Kurt Kleven

By John Wells

Kurt Kleven of Utica, Wisconsin, is competing in his first season in the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman division at MIS and remembers when he first got the “bug” to race.

“I remember going to the Jefferson Speedway when I was five years old. I liked the STAR Trucks the most. It's kind of funny now since Chris Ehrhart drove the trucks then and now he's one of my best friends.”

It was quite a few years later before Kurt actually got behind the wheel of a car. “A friend of my dad's gave me his old Sportsman chassis. We were in the process of building one from scratch, but we really didn't know what we were doing. One day I came home from school, and there was a chassis sitting in our shop.”

His racing career actually began in 2001 when he raced at the Jefferson Speedway for a couple of seasons, took a year off, came back for a few races in 2004, took another year off and drove a hobby stock in 2006. This season he will be competing full-time at MIS. “I haven't had too many accomplishments in racing up to this point. Some heat wins, consy races, and last chance wins. Hopefully that will change this year.”

“I love the speed and the banking at MIS. I'd like to be in the top three in points and win a feature this season. I didn't really know what to expect when I came here since my only experience was on a quarter mile. So far I really enjoy racing with TJ Goldade. Whenever I am around him, we usually battle it out pretty good, and we give each other room to race.”

During the week Kleven, like all of the drivers at MIS, spends time working on his car. “We work on our car usually once a week now. We nut and bolt the car from front to back, check the oil, etc. Then we scale the car and get the percentages where we like them. Sometimes we stay up pretty late changing things and trying new stuff to make the car better.”

Kleven couldn't do it alone. “My dad, Mike Smothers, Chris Ehrhart, Tory Bagley, Randy Shultz with Bucknut Apparel all help make this possible. My mom, my girlfriend Brittany, my sister Breah, and everyone who comes out and cheers for me and supports me is very important to my racing efforts.”

When the racing night is done he'd like his fellow competitors to say this: “That I did a good job, wasn't a hooligan, and ran everybody clean and was to race with. Eventually I'd like them to say 'I wish I could've beaten him.'”

Of course Kleven would love to have a chance to race in NASCAR at some point, but moving up to late models and racing in the Big 8 Series would be the next step.

When he's not racing he enjoys riding snowmobiles and four wheelers and if he wasn't racing he would be helping out his friends with their racing operations.

Kurt Kleven is another one of the Friday Night Stars that call Madison International Speedway their home on Friday nights from May through September.
