Fredrickson and Miller Earn Opening Day Wins at MIS

Oregon, WI (Sunday, May 4, 2008)

Madison International Speedway fans endured what seemed to be a winter that would last for ever and it seemed that racing season would never come. But a beautiful spring day with sun and temperatures in the sixties along with two of the top series in the Midwest appearing on one racing program made winter seem like a distant memory.

When the day came to an end it would be Dan Fredrickson of Elko, Minnesota winning his first-ever feature at MIS in the ASA Midwest Tour Echo Chainsaw 100 and Rockton, Illinois, driver Jeremy Miller taking home top honors in the Big 8 Series.

Here are the accounts of both events from Kevin Ramsell.

Fredrickson Wins ASAMT Event

Dan Fredrickson will admit that he never had a good run at Madison International Speedway. After tonight, Madison is one of his favorite tracks as he captured the ASAMT ECHO Chainsaw 100 in front of a large crowd.

“I haven't won here and never been real good here, but had a pretty sweet car here tonight,” a happy Fredrickson stated in victory lane. “I hope we can keep going with this, it was cool to beat Carlson and Busch. And now Madison is one of my favorite tracks.”

Fredrickson held off a late charge from Steve Carlson to take his fourth ASA Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment win. “The deal here is you can't run pretty well with someone on your back bumper. But once I got two car lengths on him, I could run my line and run better.” Fredrickson stated.

Andrew Morrissey was the early leader as he got the jump at the start from polesitter Chris Wimmer. Fredrickson started tenth and worked his way to the front. On lap 45, he would get on the inside of second place runner Donny Reuvers and take over the spot.

It wasn't until lap 69 when Fredrickson would get a great run off of turn two and get on the inside of Morrissey going into turn three. As the two would race side-by-side coming off of turn four, it was Fredrickson leading the lap by a nose. Fredrickson would take over the spot going down the backstretch a lap later.

Carlson would put on a challenge for the win, but Fredrickson was just too strong for him, “I had a really good car,” Carlson stated. “Danny just had a bit more than I did in the end.”

Kyle Busch, current NASCAR Sprint Cup Points Leader, would have an up and down night as he battled with an ill handling car, “Just didn't have the car tonight, we just messed up just a little bit,” Busch stated. “But, overall it was a good night. I don't know what we did, we screwed up in qualifying which got us back there, and so that kind of hurt us having to come through and waste up our tires and stuff. Overall, it was a good finish.”

Busch didn't have an easy drive to the finish as he and Mark Eswein put on a great side-by-side battle to the finish line over the last three laps. At the line, Busch would take the spot by .007 seconds. “It was good racing; he raced me clean so that is great to have that here in this series. No one touched my bumper and I don't think I touched anyone else's.”

Josh Vadnais would come home fifth after starting 19th. Wimmer would finish sixth with Blake Horstman in seventh. Andy Monday had a solid run with an eighth place finish with Russ Blakely and Frank Kreyer rounding out the top ten.

The event saw seven caution flags fly with the worse incident coming on lap 87 when Jamie Iverson and Tim Schendel were battling for fourth when the two made contact in turns one and two causing Schendel to spin. Kyle Calmes climbed up the back of Iverson's car, but was able to continue.

For Fredrickson, it was his fourth ASAMT win and continues to be the only multiple winner in the series.

Miller Wins Big 8 Series Event

By Kevin Ramsell

Jeremy Miller and Michael Bilderback got the large crowd on hand at Madison International Speedway on their feet as the two put on a classic short track battle in the Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet feature event. At the checkers, it was the defending champion holding off the young pilot.

Bilderback led most of the 38-lap event, while Miller made a hard charge at the end. “I kinda used Mikey up there. He was pinching me on the bottom and I got a better run than him and he was slowing up, so I gave him a little nudge just to move him back where he belonged. It was a racing thing,” Miller described his last lap move as the two came out of turn two.

Bilderback wasn't to upset with the move, “We started burning off our right rear, we were getting real loose off of the corner,” Bilderback stated. “He got into me a little bit, but you know its racing.”

Bilderback wasn't mad at Miller either, “No, that's a racing move, everybody got to do it once in a while, so it's just friends.”

Bilderback took the lead on lap 19 when early leader Tyler Sauter got loose coming off of turn four, allowing Bilderback to get by him on the inside. At that time Miller worked his way to fourth after starting 12th.

With 12 laps to go, Miller got on the inside of Sauter for second and, a lap later, he would set his sites on Bilderback. Miller was on his bumper with five laps to go and the race was on to the finish.

Defending MIS track champion, Bobby Wilberg would come in third with second generation driver, Skylar Holzhausen finishing fourth.

Ross Kenseth finished fifth in his MIS debut under the watchful eye of his father, Matt.

A total of 43 Big 8 Series cars were on hand for a great early evening of racing.

The Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet will return to MIS on Tuesday, June 24th as part of The Swiss Colony All-Star Challenge event.
