Ross Kenseth Wins First Feature at MIS Haseleu, Kalbus, Ace and Wood Also Winners Friday, August 8, 2008 (Oregon, Wisconsin) Fifteen year old Ross Kenseth of Spring Valley, Illinois won his first-ever feature at Madison International Speedway tonight by winning the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models on JP Cullen and Sons Night. Other feature winners included Nathan Haseleu in the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models, Jay Kalbus in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Chester Ace in the Roto Rooter Bandits, and John Wood in the USST Super Trucks. Kenseth Captures the Checkered Flag Ross Kenseth became the youngest winner ever on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile when he won the JP Cullen and Sons 40 for the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models. Everyone who has seen Ross Kenseth race at MIS knew it was just a matter of time before he reached victory lane and tonight was the night. But it wouldn't come easily in this highly competitive field of talented drivers. From the start it appeared that it was going to be Brady Liddle's night as he started on the front row alongside fellow Oregon driver Nathan Oppliger. Liddle quickly moved to the front of the twenty-five car back and checked away from the field early. On lap 5 Andy Evraets was up to second followed by Kevin Knuese, Scott McGettigan, and Oppliger. By lap ten Liddle's lead had increased to ten car lengths over Evraets and it appeared that it was all smooth sailing for Liddle. Meanwhile, Kenseth had worked his way up from his thirteenth starting position to seventh by lap 19. The first caution of the race came out on lap 23 and negated the sizeable advantage Liddle had over the field. Liddle would continue to lead following the restart with Evraets, Scott McGettigan, Knuese, and Johnny Baumeister comprising the top five. On lap 28 the caution flag came out when the car of Chad Stevens made heavy contact with the wall going into turn three. Liddle would continue to lead after the restart with McGettigan up to second with a close battle for third taking place between Evraets and Baumeister. On lap 30 the two (Baumeister and Evraets) got together which also collected Knuese ending his night. Kenseth was able to avoid making heavy contact and somehow dodged the mishap with only minor damage. With Baumeister and Evraets going to the back of the field, Kenseth would move up to third followed by Ryan Goldade and fast qualifier Bobby Wilberg. The green flag would come out for just a short time as debris was on the track. When the race went green again Kenseth would power his way to the inside of McGettigan on lap 31 to take second place and turn his attention to Liddle. One lap later Kenseth would get by Liddle on the inside to take the lead and hold off the field for the win. A strong run by both Wilberg and Michael Bilderback would fall just short as Kenseth cruised to his first-ever feature win at MIS. Rounding out the top five behind Kenseth, Wiberg, and Bilderback were Goldade and Liddle. A very excited Kenseth climbed out of his battered and smoking Ford Fusion and received a large ovation from the crowd. As he checked out his car Kenseth said, I had something dragging the last eleven laps. I was really worried about the tire when I went around Baumeister. I want to thank everyone from Farm and Fleet, my parents, Joe from Pathfinder, we've had a great car all year. Wilberg set fast time 18.769 and Ryan Miles won the 12 lap qualifying race. Haseleu Best in Super Late Models Nathan Haseleu made it two wins in as many weeks as he picked up the checkered flag in the 40 lap feature for the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models. Fourteen cars took the green flag in the 40 lap feature for the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models. Kyle Kinder and Shane Morrissey brought the field to the green with Steve Rubeck splitting the difference to go side by side with Kinder for early supremacy. The caution flag waved early as the cars of cousins Shane and Andrew Morrissey got together going into turn three on the second lap. Both cars suffered heavy damage thus ending the night early for both drivers. Kinder and Rubeck would continue to battle it out side by side before Rubeck made an inside pass coming out of turn four on lap 6. By lap 10 Zack Riddle had moved up to second followed by Jacob Humphrey, Kinder, and Haseleu. Following a spin on lap 15, the caution flag came out on the restart resulting in Rubeck being sent to the rear of the field and moving Riddle to the lead followed by Haseleu, Humphrey, Bobby Wilberg, and Dave Feiler. Riddle's lead would be short-lived as Haseleu took to the inside coming out of turn 3 and flew by Riddle to take the lead. By lap 20 Wilberg was up to second but Haseleu was cruising. For a variety of mechanical reasons, several cars had dropped out of the field leaving only seven cars on the track at one point. On lap 32 Rubeck had moved back up to third, but neither Wilberg or Rubeck would have enough for Haseleu who picked up his second win in as many weeks. Things are going well for the team, said Haseleu who added to his points lead. Haseleu also set fast time with a lap of 17.626 for the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models. Kalbus Back in Victory Lane in Area Sportsman Jay Kalbus added to his points lead in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman by winning the 15 lap feature. Steve Dickson and TJ Goldade paced the six car field to the green flag with Dickson grabbing the early advantage. By lap 7 Kalbus was up to second before the caution flag came out for a spin on the backstretch. On lap 9 Kalbus moved to the outside of Dickson coming out of turn two to take the lead. Mike Heelein would get by Dickson for second and attempt to hunt down Kalbus but would come up short in his efforts as Kalbus raced to his fourth feature win of the season and ninth all-time at MIS. We're still trying to figure things out with our motor so we just did what we knew worked and it worked, said Kalbus from victory lane. Heelein set fast time for the division with a trip around Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile with a lap of 20.461 with Dickson winning the heat race. Bryden Motors Area Sportsman Feature:1. Fifth Trip to Victory Lane for Chester Ace Victory lane is the place for Chester Ace as he returned there for the fifth time in 2008 after winning the 20 lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits. Pat Richgels and Jody Schmidt made up the front row of the eight car feature, but it would be Kyle Padfield who would make the best early showing as he took the lead on lap 2. Padfield appeared to be on his way to his first feature win of his career at MIS as Ace was stuck in traffic running in fourth place. Ace made another of his creative moves on lap 14 when he went three wide coming out of turn four to quickly go from fourth to second. Out front Padfield would continue to lead but Ace was closing quickly. Padfield held the inside line while Ace looked to the outside. On lap 17 Padfield drifted up the track coming out of turn four allowing Ace enough room to motor by on the inside for the lead. Padfield was not about to give up, but his last lap shot at Ace came up just short. Following Ace and Padfield at the stripe were Cory Skolaski, Stephen Scheel, and Schmidt. For the fourth straight race Ace found himself in victory lane and said, It wasn't easy getting to the front. I really had to work for it. Cory Skolaski set fast time with a lap of 15.506 while Ace picked up the win in the heat race. Roto Rooter Bandits Feature:1. Chester Ace (Oregon, WI), 2. Kyle Padfield (Stoughton, WI), 3. John Wood Wins Kevin Fillner Memorial John Wood held off Gary Cerny to win the Kevin Fillner Memorial 40 for the USST Super Trucks in the series first appearance at MIS in 2008. Ten trucks answered the call for the Kevin Fillner Memorial 40, a race named in honor of the former MIS owner who died earlier this year. Steve Miller and Cole Howland took the green flag with Howland getting out to the lead. By lap 3 Wood was up to second followed by Tom Roney. On lap 5 Wood would move to the inside of Howland while going down the backstretch to take the lead with Roney right behind him. Three laps later a spinning truck on the frontstretch brought out the race's first caution flag. After the green flag waved again Roney would sprint past Wood for the lead and quickly build some distance between himself and the field. But Wood was not about to be denied. Roney's advantage over Wood and Gary Cerny would diminish with each lap and on lap 18 Wood would drop to the inside of Roney going into turn three and retake the lead. One lap later Cerny would pass Roney and take over second place. Now it became a battle between two former Midwest Truck Series veterans. The main question remaining was how would the two handle lapped traffic? Some exciting moments took place while the two weaved their way through the slower trucks, but Wood would be able to hold off Cerny for the win. Completing the top five were Roney, Collin Laursen, and Howland. An emotional Wood said from victory lane, This win means a lot to me. I knew Kevin for many, many years and to win this race means so much to me, said Wood. Jerry and Donna Fillner along with daughter Kim and family were on hand to present the trophy to Wood. Wood set fast time with a lap of 19.073. Heat wins went to Jeff Babb and Cerny. Two trucks were heavily damaged during practice and qualifying. The truck of Mike Tetzlaff made heavy contact with the wall in turn two during practice and Bobby Yonkee made heavy contact with the front stretch wall during qualifying. Both drivers were okay, but their trucks were done for the night. USST Super Trucks Feature:1. John Wood (Sun Prairie, WI), 2. Gary Cerny (Janesville, WI), 3. Tom Roney (Crystal Lake, IL), 4.
