Broughton, Kalbus, Ambrose, Padfield, Moyer, and Wood Find Victory Lane as MIS Finally Gets In Opening Night

By John Wells

Oregon, WI (Friday, May 22, 2009)- After back to back rainouts to open the season, Mother Nature cooperated tonight as six divisions came to Madison International Speedway eager to their seasons off on the right track.

Scott Broughton proved that he will be a force to reckon with in the Rockweiler Insulation Late Model division in 2009 as he won the 50 lap feature by holding off a talented field of drivers. Jay Kalbus, Todd Ambrose, Kyle Padfield, Aaron Moyer, and John Wood also won features in their respective divisions on opening night at MIS.

Broughton Takes Home the Checkered Flag in Late Model Feature

After racing at MIS on a limited basis in 2008 that still found him winning two feature events, Scott Broughton of Stoughton proved that he will be one of the drivers to watch in the 2009 Rockweiler Insulation Late Model points race.

Brady Liddle and Jason Hicks brought the field of twenty-six cars to the green flag. From the start it was all Liddle who quickly grabbed the lead followed by Hicks, Kevin Knuese, Shaun Scheel, and Ryan Goldade. Moving up quickly were Broughton and defending champion Bob Wilberg who were fifth and sixth respectively after lap 13 despite starting mid-pack.

It was smooth sailing for Liddle as the race stayed under green until lap 23 when the caution flag came out for a spin. Two more cautions would come on laps 24 and 27 with Liddle still able to hold off the field on the restart. On lap 31 Knuese would get by Hicks for second place with Broughton, Goldade, and Wilberg closely following. Two laps later Broughton would power his way into second before the caution flag would wave once again on lap 34. One of the best battles on the track at that point was between Jeremy Miller and Nathan Haseleu, who was filling in for Ross Kenseth as both had moved up into the top five.

Following the restart Liddle’s advantage began to disappear as Broughton pulled alongside him on lap 36 and made an inside pass on the backstretch to take the lead. One lap later Wilberg would move his way up to second followed by Miller and Haseleu. Miller overtook Wilberg on the next lap and set his sights on Broughton.

The final caution flag of the night would come out on lap 45 for an accident on the backstretch thus setting up one of those classic MIS features. It would be a great restart for Broughton who was able to hold off Miller and Haseleu for the win and take his car to the Rick’s Lawn and Garden Victory Lane.

“We’re glad to be back here this season. These guys are really tough here so this is a big win. Our car was great,” said Broughton.

Miller set fast time with a lap at 18.636 with Vern Fagerberg Jr., Knuese, and Hicks winning heat races.

The Rockstar Rules in Area Sportsman

Defending champion Jay “The Rockstar” Kalbus of Watertown held off a field of nine Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman to win the 15 lap feature.

Rookie Stephen Scheel and his El Camino led the field to the green flag with Kurt Kleven quickly up to challenge Scheel for the lead. On lap 3 Kleven would prove to be too much for Scheel as he took over the lead with Kalbus up to second place. The caution flag came out for fluid on the track with Kleven making a quick exit to the pits and relinquishing his lead.

This moved Kalbus into the lead followed by Bob Wilberg as the two would battle it out for the rest of the way with Kalbus taking the win. TJ Goldade, Kleven, and Scheel would finish in the top five.

“Bobby was tough tonight. I never got him out of my mirror. This was a great win to start the season,” said Kalbus when asked about holding off the multi-time track champion.

Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 20.127 while Goldade won the heat race.

Ambrose Runs Away from Hobby Stock Field

After setting a new track record in qualifying, Todd Ambrose of Prairie du Sac proved to be too much for the eleven car Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stock field as he won the 15 lap feature.

Dustin Lean and Mike Maurer brought the field to the green flag with Maurer taking the early lead before the caution flag sent cars running for cover on the backstretch and ending Maurer’s night early. This moved Terry Ciano Jr. into the lead followed by Bobby Selsing Jr., Don Fassett, Lean, and Ambrose.

Ciano was running strong and was able to hold off the field until lap 8 when Ambrose worked his way up to second and passed Ciano Jr. for the lead coming out of turn two. Ambrose quickly checked away from the field with a great battle taking place behind him for second.

In the end Ciano Jr. was able to hold off Fassett, Selsing Jr. and Ken Au to take second place with Ambrose safely out in front for his trip to victory lane.

“This is great to be back here at MIS,” said Ambrose, the former super late model driver and past Sportsman champion. “We’re looking forward to being here this year.” Ambrose will be sharing driving duties with Brad Luck as the two compete for a team championship. Long-time MIS employee Evie Handeland presented the trophy on her 85th birthday.

Ambrose record-setting lap was 21.828 with Selsing Jr. winning the heat race.

Victory is Sweet for Padfield in the Bandits

Kyle Padfield of Janesville came very close to winning a feature last season. Unfortunately for several weeks in a row he came up just short finishing in the runner-up position. But that all changed tonight as he picked up his first-ever feature race at MIS by besting a twelve car field in the Roto Rooter Bandits in their 20 lap main event on the “Ring of Fire.”

Levi Cloute and Teresa Verburgt led the field of four cylinders to the green flag with Cloute taking the early lead before being overtaken by Brandon Skolaski. Cory Skolaski was quickly up to challenge his brother for the lead before the two made contact on lap 4 bringing out the caution flag. This would move Padfield into the top spot followed by Jody Schmidt and Chester Ace.

The second caution came out on lap 12 for a spin just as Pat Richgels had passed Ace for third place. Padfield would maintain his advantage following the restart with Schmidt and Richgels racing side by side for second. The final caution came out on lap 15 for a spin setting a five lap shootout.

Padfield would continue to hold the lead with Schmidt, Richgels, Cory Skolaski, and Ace fighting it out behind him. In the end it would be Padfiled holding off the field for the win with Skolaski edging Schmidt for second at the stripe followed by Richgels and Ace.

When asked about his win Padfield said, “This is great. All of the hard work paid off and I want to thank everyone who’s helped me out.”

Ace set fast time with a lap of 15.872 with Brandon Skolaski and Schmidt taking top honors in the heat races.

Moyer Edges McNamara in Legends Thriller

Aaron Moyer of Eden picked up his first-ever feature win at MIS in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends by getting by defending champion Max McNamara on the final lap.

Brandon Heisler and Tim Narr comprised the front row of the six car field with Narr holding the lead for the first three laps before McNamara would get by on the low side coming out of turn one with Moyer closely behind him.

On lap 9 the caution flag would come out when Moyer and Dave Wastak made contact coming out of turn three. Moyer would waste no time getting back to the front and was up to second by lap 13 when the caution flag came out again.

By lap 18 Moyer had closed the gap with McNamara and was up to challenge for the top spot. Moyer worked his way to the outside waiting for the right opportunity and found it on the final lap as he passed McNamara on the outside while coming out of turn four and won the race to the finish line.

“I thought I saw Max was getting a little loose so I wanted to take advantage of it,” said Moyer in a post race interview describing his last lap pass of McNamara.

John Wood Returns to Victory Lane in USST Feature

John Wood of Sun Prairie is no stranger to Madison International Speedway and he proved it tonight as he returned to victory lane by winning the 20 lap feature for the USST Super Trucks and picked up a clean sweep.

Butch Mierendorf and Todd Lockington led the field of six trucks to the green flag with Mierendorf taking the early lead before Jerry Wood would overtake him on the inside while coming out of turn two.

Wood, the former super late model driver, who maintain the lead until lap five when his brother John would take over the lead with an outside pass on the front stretch.

One lap later Gary Cerny would be able to get by Jerry Wood for second and focus his attention on tracking down John Wood. With Wood comfortably out in front, Cerny was doing everything he could to close the gap but in the end Wood would prove to be too strong. Following Wood and Cerny were Mierendorf, Lockington, and Tom Collins.

“Boy, that 5 truck was coming fast,” said Wood from victory lane. “It was fun.”
