Don Fassett

By John Wells

“I like the speed. I know we're not as fast as the late models, but when you haul one of these hobby stocks into the corner - hold on. I hope it looks as fast from the stands as it feels when you're in the car.” That's how Don Fassett describes his experience at MIS in the Weaver Auto Parts Hobby Stocks division in 2009.

Fassett grew up in and around the Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois. “I pretty much grew up there. My uncle built a car that Jack Spinazola drove to a championship about thirty years ago. That car was a bright orange #8- my car is a tribute to that car. Racing was all I ever knew until I went into the Army.”

“I only got serious about racing four years ago when I built my first 'real” car (his current car). Before that I ran a few races a season for several years in the Midwest Enduro Series.” Fassett has picked up three feature wins in his career including one at MIS in 2008 when the Hobby Stocks were given the opportunity to run on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile.

So what's a typical week like for Fassett. “There is no typical week. We assess the damage that I caused the previous week and I try to get parts ordered / phone calls placed / favors called in and begs pleaded by Monday. Then I try to get one good night of work in on the car. My wife keeps me informed of any appointments or any non-racing stuff that I would never remember.”

But his week is even busier. “I work two jobs to keep this car running. I also have a vinyl graphics business, Adrenaline Graphics, and do a lot of vinyl graphics for other racers. That keeps me pretty busy too. In between all that I work on cars out of my race shop. There are never enough hours; rae days are my relaxing days.”

Fassett is very appreciative of the help he receives especially from his wife. “My wife is a true racer's wife. She is supportive in every way. She is at every race when she can be, and takes care of a lot of stuff for me that I would normally forget. I could not do this without the help of a lot of great sponsors and my Adrenaline Motorsports pit crew. I know it's a cliché and everyone says it, but it truly is from the heart, and all these people spend a lot of their time and a lot of their money so that I can drive around in circles. It is humbling.” Fassett is also very thankful for the efforts of both Darrell Kapp of Kapp Racing Products and Doug Jeske. “They have been working like crazy this year.”

When he gets to the track he is ready to race. “I get very antsy sitting in the car - not nervous, but the adrenaline just starts pumping and I just want to get out there and race. Sitting there waiting just kills me! When the race is over I want my fellow competitors to say they wish they could have beaten me. I want the respect of my fellow competitors and I hope they say I race hard, but clean.”

Fassett doesn't really have any ambitions to race beyond where he's at now. “I'm right where I want to be. My wallet can't take much more. I would like to win a championship.”

Don Fassett is another one of the Friday Night Stars that call Madison International Speedway their home on Friday nights from May through September.
