Kenseth Edges Wilberg in Late Model Excitement at MIS

Kleven, Fassett, Padfield, and McNamara Also Winners.

By John Wells

Friday, July 17, 2009 (Oregon, WI)- Ross Kenseth held off Bob Wilberg to win the 40-lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models at Madison International Speedway on Coors Light / Pomps Tire Night. Although the temperature was cool the excitement on the track was hot as the fans were on their feet to watch Kenseth and Wilberg battle back and forth.

Kurt Kleven (Brown's Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman), Don Fassett (Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks), Kyle Padfield (Roto Rooter Bandits), and Max McNamara (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) also won features.

A Classic Late Model Battle Goes to Kenseth

If you like side by side battles for the lead this race had all that and more as Ross Kenseth held off Bob Wilberg in the end to win the 40-lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.

The twenty-five car field was ushered to the green flag by Ryan Miles, who was making his 2009 debut at MIS and Chad Stevens. Miles took the lead before the first caution of the race came out on lap 2 for a spin.

Miles would maintain his lead followed by Brady Liddle, Wilberg, Kenseth, and Zack Riddle. Kenseth would move by Wilberg on lap 5 into the third position before the yellow flag waved again.

Shortly after the restart Kenseth not only vaulted by Liddle for second but went right on by Miles as well to take the lead. Not to be outdone, Wilberg kept pace with Kenseth and moved into second.

Kenseth would put some real estate between himself and Wilberg but never enough to get too comfortable. By lap 27 Wilberg was prepared to make his move for the lead and got inside of Kenseth coming out of turn four to take over the point. A spin on lap 28 brought out yet another caution flag and tightened up the field.

Kenseth and Wilberg would battle it out side by side once the race resumed with Ryan Goldade up to challenge followed by Riddle and Stevens. Wilberg would maintain the lead until the caution came out again on lap 33 for a spin.

After a great restart, Wilberg put some room between himself and Kenseth. But Kenseth wasn't done. On lap 37 he was side by side with the leader and eventually took over the top spot when he dropped to the inside and got by Wilberg coming out of turn three.

From this point it would be all Kenseth who was able to hold off Wilberg to pick up his first feature win in the division in 2009. Goldade would finish third followed by Riddle and Stevens.

“We made a lot of changes to the car after the heat race. It was a lot of fun racing with Bobby Wilberg like that. This was one of my best races I've ever had here at MIS,” said Kenseth.

“We just raced side by side out there. We weren't giving anyone anything we just raced really hard. It was a lot of fun,” said Wilberg.

Miller set fast time with a lap of 18.656 with heat wins going to Vern Fagerberg Jr., John Ovadal Jr., and Kenseth.

First Feature Win for Kleven in Area Sportsman

Kurt Kleven took the lead on the second lap and held off a hard-charging Jay Kalbus to win the 20-lap feature for the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman.

Rick Coppernoll and Kleven led the field of fourteen Area Sportsman cars to the green flag with Coppernoll taking a slight lead before surrendering it to Kleven on the second lap.

From their Kleven was able to put some distance between himself and the field. On lap 5, speedy Don Wickstrum had moved past Coppernoll for second with Bret Schmidt and Kalbus jumping into the top five. Schmidt would eventually get by Wickstrum for second with Kleven still running strong out front.

Wickstrum would regain the second position on lap 12 before Kalbus would move past him five laps later and take aim on Kleven. But there would be no denying the rookie Kleven tonight as he would be able to keep the defending champion Kalbus at bay and take home the checkered flag.

Rounding out the top five behind Kleven and Kalbus were Schmidt, Bob Wilberg, and Michael Heelein.

“My goal this year was to maybe win a feature. This is was my first feature win ever,” said Kleven. “I was happy we were able to get it done.”

Fast time honors went to Kalbus with a lap of 20.241 with Kleven and Tory Bagley getting the heat wins.

Padfield Finds His Way to Victory Lane

Kyle Padfield made it two in a row as he won the caution free 20-lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits by adeptly working his way through traffic.

Fifteen cars took the green flag for the feature event for the Bandits with Jon Coker and Jovanni DiMaggio leading the way. Coker would take the lead from the start before Lee Haag would get by him on lap 3.

Haag's lead would be short-lived as Padfield snuck by on the inside while coming out of turn four to take command of the race on lap 5 closely followed by point leader and defending champion Chester Ace.

On lap 7 Jody Schmidt moved past Ace and into the second position and tried to dial in the leader. It didn't take long for Padfield to catch the tail end of the field as he calmly worked his way inside and outside of lapped traffic keeping Schmidt in his rear view mirror the entire time.

Despite the best of efforts from Schmidt, Padfield would keep his car out front and lead the rest of the way to pick up win number three in 2009. Schmidt would finish second followed by Ace, Haag, and Coker.

From victory lane Padfield said, “That was wild. I really had to work my way through lapped traffic and was glad to be there where I needed to be in the end.”

Cory Skolaski set fast time with a trip around the Ring of Fire in 15.408 seconds while Ace and Rory Padfield took the wins in the heat races.

Fassett Fastest in Hobby Stocks

Don Fassett has set fast time on four nights in 2009 but had yet to win a feature for the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks. But that all changed tonight when he took home the checkered flag in the 15-lap feature.

Chad Knaus and Todd Ambrose paced the field to the green flag with Ambrose getting out to the lead from the start. However, Fassett was not about to let Ambrose steal the show as he quickly moved up to second and by lap 7 was side by side with Ambrose for the lead. One lap later Fassett would clear Ambrose and take over the top spot.

From this point it was a two car race despite a great effort from Greg Pruitt who tried to catch the leaders. But despite the heavy pressure it would be Fassett holding off Ambrose for the victory.

“We really wanted this one. We've been fast and this feels great,” said Fassett.

Fassett took fast time with a lap of while Ambrose won the heat.

Last Lap Victory for McNamara

Max McNamara won his fifth feature of the 2009 season at MIS, but he couldn't have waited much longer to do it as he got by a spinning Aaron Moyer coming out of turn four on the final lap to earn his trip to victory lane.

The field of ten came to the green led by Dave Wastak and Cullen Camasta with Camasta out to an early lead before the caution flag waved on lap 2 for a spin.

On the restart both Moyer and McNamara would fly by Camasta for the lead. Despite a cauton on lap 3 for a spin, Moyer continued to hold down the top position with McNamara in pursuit.

On lap 14, McNamara would find his way past Moyer on the inside on the back shoot before Moyer would regain the lead on lap 18. When the white flag waved Moyer was still in the lead and appeared to be on his way to victory lane before spinning in the final turn to allow McNamara to get by for the win.

“Wow, that was a wild finish. We went back and forth. It was a great race,” said McNamara in a post race interview with Steve Wagner.

Camasta would finish second followed by Hermann Greinig, Kyle Justis, and Andy Jones. Moyer would have to settle for seventh place.

McNamara set quick time with a lap of 14.084 while Moyer was victorious in the heat race.
