Meet Max McNamara

By John Wells

Each week Max McNamara makes the trip to Madison International Speedway from Ingleside, Illinois- a one way trip of more than three hours. But for the seventeen year old driver the trip has been well worth it as he won the 2008 Legends track championship and is currently leading the point standings in 2009.

Like many drivers at MIS, McNamara got his start at Sugar River Raceway in Brodhead. “I started in Jr Box Stock and raced there until I was ten. Then I moved up to Jr. Super Stock. When I was 12 I started racing F200 Champ Karts on the oval tracks as part of the Burris Circle Tour. I started racing Legends when I was fifteen and hope to move up to a limited late model next year,” said McNamara.

It's been a busy year for McNamara so far as he attempts to defend his title at MIS without wrecking his chassis and hopes to finish in the top five at “Nationals” in Lanier, Georgia, later this year. “Lately it's been overwhelming. I've been racing at Madison on Fridays, Saturdays at Grundy County Speedway with the UMARA Midget Series, and Sundays at Grundy with GCK Motorsports. We're also starting to run national qualifiers so we can earn a provisional a nationals at the end of the year.”

Of course he couldn't do this alone. “My dad helps me the most. Besides my dad Mike Breiner helps out with our setups and fixing the car when we need to. But I try to do most of the work myself.”

“I think Madison has the best weekly racing series in the area. They have an outstanding facility and for the most part it's a nice group of people. I think the "Ring of Fire" is one of the most challenging tracks I've raced - it's by far a drivers' track.”

So what does McNamara, also known as Mad Max, want his fellow competitors to say about him? “For the most part I want them to say that I'm a clean driver. I help anyone out at the track when they need it like helping adjust their car and parts.”

When he's not racing or working, he likes to dirt bike, go four wheeling, work on cars and do things outdoors. Much of the outdoor activity usually involves being at a racetrack somewhere. “Racing's in my blood so I'm always doing something associated with racing.”

If you're looking for a talented young driver with a proven track record and a bright future, McNamara can use your help. “We're always looking for sponsors,” he added.

Max McNamara is another example of one of the Friday Night Stars you can see at Madison International Speedway each week.
