Jay Kalbus and Team Luck-Ambrose Win Track Championships at MIS

Wilberg, Goldade, Pruitt, Ambrose, Stark, Wood, and Schmidt Win Features.

By John Wells

Oregon, WI (Friday, August 28, 2009)- Despite a nearly two hour rain delay, two divisions were able to crown champions tonight as part of Werner Electrict Night at Madison International Speedway. In the end Jay Kalbus would defend his crown in the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman while Todd Ambrose and Brad Luck would team up to win the title in the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks. The final points night for the Roto Rooter Bandits and the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends will be Friday, September 4th since they were unable to complete their features on the quarter-mile “Ring of Fire.”

Feature winners tonight included Bobby Wilberg and TJ Goldade in the Area Sportsman, Greg Pruitt and Todd Ambrose in the Hobby Stocks, Gary Stark in the International Four Cylinders, John Wood in the USST Super Trucks, and Jody Schmidt in the Bandits. The Bandits event was moved to the half-mile due to the rain and was a non-points race. The Legends were unable to race their feature on the quarter mile and no points were awarded for the night.

Madison International Speedway would like to thank all of the teams who helped get the track dried tonight after the heavy downpour.

Wilberg and Goldade Split Area Sportsman Features

Bobby Wilberg won the 20 lap feature for the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning and TJ Goldade earned his first-ever feature win in the 15 lap feature.

The first feature for the Area Sportsman found Rick Coppernoll and Stephen Scheel leading the field to the green flag. Coppernoll would quickly jump out to the lead with TJ Goldade, Robert Hansberry Jr., and Kurt Kleven right there to challenge. On lap 3 Hansberry Jr. would take over second place from Goldade and begin to close the gap on the leader.

By lap 8, Coppernoll and Hansberry Jr. were side by side and for the next four laps put on a great show battling back and forth for the lead before disaster struck on lap 12 when the two got together bringing out the caution and sending both drivers to the back of the pack.

Being in the right place at the right time was all it took for Bobby Wilberg, who as a result of the incident involving the leaders, would take over the lead. From this point on the race belonged to Wilberg as he kept his distance over Kleven to pick up the feature win. Finishing behind Wilberg and Kleven would be Bret Schmidt, Goldade, and Michael Heelein.

TJ Goldade took the lead from his outside first row starting position and never looked back as he led wire to wire to pick up his first ever feature win the Area Sportsman.

Goldade would power by pole sitter Stephen Scheel to take the lead on the very first lap. Scheel would remain a distant second place before relinquishing that position to Kurt Kleven on lap 8. With Goldade building a nice cushion between himself and the field, Kleven would do everything he could to keep himself close. On lap 13, Bobby Wilberg would race by Scheel for third and start to hunt down Kleven for the second position.

Kleven would be able to fend off Wilberg for second place, but nobody would have what it takes to catch Goldade as the second year driver cruised to victory lane in the Team Goldade #81. It was two weeks in a row in victory lane as Goldade's brother Ryan landed in the Rick Lawn and Garden Service Victory Lane last week.

Wilberg was fast qualifier with a lap of 20.026.

Jay Kalbus successfully defended his track championship in the division despite some doubt earlier in the evening. Kalbus suffered mechanical problems early on in the night, but was able to jump in the car of Bob Coppernoll to race each feature. Kalbus won the championship with 951 points followed by Bobby Wilberg with 907 and Kurt Kleven with 860. The Team Goldade car finished in fourth with 767 points while Rookie of the Year Stephen Scheel finished fifth with 701 points. Rounding out the top ten were Team Hansberry, Don Wickstrum, Michael Heelein, Bret Schmidt, and John Handeland.

Pruitt and Ambrose Power Their Way to Hobby Stock Wins

Greg Pruitt and Todd Ambrose each won a 15 lap feature for the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks.

Ten cars took to the track in the first feature with Bobby Selsing Jr. and Scott Luck bringing the field to the green flag. Selsing Jr. would pull out to the early lead but it would be short-lived as Pruitt was quickly up to challenge.

On lap 2 Pruitt pulled alongside Selsing Jr. and the two raced side by side before Pruitt would eventually make the pass on the outside while the two raced down the front shoot on lap 3. But Selsing Jr. was not about to throw in the towel as he battled back for the lead on lap 4 before Pruitt would regain the top spot on lap 6.

Pruitt would build some real estate between himself and Selsing Jr. who was in his own fight with Don Fassett for second. Fassett would take the second position on lap 7 only to lose a wheel coming out of turn four on lap 10 that would bring out the caution flag.

Following the restart Pruitt would continue his mastery over the field and cruise his way to victory lane for the first time in 2009. Brad Luck would work his way up to second followed by Terry Ciano Jr., Joey Thomas, and Scott Luck.

In the second fifteen lap feature it would once again be Scott Luck and Bobby Selsing Jr. pacing the field to the green flag. This time, though, Chad Knaus would show the most early speed as he jumped out to the early lead. Scott Luck would maintain the runner-up spot until lap 6 when Todd Ambrose motored by him with Terry Ciano Jr. in tow.

Ambrose would quickly begin cutting into Knaus' lead and on lap 11 made his move to the outside of Knaus coming out of turn two to take over the lead. From this point on the race clearly belonged to Ambrose who took his track championship car to victory lane. Knaus would finish second followed by Ciano Jr., Don Fassett, and Scott Luck.

Ambrose was fast qualifier for the division with a lap of 21.837.

The Team of Brad Luck and Todd Ambrose won the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks championship with a total of 1030 points. Don Fassett finished in second place with 915 points followed by Bobby Selsing Jr. with 860, Terry Ciano Jr. with 829, and Rookie of the Year Chad Knaus with 775. The team of Luck and Ambrose become the first team champions at MIS since the track reopened in the early 1990's.

Schmidt Gets the Bandit Checkered Flag on the Half-Mile

Jody Schmidt made all the right adjustments as the Roto Rooter Bandits were forced to take their show to the half-mile as he won the 10 lap feaure, a non-points event.

It was a wide-eyed group of fifteen drivers who took to Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile with Jonathan Coker and Alan Stillman comprising the front row. Coker would jump out to the early lead on the first lap before a very fast Jovanni DiMaggio would race by him on lap 2. Not to be outdone, Schmidt kept pace with DiMaggio and moved into second place.

Unfortunately for DiMaggio he would get loose coming out of turn four while in the lead on lap 4 and surrender the top spot to Schmidt. Despite a caution on lap 6 for a spin, Schmidt would continue his lead. But it wasn't over yet.

Chester Ace had other ideas as he was definitely up for the challenge of the big track tonight and worked his way up to second place past Coker and DiMaggio. But Schmidt was simply too fast tonight and Ace wouldn't have enough laps to catch him as the Belleville driver would hang on to pick up the win. Finishing behind Schmidt and Ace would be Coker, DiMaggio, and Kyle Padfield.

Earlier in the night on the “Ring of Fire” Lee Haag set fast time with a lap of 15.583 while heat wins went to Art Blakely and Schmidt.

Stark Supreme in International Four Cylinders

Gary Stark won for the second time in as many tries in 2009 by taking the checkered flag in the 15 lap feature for the International Four Cylinders.

Seth Reamer and Dale Smith had the honors of bringing the International Four Cylinders to the green flag for the start of their fifteen lap feature following the rain delay. Gary Stark, who started seventh, would waste no time as he sprinted to the front before the field could make one lap.

Dale Smith maintained the second position and kept Stark in his sights before Jason Kubicz took over second on lap 4. The caution flag would wave on lap 7 due to an accident on the backstretch that would end Seth Reamer's night early.

Stark would continue his control over the field after the restart with Ken Hoff Jr. making his way to second on lap 10. However, Kyle Smith was really gaining speed as he flew by Hoff Jr. on lap 12 for second and began to close the gap between himself and Stark. A caution on lap 13 would negate some of Stark's lead, but a great restart would propel Stark to victory lane and make it two for two in 2009 at MIS. Kyel Smith would finish second followed by Hoff Jr, Dale Smith, and Kubicz.

Stark set fast time with a lap of 22.908 while heat wins went to Reamer and Dale Smith..

A Clean Sweep for John Wood in USST

John Wood returned to victory lane in fine fashion tonight as he picked up a clean sweep in the USST Super Trucks by winning the 20 lap main event.

Veteran drivers Butch Mierendorf and Jeff Babb paced the field to the green flag in the twenty lap USST feature. Babb got out to the early lead before the caution flag would come out on lap 2 for a spin.

Following the restart Babb would continue to run out front followed by Mierendorf. Gary Cerny and John Wood moved into the second and third positions behind Babb on lap 7 and were closing on the leader very quickly.

On lap 11 Cerny and Wood would both move to the inside of Babb and would pass the leader coming out of turn four. Cerny and Wood then battled it out for three laps before Wood got down to the inside of Cerny coming down the front straightaway and would make the pass for the coming out of turn two on lap 14.

Cerny would be able to keep it close, but their was no denying Wood who raced is way to victory lane and completed the clean sweep. Cerny would finish second followed by Babb, Jerry Wood, and Todd Lockington.

Wood set fast time with a lap of 18.926 with heat victories going to Mierendorf and Wood.
