T.J. Goldade

By John Wells

Although he is only in his second year of racing in the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning Area Sportsman at Madison International Speedway, TJ Goldade of Stoughton has been around racing for most of his life.

“I would have to say that some of my earliest memories of racing would be going to watch my dad (Tod) at Columbus and Jefferson when I was four or five. I'm on my second year as a driver, but I've been around the sport / lifestyle for twenty-one years,” said TJ. “I had some successful years as my brother's (Ryan) crew chief from 2003 until 2008 when I started driving. I still help him whenever and however I can in the shop and on race day at MIS. If I'm not driving the Sportsman car (TJ and Ryan will race as a team in 2009) I will be his crew chief.”

In his rookie season at MIS, Goldade picked up one heat win and finished fourth in the final points standings. He was also selected as “Fan Favorite” in the Area Sportsman division and his car was selected as “Best Appearing.” So how does 2009 look for Goldade?

“My goal for '09 is to continue maturing as a driver. I will continue racing as hard as I have been so far so we can stay in the top three in points. I would love to get that first feature win. I want my fellow competitors to say that I'm a clean, tough, but fair competitor. My ultimate goal would be to win a track championship.”

Goldade loves racing at MIS and respects the competition. “When I was a kid I enjoyed going to MIS to watch 'the big dogs.” I've always looked up to Bobby Wilberg. I enjoy racing against Scott Lawver the most. I also really enjoy racing against Jay Kalbus, Kurt Kleven, and of course, Wilberg. These guys are just plain fun to race with.”

“When I get out on the half-mile I'm just focused on the task at handÉgoing to the front. I'm very calm before a race, I know some guys are a little nervous. Now after the race, I am on such an adrenaline high. My hands will shake for a while before I calm down.”

Like all drivers, a great deal of work takes place prior to getting to MIS on Friday nights. “A typical week for me starts on Monday night. I work at Stoughton Tire and Auto until 5:30, then my crew guys, Ryan Bersing and Ted Artis, meet me at the shop. We have a four page checklist of safety features we need to go over each week. We get together on Tuesday again and try to have everything ready for Friday night so we can load the car on Wednesday. We want our car coming to the track on Friday night looking like it's brand new. That's something we're very proud of,” added Goldade.

Goldade is very thankful for the support he receives from his family, crew, and sponsors. “Without any of those people I couldn't do this.”

Besides racing Goldade enjoys spending time with friends, going to rock concerts, playing video games and reading books on racing, bands, and American history. He also enjoys watching his two professional football teams the Packers and Steelers.

TJ Goldade is another one of the Friday Night Stars that call Madison International Speedway their home on Friday nights from May through September.
