A Night of Features is a Night of Excitement at MIS Baumeister, Reffner, Wilberg, Selsing, Padfield, and McNamara Win. Kenseth Victorious in Big 8 Event. By John Wells Friday, August 14, 2009 (Oregon, WI)- Great weather brought out a large crowd, an excellent car count, and exciting racing as fans of all ages were treated to a night of features as part of Swiss Colony Night at Madison International Speedway, an ASA member track. When the night was over there were seven drivers who took home feature wins: John Baumeister Jr. in the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models, Bryan Reffner in the Super Late Models, Bobby Wilberg in the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman, Bobby Selsing Jr. in the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks, Kyle Padfield in the Roto Rooter Bandits, and Aaron Moyer in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends. Ross Kenseth won the Big 8 Late Model race for the second time at MIS. This story can be read here.
Baumeister and Urban Force Cruise to Late Model Victory John Baumeister Jr. had no qualms about his starting position in the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models. Starting on the pole Baumeister led all 40 laps to pick up his first feature win of the 2009 season at MIS. Starting on the pole certainly didnt hurt anything- Ill take it, said Baumeister from the Ricks Lawn and Garden Victory Lane. Baumeister and Ryan Goldade brought the field to the green flag. Zack Riddle would move by Goldade for second on lap 2 with Dave Feiler and Scott Broughton up to third and fourth respectively on lap 5. One lap later point leader Jeremy Miller would crack the top five. The race stayed green until a caution came out on lap 35 for a spin. Was this the opportunity that Riddle would need to get the lead. The answer was no as it was a great restart for Baumeister Jr. and it was very apparent that there would be no denying the Urban Force machine tonight as he wheeled his car to victory lane and his first win in the 2009 season. Riddle would hold off Feiler for second followed by Broughton and Miller in race that only took a little over fourteen minutes to complete. Its been way too long. This was awesome. Im happy for everyone on the Urban Force team including the kids who help out every week. This is a great win, said Baumeister. Miller set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 18.991. Miller has been dominant in qualifying this season as it was his eighth fast time out of nine tries. Two twelve lap qualifying races were held with wins going to Shaun Scheel and Andy Evraets. Reffner Flies to Feature Win as Super Lates Return to MIS Bryan Reffner held off Dave Feiler to win the 50 lap feature for the Super Late Models. Dave Klein and Jesse Saunders led the field to the green flag as the super late models made their return to MIS. Saunders would gain the early advantage over the field with Reffner up to second on lap 3 followed closely by Dan Lensing. It was clear that Saunders was going to have his hands full with Reffner and by lap 8 he could handle no more as Reffner dropped to the inside and cleared Saunders for the top spot coming out of turn four. On lap 9 Bobby Wilberg took over third from Dan Lensing with Dave Feiler quickly moving up to fifth. Wilberg would move into the second position on lap 13 when he passed Saunders with Feiler moving into third place one lap later. On lap 18 fast qualifier Andrew Morrissey would crack the top ten, but the three cars of Reffner, Wilberg, and Feiler were starting to put some distance between themselves and the field. Lap 28 would find Feiler passing Wilberg for second place and quickly closing the gap behind Reffner. It appeared that Feiler had the speed to get by Reffner, but the opportunity never presented itself as the veteran from Stevens Point would hang on to pick up the win. Following Reffner and Feiler in the top five were Morrissey, Wilberg, and Saunders. I didnt know if it was ever going to come. Weve been struggling all year. We didnt want to lose this one. You keep an eye on the cars behind you and it seemed like we could never put more than a car length between us. It was great to win and came on a great night at a great track, said Reffner in a post race interview. Morrissey set fast time with a lap of 17.771. Super Late Models 50 Lap Feature:1. Bryan Reffner (Stevens Point, WI), 2. Dave Feiler (Sun Prairie, WI), 3. Andrew Morrissey (DeForest, WI), 4. Bob Wilberg (, WI), 5. Jesse Saunders (Janesville, WI), 6. Dan Lensing (Roscoe, IL), 7. Two in a Row for Wilberg Bobby Wilberg worked his way up through the field and took the lead for good and took his car to victory lane for the second straight time in the 20 lap feature for the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman. John Handeland and Stephen Scheel comprised the front row for the twelve car field. Scheel would get it done early as he vaulted past Handeland for the point before trouble happened behind the leaders on lap 2 bringing out the caution flag and sending three cars to the pits. Scheel would continue his lead after the green waved again with Steve Dickson and Ryan Goldade both applying heavy pressure for the lead. On lap 10 Wilberg had joined the top five and was moving up fast. Goldade took over second from Dickson on lap 11 with Wilberg passing Robert Hansberry on lap 13 to take over the third position. With Scheel still out front, Wilberg raced his way past Goldade for second on lap 14 and two laps later made his move on the backstretch to take the lead from Scheel and successfully did so while coming out of turn three. From there it was all Wilberg as he cruised to victory lane. Goldade would finish second followed by Scheel, point leader Jay Kalbus, and Hansberry. In a post race interview Wilberg made reference to a rough start earlier in the night. That was a lot of fun out there. Weve kindve had a bad night going here tonight (reference to Big 8 accident) so it was good to have a little bit of luck going. It worked out well for us tonight. Wilberg also set fast time with a very quick lap of 20.256. Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman 20 Lap Feature:1. Bob Wilberg (Beloit, WI), 2. Ryan Goldade (Stoughton, WI), 3. Padfield Edges Ace for the Checkered Flag Late race excitement was the rule in the Roto Rooter Bandits as Kyle Padfield won for the second time in a row in the 20 lap feature. Teresa Verburgt and Tytus Helgestad had the honors of bringing the sixteen car field to the green flag. Verburgt would get out to the early lead before the caution flag came out on lap 3 for a spin. Verburgt would continue to lead after the restart followed closely by Jovanni DiMaggio and Alan Stillman before the caution flag came out again on lap 5. The next caution would come out one lap later and that would involve the leader and move DiMaggio into the top position followed by Chester Ace, Lee Haag, Padfield, and Cory Skolaski. With caution flags counting as laps, the field quickly lined up for the restart. DiMaggios lead would be short-lived as Ace got by him coming out of turn two on lap 12. Two laps later Padfield would move by DiMaggio for second before the caution came out on lap 16. Ace would hold the lead on the restart before Padfield somehow found room to get by on lap 19 and hang on for the win. Ace would finish second followed by Cory Skolaski, Jody Schmidt, and Lee Haag. I could see that clock ticking every time I looked up at the scoreboard so I knew it was going to come down to Chester and me, said Padfield who finished second seven times in 2008. When asked about the five wins this here he said, I must have been saving them up. Ace was the fast qualifier with a lap of 15.507. Roto Rooter Bandits 20 Lap Feature:1. Kyle Padfield (Janesville, WI), 2. Chester Ace (Oregon, WI), 3. Cory Skolaski (Fitchburg, WI), 4. Jody Schmidt (Belleville, WI), 5. Lee Haag (Belleville, WI), 6. Jovanni DiMaggio (Oregon, WI), 7. Theres No Denying Bobby Selsing Jr. It was a wire to wire victory for Bobby Selsing Jr. as he took home top honors in the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks after winning the 15 lap feature. Selsing Jr. and Ken Au paced the field of eight Hobby Stocks to the green flag. Selsing Jr. wasted not time in getting out tot the lead with Chad Knaus and Terry Ciano Jr. up to challenge. By lap 5 the leader had built up a ten car length advantage over the field before the caution for a spinning car negated it all. The restart was good for Selsing Jr. as he continued to build a lead. Behind him Don Fassett would take over second place on lap 9 when he powered past Ciano Jr. and focus his attention on the leader. But tonight 15 laps wouldnt be enough for Fassett to catch Selsing Jr. as the Bat Boy picked up his fourth feature win of the 2009 season. Fast qualifier Brad Luck would finish third followed by Knaus and Ciano Jr. After taking a victory lap Selsing Jr. had this to say from victory lane. I have to thank my dad for all his hard work and dedication. Weve been fighting this thing (car) from day one. Fassett was fast and I knew he was going to be there. Two was Lucks lucky number in qualifying as his lap time was a 22.222. Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks Feature:1. Bobby Selsing Jr. (Fort Atkinson, WI), 2. Don Fassett (Wisconsin Dells, WI), 3. Moyer Holds Off the Field for Legends Win Aaron Moyer made it two in a row in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends as he held off Max McNamara to win the 20 lap feature for the second time in a row. The field was brought to the green by Tim Narr and Kyle Justis with the veteran Narr showing the most speed from the start. Narr led for the first three laps before getting slightly off the pace coming out of turn four. This allowed Moyer to motor by both Narr and Justis on the inside to take the lead. Moyer built some real estate between himself and Hermann Greinig who had moved up to second. Point leader Max McNamara would sneak by Greinig for the second position on lap 6 just prior to the caution flag coming out one lap later. Despite another caution it would be all Moyer as he sprinted to his second feature win in a row and third in 2009 at MIS. McNamara would finish second followed by Greinig, Adam Rawski, and Brandon Heisler. When asked about his win he said, This is great. I want to thank my parents and everyone for making this possible including the fans. Moyer also added his trip to North Carolina to race may be paying dividends. I learned a lot down there and hope to go back next summer. McNamara set fast time with a lap of 13.991 around the Ring of Fire. Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends 20 Lap Feature:1.
