsing was able to keep Robinson at bay and looked to be headed towards victory lane before the caution flag came out on lap 14. This gave Robinson the opportunity that he was looking for. However, Selsing proved to be the fastest car tonight as he held off Robinson for the win. Lurvey would finish third with Scott Sauerbrei and Willy Schreiber rounding out the top five.

Following inspection the car of Lurvey was disqualified.

Luck and Rich Schumann Jr. won the heat races with Schumann Jr. also setting fast time.

Mundt Masters the Half-Mile in International Class

Rodney Mundt did it again on the half-mile as he topped a field of fifteen cars to win the 15 lap feature for the International Four Cylinders.

Joe Cross and Ken Hoff Jr. comprised the front row as the field came to the green flag with the pair running side by side for the first three laps before Cross would grab the lead. Chris Gottschalk would make his way up to second followed by Jim Pankow before Gottschalk's night came to an early end when he made heavy contact with the front stretch wall.

Pankow would take the lead on lap 7 before getting off the pace on lap 8 giving the lead back to Cross with Mundt up to second. Mundt would eventually take the lead on lap 9 when he got to the inside of Cross going into turn one and cleared him coming out of turn two.

Mundt would continue to lead the way until the caution flag came out on lap 12 for an incident in turn two near the pit entrance involving Phil Malouf, Kyle Smith, and Stephen Scheel. With the safety crew cleaning up the area and the cars taken to the pits the checkered flag would come out declaring Mundt the winner. Cross would finish second followed by Pankow, Ashley Smith, and Chad Olds.

Winning heat races were Cross and Malouf with Mundt setting the pace in qualifying.

Camden Murphy Wins Junior Division of Central States Super Cups

Camden Murphy picked up the win in the 20 lap feature for the Central States Super Cups Junior Division by topping a field of seven cars.

Early on it appeared that Kyle Brinkmann would repeat his performance from the heat race where he easily outdistanced the field.

Brinkmann would lead for the first fourteen laps before Murphy would pull up alongside and get to the outside of the leader coming out of turn four. After trading some paint, Murphy would take over the lead and hold off Brinkmann the rest of the way to take the checkered flag. Rounding out the top five were Jake Zellmer, Morgan Schissel, and Jacob VanWazer.

Once things got back to normal Gehrke and Andy Forster would be running one-two with Jeff Myers up to third on lap 5. With Gehrke safely out front, a good battle was taking place between Forster and Myers for second. Tony Velez and Erle Hoth would soon join the mix as Gehrke continued to build his lead.

Nowak Breaks Through With Mid-American Win at MIS

By Matt Panure

(Oregon, WI) September 20, 2008 - Lyle Nowak's 2008 season began with a bang when he won at the Rockford Speedway this past April. Since that time, thanks largely to five DNFs, there was not much noise coming from the Wausau, WI veteran; that is, until Saturday night's Mid-American Stock Car Series 40 lap feature event at Madison International Speedway.

“It feels good. We fell out of the points with some bad finishes but still felt like we were improving the whole time. This win is very rewarding,” said Nowak regarding his second ever victory on a half-mile.

Nowak jumped to the front of the field in a hurry from his outside row three starting spot, took the lead from pole sitter Tom McClintock on l5 and denied multiple attempts by McClintock and defending MIS race winner Jeremy Spoonmore in the late stages of the race.

The first challenger to McClintock was MASCS newcomer Jason Kolbe. The young driver from Oak Lawn, IL paced the initial circuit but was passed by McClintock on lap two. As Kolbe began to fade from McClintock's rear view mirror, Nowak started to press the rookie for second.

That battle would be delayed, however, due to a multiple car incident that stemmed from a Troy Shear Jr. spin in turn one.

On the restart, Nowak glided around the outside of Kolbe with Spoonmore in hot pursuit. Noticing the pressure mounting by Spoonmore, Nowak shot to the inside of McClintock and into the lead coming to the line on lap 15. McClintock, however, did not go away. “I thought when we got around [McClintock] we would get some distance on him,” said Nowak. “But he stayed right there and I thought he was even better than me as the race went on.”

With Nowak conducting the freight train of MASCS competitors around “Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile,” the focus began to shift to Mid-American point leader James Swan and second place driver Bill Prietzel, who entered the event trailing Swan by only 15 points.

Prietzel was having a much easier time working through traffic than his counterpart. At one point he was far enough ahead of Swan to gain back the bonus points Swan had gained by being the night's fastest qualifier. But, just after the halfway point, Prietzel's chances for a top five at MIS went up in smoke, litteraly.

While Prietzel was working his way up into the top five, smoke slowly began to pour out of his machine. As the laps clicked off, the smoke became heavier and heavier. The smoke was then accompanied by trace amounts fluid and the black flag was displayed. Prietzel ended his night on lap 26.

The top three remained the same at the 30 lap mark, but they were losing ground to fourth place Jake Finney and fifth place Brian Back.

Coming to lap 31, Spoonmore made slight contact with McClintock coming out of turn four. The bobble by McClintock and Spoonmore's slowing allowed Finney the inside line going into turn one. Finney lost control heading into the turn and brought out the second caution of the race.

After the restart, McClintock became very loose off of turn two and had to allow Spoonmore and Back past. A Kevin Moenck spin exiting turn two on lap 38 set up the climax between Nowak, Spoonmore and Back.

“Jeremy is always good here. I wasn't going to give up the inside and he knew that he needed to go to the outside,” said Nowak of the green, white, checkered situation.

When the racing resumed, Spoonmore indeed tried the outside on Nowak but was unable to find the grip to mount a final challenge. He quickly went from an offensive strategy to take the lead to going on the defensive. Back pulled side by side with Spoonmore on the final lap but was unable to make the pass before the line as the checkered fell.

Spoonmore was content to pick up his third second place finish of the season. “I wish it was first but we'll take second. The car got too loose and we got held up early on in the race,” he commented.

Swan found his way around McClintock coming back to the stripe for fourth. With that fourth place finish and fast time, Swan's lead jumped from 15 to 59 over Prietzel, unofficially.
