Zack Riddle Wins Construction Labor Management 40

Kalbus, Ciano Jr., Padfield and McNamara Also Victorious

By John Wells

Zack Riddle held off a strong field of Rockweiler Insulation Late Models to win the Construction Labor Management 40 at Madison International Speedway on Friday night. Four other drivers also took their cars to victory lane with Jay Kalbus (Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman), Terry Ciano Jr. (Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks), Kyle Padfield (Roto Rooter Bandits), and Max McNamara (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) earning wins.

A great crowd, perfect weather, and an outstanding field of cars all added up to another great racing experience for the fans on Construction Labor Management Night at MIS.

There's No Denying Riddle Tonight

Zack Riddle has been close. He's been the leader in two races this season only to have disaster strike while he was running out front. But tonight there was no denying Riddle as he won the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.

Twenty-two cars came to the green flag led by Chad Stevens and defending division champion Bob Wilberg. Stevens would get the early lead with Riddle moving past Wilberg for second place followed by Dave Feiler and Jeremy Miller.

On lap 5 Miller would move into the top five when he powered by Wilberg. Staying under an extended period of green flag racing, Stevens would continue to maintain his lead over the field with Riddle right there in second place.

On lap 20 Ross Kenseth would join the top five but it was still the Stevens-Riddle show out front. Biding his time and waiting for the right opportunity, Riddle was unable to get by Stevens .

On lap 32 the car of Kyle Shear made heavy contact with the front stretch wall bringing out the caution flag. Shear's car was damaged but he was ok.

Stevens would continue to lead following the restart with Riddle beginning to realize that the number of laps was winding down. On lap 36 he saw what he was looking for and dropped down to the inside of Stevens going into turn three and cleared him for the lead coming out of turn four.

Miller and Feiler would make their way past Stevens and move up to challenge Riddle for the lead. But there was no denying Riddle tonight as he led the rest of the way to pick up his first win in the Late Model division. Miler would finish second followed by Feiler, Kenseth, and Wilberg.

Completing the top ten were Stevens, Ryan Goldade, Brady Liddle, John Ovadal Jr., and Nathan Oppliger.

“We really had to work for this one but we got it. There were some really fast cars behind me especially Jeremy whose always tough. It feels like this should be our third win of the year but it's our first and we hope there will be more coming in 2009,” said Riddle in a post race interview with Eric Huenefeld.

Miller set fast time for the fourth time in 2009 with a lap of 18.888. Brad Becker won his first-ever race at MIS in the heats with Dann Barber and Ty Reedy also taking home wins. Michael Bachaus won the fifteen lap last chance race.

Jay Kalbus Does It Again

Three in a row and win number four on the season were the rewards for Jay Kalbus after winning the 20 lap feature for the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman.

John Handeland and Don Wickstrum brought the twelve car field to the green flag with Handeland taking the early lead. His lead would last until lap 3 when rookie Stephen Scheel pulled alongside and would eventually take the point after passing Handeland on the inside coming out of turn two and down the backstretch on lap 4.

Charging up through the field were Kalbus and Ryan Goldade who were quickly up to second and third by lap 5. With Kalbus applying a lot of pressure, Scheel would eventually get loose and slide up the track somehow keeping control of his car but not the lead as Kalbus got what he was looking for and took the lead.

“That was pretty interesting,” said Kalbus from victory lane. “We could've both spun which probably would have sent us both the back.”

From this point on the race belonged to Kalbus with Goldade doing everything he could to close the gap. Goldade desperately needed a caution flag to come but tonight it would not be the case as the race stayed green and Kalbus took home the checkered flag.

Goldade would finish second followed by Kurt Kleven, Scheel, and Michael Heelein.

“This was a rough night for us. It looked a lot easier than it was. We had a lot of problems with the car earlier on in the night,” said Kalbus.

Bob Wilberg, who was unable to start the feature, set fast time with a lap of 20.328. Heat race wins went to RC Van Ransull and Kalbus.

Terry Ciano Jr. Tops the Hobby Stocks

Terry Ciano Jr. picked up his first-ever feature win at MIS by topping the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks in their 15 lap feature. Ciano Jr. becomes the fourth different feature winners in five races this season in the division.

Ken Au and Ciano Jr. led this small but talented field to the green flag with the green machine of Ciano Jr. jumping out to the early lead. He quickly built a solid lead over the field with point leader Todd Ambrose up to second on lap 4.

The only question at this point was would Ciano Jr. be able to hold off the always quick car of Ambrose. It became an exciting battle as the gap closed with each lap and by lap 9 Ambrose was right on the rear bumper of the leader.

Looking to the insideÉlooking to the outsideÉAmbrose would be unable to find the room he needed to get by Ciano Jr. who lead wire to wire to collect the checkered flag. Rounding out the top five were Don Fassett, Bobby Selsing Jr., and Au.

Following a smoky burnout in front of a very appreciative crowd, Ciano Jr. had this to say: “This is so great. It's by far my biggest win in my three years. This is just amazing. It's a fast track and it's a lot of fun out there. I knew Ambrose was coming and I did what I had to do.”

Fassett set fast time with a lap of 22.184 and Ciano Jr. picked up another checkered flag in the heat race.

Kyle Padfield Wins Bandit Battle

It was a battle, but in the end it was Kyle Padfield who would hang on to win his second feature of the season in the 20 lap event for the Roto Rooter Bandits.

A nineteen car field of Bandits filled the “Ring of Fire” with door to door action as Brandon Skolaski and Pat Richgels having the honors of leading the field to the green. Richgels would take the point from the start, but it would be Mike Storkson, who was making his 2009 Bandit debut, who would charge his way to the front to challenge Richgels.

On lap 6 the first caution flag of the race would come out for a spin. Following the restart, Storkson would get to the inside of Richgels coming out of turn four on lap 8 to take the lead. It looked at this point that Storkson, a past Hobby Stock champion on the quarter mile, might be returning to victory lane.

But this is the Bandits and anything can happen and it did. The caution flag waved again on lap 12 when fast qualifier Cory Skolaski lost a wheel. When the green came out again it would be Storkson still running out front with Jody Schmidt, Lee Haag, Chester Ace, and Kyle Padfield in tow.

Things really got wild on lap 14 as Schmidt made the save of the night as his car got sideways coming out of one and stayed that way through turn two. This allowed Ace and Padfield to sneak through and move to the front. On lap 15 Padfield would work his way to the lowside of the track and take the lead from Ace coming out of turn two.

From this point it would be all Padfield as he would lead all the way to the Rick's Lawn and Garden victory lane with his second win of the 2009 season. Ace, Schmidt, Haag, and Tytus Helgestad, who was making his 2009 MIS debut, would round out the top five.

“It was a wild ride. At one point I think we were four or five wide. I'm not sure how we did but we came up with the win. It was enjoyable and I hope we can get a few more wins this year too,” said Padfield.

Cory Skolaksi led the way in qualifying with a lap of 15.595. Heat race winners were Helgestad, Rory Padfield, and Schmidt.

McNamara Masters the Legends

Max McNamara is tough. Even with competition coming from four states he was able to hold off the fourteen car field and earn his fourth feature win of the season in the 25 lap main event for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

First-time MIS driver Daniel Ivaska and Brandon Heilser paced the fourteen car field to the checkered flag. Ivaska, who earlier won a heat race, grabbed the early advantage with Hermann Greinig up to second followed by McNamara. McNamara would get by Greinig one lap later and set his focus on the leader.

By lap six Ivaska and McNamara were side by side with Mad Max eventually making the pass at the stripe on lap seven. The caution flag would come out one lap later for a spin.

McNamara would get a great jump on the field on the restart with Jimmy Hansen, one of last year's MIS Fall Classic winners, quickly up to third. On lap 10 Hansen would take over second from Ivaska with Aaron Moyer up to third by lap 14.

As McNamara has proven so well this year, he had no problem working his way through lapped traffic with Hansen doing everything in his power to keep up with the leader. Unfortunately for Hansen the twenty-five lap distance for the feature wouldn't be enough as he could not catch McNamara tonight and would have to settle for second place. Moyer would finish third followed by Ivaska and Greinig.

“I went up on the high side and didn't think it would stick but it did,” said McNamara. “I really like the bigger field (fourteen cars) because it adds a lot of good competition to our division.”

McNamara set fast time with a lap of 14.236 with heat wins going to Ivaska and McNamara.
