| Bilderback Edges Miler in Late Model Feature Kalbus, Selsing Jr., Ace, and McNamara Back in Victory Lane By John Wells Once again the fans at Madison International Speedway were treated to an exciting night of very competitive racing in all five weekly divisions. When the night was over it would be Michael Bilderback, Jay Kalbus, Bobby Selsing Jr., Chester Ace, and Max McNamara who would be feature winners. This Time Its Michael Bilderback Close races between Michael Bilderback and Jeremy Miller are nothing new at MIS as Miller outdistanced Bilderback in the May 2008 Big 8 race on Wisconsins Fastest Half Mile. But tonight Bilderback said no more as he held off Miller to win the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models. Jason Hicks and Rich Schumann Jr. had the honors of leading this talented field to the green flag. Hicks jumped out to the early lead with Ryan Goldade and Bilderback up to second and third after one lap. Appearing like he was ready to check away from the field, Hicks looked very strong in the lead followed by Goldade, Bilderback, Zack Riddle, and Scott Broughton. On lap 12 Bilderback would maneuver his way around Goldade for second and by lap 15 had closed the gap between himself and Hicks. With good races all over the track, Hicks would do his best to keep the lead over this hard-charging group. On lap 22 Bilderback would look to the inside of Hicks going into turn three with Goldade having similar ideas. Closely following this trio were Riddle and Miller, who was up to third. Hicks would continue to lead before the caution flag came out on lap 26 when Goldade spun on the lowside coming out of turn one. Bilderback would continue to apply the pressure to Hicks after the restart, biding his time for the perfect opportunity. His chace would come on lap 27 as he moved to the inside of Hicks coming down the backstretch before finding room on the inside going into turn three and making the pass for the lead coming out of turn four. Hicks would get off pace slightly on lap 29 allowing Bilderback to increase his lead with Riddle and Miller racing for second. Miller would get by Riddle for second on lap 31 and begin cutting into Bilderbacks lead. Bilderback and Miller put some ground between themselves and third place with all of the ingredients in place for another close finish. On lap 37 Miller was looking for any way to get by Bilderback. Inside. Outside. Not quite enough. Finally while coming out of turn four and running the outside groove, Miller inched his way past the leader only to realize that the caution flag had come out for a spin back in the field. Still the leader, Bilderback would pace the field back to the green but the restart would be waved off when Broughton and John Baumeister Jr. got together while coming out of turn four to take the green. When the race went green again it would be Miller trying to get to the outside of Bilderback for the lead, but he would be unsuccessful and have to settle for second place on this night. Rounding out the top five were Riddle, Feiler, and Bob Wilberg. Miller set fast time for the third night in 2009 with a lap of 18.773. Heat race wins went to Mike Storkson, AJ Henricksen, and Ty Reedy. The Last Chance race was won by Brady Liddle. After four weeks of racing, there have been no repeat winners in the twelve heat races, two Last Chance races, nor four features. Miller is the divison points leader with a 317-295 lead over Wilberg. The twelve car field was led to the green flag by RC Van Ransull and Stephen Scheel with Scheel getting out front from the start followed by Kurt Kleven. Scheel would maintain his lead with fast qualifier Bob Wilberg taking the second spot from Kleven on lap 3. With Wilberg closing quickly, Scheel would relinquish his lead on lap 6 when Wilberg built momentum coming out of turn four to make the pass on the outside in front of the grandstand. On lap 7 Kalbus and Bret Schmidt would overtake Scheel and move into second and third behind Wilberg who was looking to pick up his first-ever Area Sportsman feature win. Wilberg continued to lead the way, but Kalbus wasnt about to go away quietly. On lap 14 Kalbus found room to the inside of Wilberg coming out of turn two and made the pass for the lead. Schmidt would get by Wilberg on lap 15 for second place, but this race belonged to the Rockstar who took the Big Green Machine to victory lane. Schmidt would hold off Wilberg for second with Scheel and Kleven completing the top five. If you look at the car you can see it was a tough one. Trying to get around Bret and Bobby wasnt easy. This division is a lot of fun. Weve got a lot of new guys and its very competitive out there, said Kalbus in a post race interview. Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 20.336. Heat winners were John Handeland and Schmidt. Kalbus leads the point standings after four races with a 367-308 lead over Wilberg. Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman 20 Lap Feature:1. Rodger Stephenson and Selsing Jr. had the honors of bringing the nine car field to the green flag with the caution coming out on the first lap and bringing a restart. Selsing Jr. would take the lead on the restart over Stephenson with Brad Luck up to second on lap 3 followed by Don Fassett. Luck looked to be up to the challenge as he tried to go outside to pass Selsing Jr. on lap 6 only to come up short. Closely watching the battle up front was Fassett who was only a car length behind the leaders. Selsing Jr. would continue to pace the field with Fassett moving by Luck on lap 11 for second place. A great race was also taking place behind the top three with Chad Knaus, Stephenson, Terry Ciano Jr., and Ken Au racing for fourth place. Fassett wouldnt quite have enough for Selsing Jr. as the Batboy would take his car to victory lane and entertain the crowd with his victory salute. Behind Selsing Jr. and Fassett in the top five would be Luck, Knaus, and Stephenson. I just got out there and ran as hard as I good to try to get a jump on these guys. The good thing is it stayed caution free and I could stay out front and run my line as go as fast as I could. I think this division puts on a great show. Its a very competitive class, said Selsing Jr. who noted that his car is Éas old as he is. Establishing fast time was Fassett with a lap of 22.038 with the heat race win going to Luck. The point lead in the division belongs to Team Ambrose / Luck with a 349-317 lead over Selsing Jr. with Fassett in third at 316 points. Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks 15 Lap Feature:1. But before that he had business to conduct at MIS and he accomplished his goal by winning the 20 lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits. A thirteen car field was brought to the green flag on the Ring of Fire by Jovanni DiMaggio and Pat Richgels. The green flag wouldnt stay out very long as Richgels would take the lead before Jody Schmidt made contact with the front stretch wall on lap 2. Richgels, who won the heat race earlier in the night, would continue to lead once the green flag waved again before the flag changed colors to yellow on lap 4 when the cars of DiMaggio and Lee Haag made contact going into turn one. This moved Jesse Ayers and Ace up to second and third respectively. The lead for Richgels would only last one more lap before Ace made his move to the inside coming out of turn four and took the lead at the start / finish line. With room to race, Ace quickly built a large lead over the field. The action behind the leader was hot as the Skolaski brothers battled it out for second place with Cory eventually taking the spot from Brandon. Kyle Padfield would pass Brandon for third and set his sights on Cory. Not only were Cory Skolaski and Padfield putting on a good show racing for second, they were also slowly cutting into Aces advantage. On lap 18 the caution flag would come out for a stalled car on the front stretch and negating Aces lead. It would be no problem for Ace on the restart as he quickly put some room between himself and Cory Skolaski and cruised to his third win of the 2009 season. Skolaski would hold off Padfield for second with Ayers and Schmidt rounding out the top five. Ace summed up his night this way: I started in the back which wasnt fun. I had to avoid the wrecks ahead of me and drove on the outside while the tires were cold and stick. The rest was pretty much up to me. Patience pays off in this division and it worked for me tonight. Victories in the heat races went to Richgels and Padfield. Ace set fast time with a lap of 15.500. Ace has a 356-298 lead over Schmidt in the point standings. Roto Rooter Bandits 20 Lap Feature:1. Tommy Jones and Hermann Greinig comprised the front row for the 20 lap feature event. Showing a quick burst of speed, Jones would vault out to the early advantage with Greinig a distant second. On lap 5 McNamara and Aaron Moyer would get by Greinig for second and third before the caution flag came out for a spin. Jones would lead for two more laps before McNamara and Moyer powered by on the inside coming out of turn four. From that point it became a two car battle for the win with McNamara having the advantage. Unfortunately for Moyer, twenty laps wouldnt be enough time as McNamara would hold on for the win and a trip to the Ricks Lawn and Garden Center Victory Lane. Jones would finish third followed by Greinig and Andy Jones. The race was great. Aaron was closing all the time and the car was starting to tighten up. Its been looking good for us this season. This is three in a row at Madison plus weve one two in a row at Grundy, said McNamara. McNamara tied his own track record in qualifying with a lap of 13.913 and also won the heat race. McNamara leads Moyer 378-363 in the points race. Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends 20 Lap Feature:1. Max McNamara (Ingleside, IL), 2. Aaron Moyer (Eden, WI), 3. Tommy Jones (Gurnee, IL), 4. Dave Wastak (Milwaukee, WI) Much to the delight of the crowd, a pack of small cars defeated the little red bus driven by Gary Oscarson and co-pilot Brian Beebe in the six lap Daves Famous Gauntlet Race. Seven vehicles did their best at trying to prevent the bus from making six laps around the Ring of Fire and they were successful when the bus stalled on the front stretch after taking heavy contact in what looked like a demo derby at times. Racing returns to Madison International Speedway on Friday, June 19th for Tech Enterprises Night with action in all five weekly divisions. Pit gates open at 3:30 with practice at 4:45, qualifying at 6:15, and racing at 7:30. | | |
