Stevens Captures the Late Model Flag at MIS

Kalbus, Ace and McNamara Win for the Second Time, Knaus Picks Up First Feature Win

By John Wells

Oregon, WI (Friday, June 5, 2009)- Chad Stevens held off a hard-charging field of cars to win the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models on Pepsi Night at Madison International Speedway. Once again the fans were treated to perfect weather and exciting racingÉan unbeatable combination.

Jay Kalbus (Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman), Chester Ace (Roto Rooter Bandits), and Max McNamara (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) returned to victory lane for a second time in 2009 while Chad Knaus led wire to wire for his first-ever MIS victory in the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks.

Stevens Takes the Checkered Flag in Late Models

Chad Stevens earned his first feature win in 2009 by holding off a field of twenty-two cars in the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.

Shaun Scheel and Zack Riddle had the honors of leading the talented field of Rockweiler Insulation Late Models to the green flag. Scheel would gain the early supremacy and would lead the first ten circuits with Riddle in hot pursuit. Back to back caution flags would come out for a spin on lap 10 and one on the restart.

On the next restart Riddle wasted no time and passed Scheel on the inside coming out of turn two. Behind the leaders were Ryan Goldade, Ross Kenseth, and Stevens who were ready to challenge for the lead.

Kenseth moved into second place on lap 14 followed by Goldade, Stevens, and Jesse Saunders. The caution flag would come out on lap 22 for a spin while Riddle and Kenseth and put some distance between themselves and the field.

Riddle and Kenseth would battle it out for the lead until lap 35 when the two made contact in turn four bringing out the caution and sending both cars to the rear of the field. This moved Stevens into the lead followed by Goldade, Bob Wilberg, John Baumeister Jr., and Dave Feiler.

Stevens and Goldade would soon be side by side for the lead on lap 37 with Goldade taking the lead briefly on lap 38 before relinquishing the top spot back to Stevens. A spin in turn three would bring out another caution flag and appeared to set up another typical exciting MIS finish.

On the restart Goldade’s car would make contact with the front stretch wall with both right side tires getting off the ground briefly and waving off the green flag. Goldade would be able to continue with no problems, but Stevens had the most in the end to pick up his first win of the season. Baumeister Jr. would take over second from Goldade at the end with Feiler finishing fourth and Wilberg fifth.

“We might not have had the fastest car but we held them off at the end,” said Stevens from victory lane. “It was kind of being in the right place at the right time for us. I got where I had to be and held them off.”

Heat races were won by Rebecca Kasten, John Ovadal Jr., and Zack Riddle. The 15 lap Last Chance race was won by Tyler Kelley, his first win in a late model. Fast qualifier was John Baumeister Jr. with a lap of 18.864.

Kalbus Rocks and Rolls to Area Sportsman Victory

Defending track champion Jay Kalbus won for the second time in three tries in 2009 by topping a very competitive field of Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman in their 20 lap feature.

A great field of thirteen Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman took the green flag led by Don Wickstrum and Stephen Scheel. Scheel and his El Camino would vault to the lead with Wickstrum close behind. On lap 7 Kurt Kleven would get by Wickstrum before second only to see the caution flag come out for a spin in turn four. This would also negate the large lead that Scheel had built over the field.

Scheel would continue to lead with Kleven officially up to second after the restart followed by John Handeland, Wickstrum, and Kalbus. The caution came out again for a spin and before the restart Bob Wilberg would lose power and be forced to the pits.

On lap 10 Kleven was up for the challenge as he battled side by side with Scheel for the lead before Scheel would spin on the backstretch and sending Kleven to the front and Kalbus up to second.

Following the green flag, Kleven would continue his lead until Kalbus motored by him coming out of turn two on lap 14. One more caution flag would come out on lap 17, but a great restart by Kalbus assured his return to victory lane. Kleven would be able to hold off last week’s feature winner Bret Schmidt for second with Ryan Goldade in the Team Goldade car and Steve Dickson rounding out the top five.

“I didn’t want anybody right behind me going into turn one,” said Jay Kalbus from the Rick’s Lawn and Garden Center Victory lane when asked about the restart on lap 17. “This is a great field of drivers and it’s a lot of fun out there.”

Stephen Scheel and Bret Schmidt won the heat races and Kalbus set fast time with a lap of 20.326.

Knaus Holds Off the Field in the Hobby Stocks

In only his third night out in a Hobby Stock, Chad Knaus led from start to finish to win the 15 lap feature for the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks in what proved to be another exciting race for the division on Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile.

It was destined to be a great feature race again as the Hobby Stocks have adjusted well to the half-mile. Knaus and Rodger Stephenson comprised the front row of the seven car field with Knaus getting out to a sizeable lead early on with tight battles behind him.

Brad Luck, driving the Ambrose / Luck team car, would move into third on lap 3 followed closely by Terry Ciano Jr. However, Knaus was continuing to build his lead and appeared like he was ready to run away from the field.

With each lap the distance between Knaus and Luck diminished little by little. On lap 13 it appeared that Luck had an answer for Knaus but got loose coming out of turn two allowing Knaus to keep a three car length advantage.

But Luck wasn’t done as he closed the gap quickly, but he wouldn’t have enough time as Knaus led start to finish to pick up his victory. Following Knaus and Luck in the top five were Ciano Jr., Ken Au, and last week’s feature winner Bobby Selsing Jr.

“This is great. It’s hard to believe we were able to get it done,” said Knaus, who has only been behind the wheel of his Hobby Stock three times.

The heat race was won by Brad Luck while Don Fassett set quick time with a lap of 22.116.

Another Ace for Chester

Chester Ace worked his way through an action-packed 20 lap feature to win for the second straight week in the Roto Rooter Bandits.

Jovanni DiMaggio and Lee Haag brought the field of thirteen cars to the green flag in what would prove to another exciting Bandit feature.

The caution flag came out early- very early for a spin on the first lap. When the green flag waved again Haag would battle his way to the front closely followed by John Beale. A flat tire for DiMaggio would bring out the caution on lap 3 and send him to the pits for a tire change.

Haag would continue to run out front with Ace quickly up to fourth and by lap 6 the defending champion would speed by Jody Schmidt for third. Ace would fight it out with Beale for second as the two raced side by side before Ace moved into second on lap 10.

Now it was time for Ace to go after the leader. On lap 11 Ace would find room to the inside of Haag while coming out of turn one to take over the top spot. A couple more cautions would have no effect on Ace as a great battle for second place was going on behind him betweem Beale and Kyle Padfield. In his first race at MIS, Beale would be able to fend off Padfield to take second but wouldn’t have enough for Ace. Following Ace, Beale, and Padfield in the top five would be Haag and Pat Richgels.

Cory Skolaski set fast time with a trip around the “Ring of Fire” in a time of 15.570 with heat wins going to Jon Coker, his first-ever at MIS, and Ace.

McNamara Masters the Legends

Mad Max McNamara raced his way to the front and held off the field of nine cars to win the 20 lap feature event for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

Two drivers out for the first time in 2009, Adam Rawski and Hermann Greinig, led the field to the green flag. Greining would hold the point for the first two circuits before McNamara would power by him at the stripe on lap 3. McNamara quickly put some space between himself and the “Hermannator” before the caution flag waved on lap 5.

Greinig would hold down the second position following the restart before Aaron Moyer passed him up on lap 8. The caution came out for a second time on lap 10 for another spin, but the resulting restart was good for McNamara has he maintained his lead over Moyer.

The only question that remained is whether or not Moyer would have enough time to catch the leader or benefit from a third caution flag. Neither one would happen on this night as McNamara was just too quick to catch. Greinig would hold off Tom Palma for third with Brandon Heisler finishing in fifth.

Aaron Moyer eclipsed the fourteen second mark with a lap of 13.998 to set fast time with McNamara victorious in the heat race.
