by John Wells

Last year during our Salute to America Night we were joined by several volunteers from the Badger Honor Flight, one of many such groups around the country that honor our veterans from World War 2 and now the Korean War with a "honor" flight to Washington, DC. I was able to interview some of those responsible for making the Honor Flight a reality.

As I actively listened to their message that night, I thought about my 88 year old father and seeing him get the opportunity to join the Badger Honor Flight.

You can imagine how excited I was when earlier this year he told me he was selected to join the trip for the May 4th flight to Washington, DC and wanted me to join him as his guardian.

After participating in a training session a couple of weeks prior to the trip (learning how to go up stairs, escalators, push wheel chairs, etc) I found out that at least two others from his home town would be making the trip too. As guardians we were given strict orders to stay close to our veterans the entire time..I would be scolded a couple of times for letting my dad get too far ahead of me on the trip! I also realized what a tremendous network of volunteers make up the Badger Honor Flight crew with literally hundreds on hand to make sure all of the guardians received proper training.

On the big day it meant getting up at 3:30 AM to be at the airport by 4:30. No problem for me since my days typically begin about 4:15 on most days. Once we arrived we were again greeted by volunteers including several Boy Scouts from my home town.

Everyone went to great lengths to show appreciation for these WW2 / Korean War veterans by thanking them for their service. This would conintue throughout the day both in Madison and in our nation's capital. To see the look on all of the veteran's faces was priceless. At times it might have been overwhelming. You have to realize that all of the veterans were in their 80's or older. My dad wasn't the oldest in the group as a couple of gentlemen going with us were 96 years young.

The experience in DC was amazing. The volunteers from Badger Honor Flight were absolutely amazing in that they had everything covered from meals to meds to transportation needs. Words cannot say enough for those who give of their time so that others can experience this journey.

We started our day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery then it was off to the Iwo Jima statue, WW2 Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam and Korean Memorials before ending the day at the Air Force Memorial. With a police escort leading our four bus caravan around the city, we were easily able to see all the sites and return to Madison the same day.

While visiting many of the sites people were there to greet the veterans with applause, hand shakes, and kind words.

The highlight of the day was yet to come.

Arriving back at Madison around 9:00 PM the veterans were greeted by well over 2,000 well wishers in the terminal. Seeing the veterans come down the escalator to the cheers of the crowd left me speechless. Seeing our family and friends of my dad in the crowd meant so much to him including the Colony Brands poster with his picture on it.

I know not everyone will have the opportunity to participate in this experience, but I highly encourage you to contribute your time or a financial contribution to the Badger Honor Flight. You see, all of the veterans travel free thanks to these contributions.

To all of the volunteers who made this trip possible I say thank you!

by John Wells

It's eerily quiet at Madison International Speedway as the legendary racing facility switches to a special event schedule in 2013. But things are about to change...

The sights and sounds of exciting tractor and truck pulling come to Madison on Saturday, June 1st in the form of the Badger State Tractor Pullers and Tri County Mini-Rods.

Three divisions (466 Hot Farm, Super Farm, and Pro Street Diesel Trucks) represent Badger State and will be joined by a full field of Tri County Mini-Rods.

Speedway officials have announced that the first round of the Super Late Model Triple Crown Challenge slated for Sunday, June 16th will now be known as the Dick Trickle Memorial 99. The race will be the first of the four Triple Crown Challenge events scheduled for 2013 at MIS.

"We want to take the opportunity to honor one of the greatest short track racing legends," said MIS Business Manager Jason Tyler. "Dick Trickle was a hero to so many who grew up watching him race at short tracks throughout the Midwest. His name is synonymous with short track racing."

Trickle logged an amazing amout of miles at Madison especially in the early 1970's. He won track championships at Madison in 1971 and 1972 and took home an amazing 72 feature wins on the half-mile. His victory total tops the list of all-time feature winners at Madison. It has been reported that over the course of his career Trickle won more than 1200 races.

MIS General Manager Dave Grueneberg remembered Trickle as a fierce competitor and an all around good guy. "It wasn't unusual to see Trickle pull into the pits shortly before the races, roll his car off the trailer, and go out and win. He was just that good."

From an interview for the MIS Yearbook in 2005, Trickle had this to say about Madison. "Madison has always been one of the top racing venues in the Midwest. Not only is the track itself fast, but the fans are knowledgeable and love racing. It was always an enthusiastic crowd. The fans were great. From Rockford to the Dells and into southwestern Wisconsin. The half-mile featured a lot of speed and the races were always great. I always enjoyed it...it was and always will be a challenging track."

In the same interview he was asked about his accomplishments and whether or not another driver could do the same, Trickle said, "All records are made to be broke and I'm happy to hold a few of them. It's unlikely that someone will win over 1,200 races but that could happen too. The rules when I raced the short tracks were consistent. Back in my day, the good old days, you take the same car and run everywhere. I could take one car and do it all if I wanted. I ran 118 shows with just one car having to make only a few changes. Now there might be three of four different engine rules and they're harder to police." He went on to add, "To race five or six nights a week today you just don't have time to tear your motor apart before going to the next track. It seems promoters all want to set their own rules and all run on Friday or Saturday nights."

My favorite comment Trickle made about Madison was a simple one-liner: "I won my share...maybe more than my share."

The Super Late Model Triple Crown Challenge is a four event series with races also scheduled for Sunday, July 14, Sunday, July 28, and Sunday, September 8. The Midwest Trucks and INEX Legends will also be on the racing schedule for each of the Triple Crown events.

"Dick Trickle meant a lot to so many people who followed racing in this part of the country. Just about anyone who watched him race or met him has a special story to tell. We want to take some time to remember all that he did for racing," concluded Tyler.

Captures Joe Shear Classic And Guitar That Goes With It

by Gregg Paul

The ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment and Lester Buildings "5th Annual Joe Shear Classic is officially in the books.

Travis Sauter doesn't believe in luck, yet he somehow managed to hold off Jacob Goede to capture his seventh straight feature win at the Madison International Speedway. Sauter was able to get around Goede with coming to the white flag lap and narrowly held on for the victory. The win was Sauter's second straight Midwest Tour win as well.

Sauter and his uncle Johnny, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver seemingly had the field covered from just prior to the break at lap 64. The duo pulled away from the field on restarts until a yellow with just 23 laps to go. Dan Fredrickson had worked his way into the top three and pulled to the inside on the restart to get by both Travis and Johnny.

A spin two laps after that restart by Joel Thiesen set the stage for the late race drama. Johnny Sauter spun his tires on the restart and allowed Fredrickson to get away. Sauter would fight back on the inside and pulled back alongside Fredrickson. Sauter than appeared to hook the apron coming off of turn four, giving Fredrickson the advantage. Sauter kept his foot in the gas and made contact with Fredrickson that sent Sauter spinning down the front straightaway.

Jacob Goede utilized the cone to get to the outside of the front row on the restart. Goede would get the jump and pull ahead of Fredrickson coming off of turn two. Goede would pull away by a few car lengths, as Travis Sauter lurked behind.

Sauter would get by Fredrickson coming off of turn two with just twelve laps remaining. Sauter methodically began to reel in Goede, pulling closer and closer as the laps wound down. With just four laps to go, Sauter latched onto the rear bumper of Goede, setting the stage for an awesome finish.

Sauter would use the chrome horn at both ends of the track, only to see Goede hold onto the lead. Sauter would get a nose inside before Goede would slam the door on him. Coming to the White Flag, Sauter got underneath Goede as the came off of turn four. Sauter would clear Goede down the straightaway and ran the final lap with Goede just barely on his rear bumper. However, Goede could never mount that last ditched effort, as Sauter notched yet another victory at MIS.

"Johnny was the guy to beat in the second half," said Sauter. "He had them covered, then I was loose after the break. Once he went out I still thought I had the best car. Restarting in the second row, Danny's hard to pass and I got by him just in time, with like 8 to go. That was the perfect amount of time to catch Jacob."

Sauter picked up the signature Guitar Trophy emblematic of the win in the Joe Shear Classic, something he was happy to avenge from last year's bitter defeat.

by John Wells

Jerry Wood and Aaron Moyer came away with wins in their respective divisions on opening day at Madison International Speedway as part of the Joe Shear Classic. Wood won the 30 lap feature for the SCAG Power Equipment Midwest Trucks while Moyer was victorious in the 20 lap INEX Legends feature.

Jerry Wood Captures the Midwest Truck Checkered Flag

Jerry Wood won the 30 lap feature for the Scag Power Equipment Midwest Trucks.

Rookie Joshua James led the field of ten Midwest Trucks to the green flag in their 30 lap feature. Dann Barber took the lead before one lap was completed before the caution flag came out on lap 2 for a spin in turn four. Barber continued to lead after the restart with Jerry Wood just a truck length behind. On lap 4 Wood pulled to the inside of Barber coming down the front shoot and the two raced side by side. Meanwhile as the two leaders raced side by side Chad Knaus and Natalie Decker were running side by side for third.

On lap 12 Jerry Wood finally gained an advantage over Barber to take the lead. Wood picked up a couple of lengths on Barber before a spin brought out the caution on lap 16.

Wood and Barber lined up in the front row for the restart with Wood getting the lead back. Decker moved to the inside of Barber to take second on lap 19 while Wood built up a comfortable seven truck length lead. Knaus took third from Barber on lap 20 while John Wood got to the inside of Barber for fourth on lap 21.

The field began to stretch out with Wood taking a ten car length lead over Decker. There wasn’t going to be enough time for Decker as Wood picked up the easy win. Knaus finished third followed by John Wood and Barber.

Even though it may have looked easy from the stands, the winner had a little different take of things. “This gets harder every year,” said the veteran Wood from victory lane.

In the first eight lap heat for the Midwest Trucks Chad Knaus took the lead after one lap while John and Jerry Wood battled it out for second. Natalie Decker took the third spot from Jerry Wood on lap 3 while Knaus was building a three truck length lead over John Wood. Knaus maintained his lead the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Scott Kingswan and Jacob Van Wazer brought the field of five trucks to the green flag for the second heat. Kingswan grabbed the lead from the start and did everything he could to hold off Dann Barber who desperately tried to get by on the inside. The inside didn’t do the trick so Barber tried the outside and took the lead with two laps to go when he got by Kingswan coming out of lap 4 with two laps to go. It was all Barber from that point as he easily picked up the checkered flag.

Jason Schuler was fast qualifier with a lap of 18.530 followed by John Wood at 18.664, Natalie Decker 18.719, Chad Knaus 18.761, and Jerry Wood 18.927.

Moyer Picks Up Where He Left Off Last Season

Aaron Moyer won the 20 lap feature for the INEX Legends and made it two in a row after winning last season’s Fall Classic.

Brian Griffin and Matt O’Leary brought the field to the green flag. Griffin got loose coming out of turn four giving a sizeable lead to O’Leary. Chris Lishamer moved up to second followed by Kevin Griffin. Vince Bartolotta and Aaron Moyer put heavy pressure on Kevin Griffin for third with Bartolotta taking the spot on lap 7.

Defending champion Andy Jones moved up to fifth on lap 8. On lap 9 Bartolotta moved to the inside of Lishamer for second with Moyer quickly up third. Bartolotta took the lead on lap 11 before relinquishing the lead to Moyer on lap 12.

One lap later Jones powered by Bartolotta for second. He began to hunt down the leader, but Moyer was too fast and the second generation driver from Malone, Wisconsin, picked up the checkered flag. Bartolotta finished in third place followed by Cory Talaska and Kevin Griffin.

“This was fun. I love racing here,” said Moyer from victory lane.

Despite having trouble in practice, Aaron Moyer had it figured out by the time he ran the first eight lap heat race as he easily outdistanced the field. Moyer took the lead from the second row on the first lap and built up a huge lead before a caution came out on lap 6 for a spin. It was no problem for Moyer who picked up where he left off on the restart to pick up the win. Tim Narr finished second followed by Brian Griffin.

Kevin Griffin jumped out to the early lead in the second eight lap Legends heat with Matt O’Leary in hot pursuit. Vince Bartolotta took second place from O’Leary on lap 5 and began to chase down the leader. But Griffin was too strong for the field as he was able to hold off his fellow competitors to win the race.

Andy Jones was the fastest of the Legends in qualifying with a lap of 13.922 followed by Vince Bartolotta 14.046, Cory Talaska 14.121, Chris Lishamer 14.137, and Kevin Griffin 14.175.
