Shaun and Stephen Scheel By John Wells Madison International Speedway is where Shaun and Stephen Scheel of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, call home every Friday night. In fact they are just one pair of four sets of racing brothers at MIS in 2009. Other racing brothers include Ryan and TJ Goldade, Brandon and Cory Skolaski, and Jon and Jason Coker. Lets learn a little more about this duo. Shaun Scheel, a 2008 high school graduate, has been racing for six years while younger brother Stephen, who is still in high school, has four years under his belt. Shaun is currently racing in the Rockweiler Insulation Late Model division while Stephen is a rookie in the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman. Both drivers got their start in the four cylinder Bandit division which has proven to be a great stepping stone to the half-mile at MIS. Both brothers were also part of the ASA Educational Series at MIS in 2008 winning scholarships to Ohio Technical College in Cleveland, Ohio. Stephen will be part of the ASAES again in 2009. My biggest memory that will always stay with me was in my second year of racing, said Shaun. It was in the fourth week of the season at Jefferson in the Bandit division and my car was running terrible. We qualified nearly in last place despite being in third place in the points at the time. We couldnt figure out what was wrong with the car. Then Mike Taylor came over and helped us fix the cars in just a couple of minutes and we ended up winning the feature that night and at the end of the year the championship. Not to be outdone by his brother, Stephen aka Shaggy has also had good success. My greatest memory was getting Rookie of the Year at both MIS and Jefferson in the Bandit division and finishing runner up at Madison and fifth at Jefferson in the season points race. Weve only raced against each other about fifteen times and that was all in the Bandits division, noted Shaun whose nickname is Shaun the Man of Scheel. Both Shaun and Stephen will be racing Fridays at MIS and Saturdays at Jefferson in 2009. This makes for a pretty busy schedule during the racing season. We typically relax on Sundays since racing both nights wears us out. (Shaun races in the Sportsman division while Stephen competes in the International division at Jefferson). Mondays and Tuesday, we do a little work on the cars depending on how the weekend went; if anything needs to be touched up we do that. We like to keep our cars looking nice for every race. On Wednesdays and Thursdays we basically check over all the cars go through the brakes and suspension and make sure everything is safe and ready for the races. On Fridays we race home from school and get the cars all loaded up and all of our supplies loaded up and head for the track, said Shaun. The brothers definitely are goal-oriented when they look at the 2009 season at MIS. I really want to get Rookie of the Year in the Sportsman division this year, said Stephen. After the June 5th races Stephen has won two heat races and is 8th in points. Added Shaun, My goal is to finish in the top ten in the Late Models and win my first feature this season. He is currently in sixteenth place in the point standings after three weeks. Like all racers they have dreams. I want to win a championship in the Late Model division, and race all over the nation some day, said Shaun. Id like to race all over Wisconsin, maybe in the ASA division at some point and race some tracks out of the state of Wisconsin, added Stephen. So why do they do it? I got involved in racing because I loved watching it on tv. I loved watching Dale Earnhardt race. Plus my dad used to work on a race team long before I was born. I also watched my uncle Dale Smith race when I was younger. If I wasn't racing I probably would have never quit football when I was in high school. I was going to be the varsity quarterback and instead I chose to go racing on Friday nights. Now that I am out of high school and in college, if I wasn't racing I would probably have gone to a college with a football team and tried out for the quarterback position, said Shaun. According to Stephen, I got involved in racing because I liked watching in on tv and my family had been around racing since I was born. Once my brother moved up into the Sportsman division, I decided that I wanted to race myself in his Bandit car. If I wasn't racing I would probably be playing basketball or soccer. Of course Stephen and Shaun couldnt do this without help from others. My dad helps us out a lot. We also help each other out. Josh Lenz, who is part car owner of Rodney Mundt's International, helps out a lot on our cars. Also fellow racer Rodney Mundt helps us out since he keeps his cars at our place. If he ever needs a hand we are there to help him. Also our mom does a lot for our race team; she doesn't work on the cars, but she helps with our fundraiser, getting pictures made, t-shirts made, tapes all the races, and she has always supported the Scheel Racing team, said Shaun. Some of their 2009 sponsors include Lake Mills Lanes, Wagner Construction, and X-52 Oil The Green Revolution. Family is a big part of racing at MIS and the Scheel brothers are a perfect example of how racing is a great opportunity for young people today. | ||
