Jeremy Miller, Chester Ace and Max McNamara Win MIS Championships

By John Wells

Oregon, WI (Friday, September 4, 2009)- Jeremy Miller finished the year in style by winning one of the Twin 30s for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models enroute to his 2009 track championship at Madison International Speedway. For the second year in a row, Chester Ace (Roto Rooter Bandits) and Max McNamara (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) took home titles.

Miller won the first late model feature while Ryan Goldade picked up the second event. McNamara made it a clean sweep by winning the rescheduled points event and the non-points race while Jody Schmidt took home the checkered flag in the Roto Rooter Bandits feature and 2009 track champion Jay Kalbus won in the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman non-points race.

Miller and Goldade Share Feature Wins

Jeremy Miller wanted to make sure there was no doubt going into the second feature as to who was going to win the 2009 track championship. He made that very clear after taking home the win in the first 30 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.

John Baumeister Jr. and Jason Hicks paced the field of twenty-two to the green flag with Baumeister Jr. getting out to the lead with a burst of speed. It appeared to be smooth sailing for Johnny B as he built up a several car lead over Hicks. On lap 6 both Miller and Dave Feiler sprinted by Nathan Oppliger to move to fourth and fifth respectively. On lap 8 they were ready to do the same to Zack Riddle as they moved up to third and fourth behind Baumeister Jr. and Hicks.

On lap 17 Hicks would surrender the second spot to Feiler with Miller and Scott Broughton up to third and fourth on lap 18. But the view continued to look good to Baumeister Jr. who continued to build up his lead.

But Feiler has other ideas as he closed the gap on the leader. Coming into this event tied for second in points with Bobby Wilberg, Feiler, the quick qualifier earlier in the evening, looked to have what it took to get the lead.

After a caution on lap 27 everything was in place for Feiler to go for the lead. As the field came back to the green Feiler experienced major mechanical problems and his car lost power coming down the front shoot and ending his night and bringing out the caution. This would move Miller and Broughton up to second and third and eagerly awaiting the restart.

Baumeister Jr. would continue his advantage over the field for just one more lap as Miller dropped to the low side of the track and took the lead on lap 28 with Broughton right behind him in second place. From here it was all Miller who led the final laps and took his car to victory lane for the second time in 2009. Broughton would take home second place followed by Baumeister Jr,, Hicks, and Riddle.

“This was a blast. We’re finally having the car turning the way we want it,” said Miller who won his second feature of the season. “It’s been a lot of hard work the past couple of months trying to get this championship wrapped up. I tell you this was a lot of fun.”

The second feature would find Chad Stevens and Ryan Golade on the front row of the twenty two car field. Stevens would jump out to the early lead with Goldade in second and Kevin Tunks right behind Goldade.

Stevens would continue to pace the field out front for the first seventeen laps before the caution flag came out on lap 17 for a spin in turn two just as Goldade was about to take the lead away from Stevens.

Goldade would eventually take the lead as he pulled inside of Stevens and made his move going into turn three on lap 18. On lap 20 Tunks was up to second followed by Brady Liddle, Zack Riddle, and Bobby Wilberg. Looking very strong running out front, Goldade would continue to lead before the caution flag came out on lap 28.

On the restart, Tunks was right on the rear bumper of Goldade and it appeared that things were about to get very interesting. But Goldade was able to keep his lead and hold off Tunks to take home the win. Finishing behind Goldade and Tunks were Liddle, Wilberg, and Jeremy Miller.

Feiler set fast time with a lap 18.782 while John Ovadal Jr. won the 12 lap last chance race.

For Goldade it was his first feature win of the season and he celebrated with one of the best burnouts of the year. “My team did a helluva job this year. Those last laps were pretty crazy. We came out of the last chance race and still were able to win the feature.”

Series sponsor Gary Rockweiler addressed the crowd as well. “Isn’t this the most exciting racing division in the state. Look at the car counts and the quality of the teams. I am so happy to be part of this. These guys put on a great show. Ryan did a heck of a job holding on to the car the last lap.”

Rounding out the top three in championship points for the season were Bobby Wilberg and Zack Riddle.

Schmidt Wins the Battle of the Bandits

Last week Jody Schmidt and his fellow Roto Rooter Bandit drivers found themselves racing on the half-mile due to the rain. Schmidt won that race and returned to the “Ring of Fire” tonight and won the 20 lap feature.

Teresa Verburgt and Lee Haag led the field of fifteen cars to the green flag with Verburgt getting out front early. By lap 2 Schmidt would make his way up to second followed by Jovanni DiMaggio before the first caution flag came out on lap 4.

Verburgt would continue to lead until Schmidt would find the room he needed to pass for the lead coming out of turn four on lap 6 just before the caution flag would wave again. The caution flag would also come out on laps 8 and 10 with Schmidt maintaining his lead each time.

Chester Ace, Kyle Padfield, and Cory Skolaski were not about to let Schmidt run away with this one. On lap 13 Ace was ready to make his move for the lead but wouldn’t get the room he needed as these four cars jostled for position out front as they put some room between themselves and the rest of the field.

It was back and forth for several laps but each time Schmidt was able to fight off the competition. On lap 19 Padfield was ready to give it one last shot as he took to the outside to try to slingshot his way past Schmidt. But his efforts would come up just short as Schmidt would take the win by less than a car length at the line. Finishing behind Schmidt and Padfield would be Cory Skolaski, Ace, and Lee Haag.

“This was a wild one. It’s great to get the win on the quarter mile. I really enjoyed racing on the half-mile last week,” said Schmidt from victory lane.

Heat wins went to Jonathan Coker and Schmdit while Ace set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 15.548.

Ace would win his second season championship in a row followed by Padfield and Schmidt. “This was a lot of hard work this year. The competition is strong and things didn’t come without a lot of effort,” said Ace.

McNamara Dominates the Legends

Talk about a clean sweep. Max McNamara, a senior at Grant Community High School, picked up the sweep in the makeup events from August 28th and then proceeded to sweep the non-points events from tonight on his way to his second straight track championship. The wins were his sixth and seventh of the season.

“The car was running great and this is a big night for us,” said McNamara who has his eyes set on a national INEX qualifier later this month. “We’ve had a real good year here at Madison and the trip up here was definitely worthwhile.”

Nine cars took the green flag in the makeup points race with Adam Rawski and Tim Narr pacing the field to the green flag. Rawski showed a great deal of early speed and vaulted out to the lead before the first caution flag waved on lap 3 for a spin.

Rawski continued to show the way out front with the hard charging McNamara getting by Hermann Greinig for second on lap 5 and getting inside Rawski coming out of turn four on lap 6 to take the lead just before the caution flag would come out again.

McNamara would continue his leading ways with Aaron Moyer and Rawski battling it out behind him for second place. But, like we’ve seen many times this season, McNamara was simply too quick and drove his way to victory lane. Moyer would win the battle for second followed by Rawski, Greinig, and Narr.

The second feature would look much more like the first one as Rawski would bring the twelve car field to the green alongside Tommy Jones. Once again Rawski would get out to the early lead with Jones in second. By lap 8 McNamara was up to third and ready to challenge Jones for second before back to back cautions would move McNamara into the lead on lap 9.

From here it was McNamara and everyone else trying to chase him with Andy Jones, Hermann Greing, and Aaron Moyer having the best shots. Moyer would eventually get by Andy Jones for second but the race was never in doubt as McNamara cruised to victory lane. Moyer and Jones would finish in second and third followed by Greinig and Brandon Heisler.

“It was a good race. I really had to work my way through the field in this one. It feels good,” said McNamara.

McNamara set fast time for both events with laps of 13.974 and 14.057 with the makeup heat races going to Adam Rawski and McNamara and the non-points heats also won by the pair.

Following McNamara in the points race were Moyer and Greinig.

Kalbus Speeds His Way to Victory Lane

After having to drive a back up car at last week’s championship night which allowed him to win the track title, Jay Kalbus returned in his own car and powered his way to victory lane by winning the 20 lap event for the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman.

The nine car field was led to the green by Rick Coppernoll and John Olson who was piloting the Bobby Wilberg machine. Olson got out front from the start with TJ Goldade moving past Coppernoll on the first lap.

Following the restart after a caution on lap 2, Olson would only be able to maintain his lead for another lap as Robert Hansberry Jr. and Kalbus would both power by him on lap 3 as the trio came out of turn four. Hansberry’s lead would be short-lived as well as Kalbus pulled down to the inside coming out of turn two and would clear Hansberry Jr. coming out of turn three to take the lead.

From this point Kalbus quickly put some distance between himself and the field. Kurt Kleven apperared to be the only car who might have a shot at the leader as he moved into second place ahead of Hansberry Jr. on lap 11.

Kleven would put up a valiant effort to close the gap on Kalbus and was hoping to see yellow- the yellow flag that is. But unfortunately the race stayed green and his efforts would come up short as Kalbus was simply too fast tonight. Hansberry Jr. would finish third followed by Don Wickstrum and Olson.

Despite a solid performance in the points from start to finish, this was Kalbus’ first trip to victory lane since late June. “It’s great to get back here,” he said. “After last week I had to redeem myself. I’ve got to thank Rick Coppernoll for lending me the car last week because if it weren’t for that we wouldn’t have won the championship.”

Fast time went to Kalbus with a lap of 20.272 while Coppernoll won the heat race.

Prior to the racing program, MIS took time to honor Racetrack Safety, Seitz Towing, and Oregon Fire and EMS for all they do in making the racing program possible. “They are without a doubt the best around,” said MIS General Manager Dave Grueneberg.

MIS track owner Terry Kunes received a plaque from Pete Raskovic of the ASA Educational Series for his efforts in getting this program started. This year MIS awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to area high school students who worked on crews or drove at MIS. “This award is really about the fans and the teams. Without all of you, none of this would be possible,” said Kunes.

During intermission bus rides were provided to the young fans compliments of Wayne Ace Bus Service.

The track would also like to thank all of the teams, sponsors and fans for their support of racing at MIS.

Racing continues at Madison International Speedway on Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26th for the third annual MIS Fall Classic. Friday night divisions include Late Models, Area Sportsman, Hobby / Pure Stocks, Bandits, Legends, International Four Cylinders, and American Short Trackers. On Saturday the Mid American Stock Car Series and USST Super Trucks will join the Late Models, Area Sportsman, Hobby / Pure Stocks, Bandits, and Legends. Both nights will be separate shows with the five divisions who are running both events receiving bonus money for the top overall finishers.

Complete information will be posted on our website this week.
