J.D. Leonard

By John Wells

“My dad came home one summer day, and like normal I was playing video games and not really doing anything productive. He said, 'Let's go out to Sugar River Raceway and rent a kart. That sounded like an alright way to pass a couple of hours, but when I got behind the wheel there was no way of getting me out - ever!”

That's how it all started for JD Leonard of Brodhead, Wisconsin, who is racing in the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models at Madison International Speedway in 2009. He's no stranger to MIS as some of his earliest memories of racing happened right here at Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. “The earliest memories were actually going up to Madison with my dad and watching guys like Steve Carlson, Ryan Hanson, and Bobby Wilberg and being amazed at how good they were. At that time I thought I would never be on the same track as them.”

After racing karts for three years, Leonard now has three seasons of experience in stockcars: One year in a late model and two years in the Pro Cup Series. “I haven't really won a race yet, but I've had some good runs.”

“My goal for this season is to possibly win a race, but my main goal is to have a competitive car in 2010 and run for a championship. My ultimate goal is to have fun. I would love to be a professional driver, but if it's not fun it would be just like any other job. I want my fellow competitors to say that I raced them clean and gained their respect no matter where or what I am racing.”

When it's time to take on the half-mile, Leonard isn't really nervous- he's just hungry. “I know it's strange, but I am normally hungry when were staged to go out. My nerves go away when I'm strapped in and the first thing I think of is if there is something to eat in the car.”

Leonard's plate is pretty full when it comes to life away from Madison International Speedway. “The typical week for me is quite busy. I usually get back from college (UW-Platteville) or work (Supreme Trailer) at 6:00 PM and work on the car until ten or eleven. Monday we plan what we are going to do for the week before really taking things apart on Tuesday. On Wednesday we try to finish the work needed to be done and scale the car to make sure all our weight balances are correct. On Thursday we get the car cleaned and loaded in the race trailer ready for Friday night. The person who helps me the most by far is my dad. He spends almost all of his free time helping me. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be where I am today.”

When he's not at the track, school, or work, Leonard enjoys four wheeling, rock climbing, swimming, snowmobiling, and spending time with his friends. “If I wasn't racing I would try to invent my own kind of soda; I always wanted to do this but never had the time or money.”

JD Leonard is another one of the Friday Night Stars that call Madison International Speedway their home on Friday nights from May through September.
