Meet Aaron Moyer

By John Wells

Aaron Moyer of Eden, Wisconsin, is one of our very talented young drivers at Madison International Speedway competing in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends division every Friday night.

“I really enjoy MIS because we can race in front of great fans, the track is very unique and the name “Ring of Fire” is pretty cool,” said the sixteen year old junior at Campbellsport High School.

Like many of the youthful competitors at MIS, Moyer got his start in racing at a very early age. “I started racing snowmobiles at the age of six then began Bandoleros when I was twelve and Legends when I was fifteen. I remember going to all the local fairgrounds and racing snowmobiles with my family when it was twenty below zero.”

Moyer has made a smooth transition to Legends racing at MIS in his second full season. After finishing in third in points in 2008, Moyer is currently in second place in the points race for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

“Our goals for 2009 are to put a good show on for the fans to keep them coming back for more and cheering for me. I want to be competitive and win the MIS points championship and also win seven features. Racing Legends cars is fairly inexpensive and the cars are all pretty much the same so you really get to show how you can drive. I also like it that quite a few guys have made it to NASCAR after starting in the Legends division.”

Moyer's typical week when he's not in school finds him working at Fred's Fast Trac, getting his car ready for race night and hanging out with his friends. When it comes to race night he's all business. “On race night I mainly focus on hitting my marks and seeing where my main competition is starting in the field. I really like it when guys from outside the area come race at MIS; the bigger the field the better.”

So what does Moyer want his fellow competitors to say about him after a night of racing. “I want to be known as a clean driver that be competitive no matter where we are. I want people to enjoy my company on and off the track and want them to say this guy is so fast he must cheating.”

Moyer thinks a lot about his future in racing. “I want to advance in the sport and move up. Next year our plans are to run the full Summer Shoot Out in North Carolina, while still visiting MIS every other week. Some day I would like to race someone else's race cars and get paid for it.” Moyer got a taste of racing in North Carolina earlier this summer when he spent some time there.

“If I was not racing I would probably be like every other teenager, but racing helps me. My parents keep me focused on my grades and planning on going to school in case someday I have to get a real job. I really like seeing the car go from the garage and seeing how the changes made transfer to the track. I really don't see myself not racing._My whole family helps me at the track from my dad in the pits, mom taking videos, my sister gasing up the car and checking air pressure. Even my aunts, uncles and grandparents in the stands are cheering for me. This is something that my dad and I love doing together; it helps us stay close. I really have to thank both my parents for all the opportunities and support they have given me.”

Moyer may have a nice opportunity to further his education when he recently was presented with a $25,000 scholarship to Ohio Technical College in Cleveland, Ohio, as part of the ASA Educational Series program.

Aaron Moyer is another example of the talented drivers that are Friday Night Stars at Madison International Speedway.
