Jason Hicks Aims for the Top at MIS in 2009

By John Wells

After a fifth place finish in the point standings in 2008, Jason Hicks of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, is setting his sights even higher in 2009 as he races for the track championship in the Late Model division at Madison International Speedway.

Hicks will face some tough competition in the Late Model division at MIS in 2009. After finishing behind two-time track champion Bob Wilberg, Ross Kenseth, Ryan Goldade, and Brady Liddle last season Hicks knows the move to the top won’t be easy, but he’s ready for the challenge and is quick to point out the strong level of competition at Madison. “I have a lot of respect for each of my fellow competitors. The Late Model division is comprised of a very talented group of drivers and teams who can win on any given night.”

“It is not easy to win at MIS because of the incredible level of competition,” said Hicks. “It starts at the shop because it takes a lot of hard work to make sure the car is well prepared. At the track it takes a great crew to make the right adjustments to the car. On the track there are a lot of things that can happen. First of all you’ve got to have great handling car, you’ve got to miss all the wrecks, make all the right moves, hit your marks and a little luck never hurts. You miss your mark one time and it could be the difference between winning and losing.”

In 2008 Hicks won one feature and picked up two heat wins at MIS in additon to a victory in the Wayne’s Custom DIECAST Dash Series. After finishing his first two races out of the top twenty, Hicks finished strong with eight top ten finishes including back to back third place finishes in August. Hicks capped off his solid finish with a feature win at the MIS Fall Classic. “Last year we won one feature, so I’d like to win at least 3-4 features this year. If we can run like we did the last six races of the season in 2008, I think we have a great chance of achieving my overall goal of winning the championship.”

He is definitely no stranger to racing as his resume includes sixteen years of racing experience in everything from a Street Stock to a Super Late Model. In 2004 he was second in points at Lake Geneva Raceway in the Super Late Models, was Rookie of the Year in the Mid American Truck Series in 1998, and also raced in the Mid American Stock Car Series. “Racing has always been a big part of my family and has been in my blood since I was kid. My Dad won a couple late model track championships back in the 1970’s and early 1980’s at Lake Geneva Raceway. I actually started going to his shop when I was four years old. He started to help a friend of ours in 1992 with a street stock at LGR. He needed some extra help, so I became a crew member. As I became more involved, I expressed my interested to my Dad about getting our own car for me to drive. The next winter we built a street stock and started racing at LGR.”

Hicks is a big fan of racing at MIS and looks forward to making the nearly one hour trip every Friday night. “What I like best is the layout of the track because it makes for great racing for the racers and fans. I also think the track is run very well. I think Terry, Dave and the whole MIS team does a great job every night.”

Hicks’ sponsors for 2008 included Raybestos Brakes, A & A Sheetmetal Works, Quality Tire Service, Setterman Construction, MODO Exhibits, Rachel Hicks Keefe Real Estate and Protech Paint. His crew consists of his dad and crew chief Larry Hicks and crew members Dave Wick, Glen Carter, Kurt Wagner, Seth Ricker.

During the day Hicks is marketing manager at Intermatic Inc. in Spring Grove, Illinois. He and his wife Rachel have a seventeen month old daughter, Emily.

Weekly Friday night racing at Madison International Speedway will begin on Friday, May 8th and continue through the end of August. MIS is located on Sunrise Road just off Highway 138 two miles east of Oregon, Wisconsin.
