Madison International Speedway Prepares for 2008 Season

Monday, April 21, 2008 (Oregon, WI)

It's going to be another big year at Madison International Speedway. The sounds of exciting stock car racing will soon fill the air around MIS as the countdown to the green flag is less than two weeks away. “We think this is the most exciting schedule we've ever had at MIS,” said General Manager Dave Grueneberg when recently asked about the upcoming season.

The green flag will fly for the first time in 2008 with the season opener on Sunday, May 4th featuring the ASA Midwest Tour and Big Eight Series. This doubleheader will give fans the opportunity to see the top super late model and limited late model drivers from throughout the Midwest coming to MIS. “This is a huge opener for the fans as we are expecting nearly 100 cars to be in action,”said Grueneberg.

The opener will literally be a who's who of Midwest short track racing. Both the ASA Midwest Tour and Big Eight Series had very successful openers at Elko and Rockford respectively so the energy and enthusiasm coming into MIS is very high.

The season gets going with two practice dates on Saturday, April 26th and Saturday, May 3rd with the pits opening at 10:00 AM and on-track activity from Noon - 5:00 PM. There is no charge for grandstand admission for the practice dates.

Weekly Friday night racing begins on May 9th with five divisions taking to the track. Highlighting the weekly program will be the return of the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models. “Madison is known for its super late model racing and has a long history with drivers such as Matt Kenseth, Travis Kvapil, and Dick Trickle as past champions,” added Grueneberg. Other divisions on the half-mile will be the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models and Bryden Motors Area Sportsman with the Four Cylinder Roto Rooter Bandits and Legends taking on the challenging quarter mile.

“We are excited about our weekly program. We'll have some of the top drivers in the Midwest racing with us weekly this year. It's going to be a competitive point race in all our divisions. We will also have appearances from several other divisions during the year including the USST Super Trucks, Bandoleros, International and American Short Trackers, and more. We want to put together a great weekly program with the fans having an opportunity to see a little bit of everything,” said Grueneberg.

Drivers in the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models will also have an opportunity to compete for a national championship as part of MIS' affiliation with the ASA.

Special events will bring a variety of racing and non-racing activity to MIS in 2008. Leading the way is the RK Race Promotions Swiss Colony All Star Challenge featuring Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart scheduled for Tuesday, June 24. Following up this event will be the area's best fireworks show on Friday, June 27. The ASA Late Model Northern Series will be at MIS on Friday, July 25 and will bring drivers from throughout the Midwest to Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. The Wisconsin Challenge Series returns to MIS on Friday, September 5. The second annual Budweiser MIS Fall Classic featuring over twelve divisions is slated for September 19-20.

Two major tractor pulling events are scheduled for MIS in 2008 with the Badger State Tractor Pullers here on May 17 and the Lucas Oil Pro Pullers at MIS on September 12-13.

A “train race” is on tap for Friday, June 13. “This was pretty fun last year and drew national attention. Fans won't want to miss it in 2008,” noted Grueneberg.

MIS is also part of the ASA Educational Series in which high school students who are part of a race team or a driver can win scholarship awards of up to $25,000. A total of $400,000 in scholarships to Ohio Technical College are available this season. “What a great opportunity for our young people. We want them to know that MIS is committed to getting high school kids involved in racing. And to give them a chance to win scholarships to further their education in automotive technology demonstrates our commitment. We are very happy to have the ASA Educational Series with us in 2008,” commented Grueneberg.

The Turn Four Kids Club returns bigger and better in 2008 with recliner races, big wheel races, weekly contests, and a weekly bike giveaway just some of the events planned. “We have made a huge commitment to kids at MIS. We are one of the few venues where kids eleven and under are admitted freeÉthat's right, free! We have a playground area, weekly drawings, and one lucky boy or girl will go home with a bike. Chuck West has done an incredible job with the kids club,” said Grueneberg.

It's going to be a big year at MIS from the first green flag in May to the final checkered flag in September.
